Abstract

A fluid end section having a clamping system. The clamping system has a primary clamp formed of a number of sections, which, disposed in end-to-end arrangement, form an annular ring. The primary clamp has an angled surface at each of two rims, which interact with complementary surfaces on flanges that form two separate components of the fluid end section. Each of the two separate components have a bore, which when aligned by placement of the clamp, are in alignment with one another. The clamp has an externally-disposed compression ring, which may either be essentially the width of the primary clamp, or may have one or more flexible rods which interact with grooves on the primary clamp. In either case, the compression ring holds the primary clamp in place, therefore joining the components of the fluid end.

Claims (69)

1. A fluid end section, comprising:

a housing having a first longitudinal bore formed therethrough;

a stuffing box having a second longitudinal bore formed therethrough; and

a clamp surrounding at least a portion of the housing and at least a portion of the stuffing box, such that the first longitudinal bore and the second longitudinal bore are aligned and the housing abuts the stuffing box, in which the clamp comprises:

a central section having an inner surface;

a first rim extending from the central section, in which the first rim has a first angled surface extending from the inner surface; and

a second rim extending from the central section, in which the second rim has a second angled surface extending from the inner surface.

2. The fluid end section of claim 1 , in which the clamp further comprises:

a plurality of clamp sections surrounded by an outer compression ring.

3. The fluid end section of claim 1 , in which:

the housing comprises a first flange disposed about the first longitudinal bore, the first flange comprising:

an outermost surface, at which the first longitudinal bore opens; and

a first flange angled surface, disposed opposite the outermost surface and disposed at an angle complementary to the first angled surface of the first rim.

4. The fluid end section of claim 3 , in which:

the stuffing box comprises a second flange disposed about the second longitudinal bore, the second flange comprising:

a front surface, at which the second longitudinal bore opens; and

a second flange angled surface, disposed opposite the front surface and disposed at an angle complementary to the second angled surface of the second rim.

5. The fluid end section of claim 1 , in which the clamp comprises a plurality of clamp sections, in which the plurality of clamp sections form an annular ring when arranged end-to-end.

6. The fluid end section of claim 5 further comprising:

an outer compression ring disposed about the plurality of clamp sections.

7. The fluid end section of claim 1 further comprising:

an outer compression ring disposed about the clamp.

8. The fluid end section of claim 7 in which the outer compression ring comprises:

at least one ring rod extending from an expanded end to a threaded end; and

wherein the clamp defines:

a first passage, having a smaller inner diameter than an outer diameter of the expanded end;

a circumferential groove; and

a second passage configured to secure the threaded end of the at least one ring rod;

wherein the at least one ring rod is partially disposed within the circumferential groove.

9. The fluid end section of claim 8 further comprising at least one ring rod clamp, wherein the ring rod clamp is attachable to the clamp such that the ring rod clamp is configured to retain the ring rod within the circumferential groove.

10. The fluid end section of claim 9 in which the clamp comprises at least one first clamp section and a plurality of second clamp sections, wherein:

the circumferential groove is formed in the plurality of second clamp sections; and

the first passage and the second passage are formed in the at least one first clamp section.

11. A method of installing the clamp in the fluid end section of claim 10 , comprising:

aligning the first longitudinal bore with the second longitudinal bore, such that the housing abuts the stuffing box;

placing a plurality of second clamp sections about the first flange and the second flange, such that the first flange angled surface abuts the first angled surface of the first rim and the second flange angled surface abuts the second angled surface of the second rim;

placing the first clamp section about the first flange and the second flange;

placing the ring rod into the first passage;

placing the ring rod in the circumferential groove of the plurality of second clamp sections; and

securing the threaded end of the ring rod in the second passage.

12. The fluid end section of claim 7 in which the outer compression ring comprises:

a circumferential section;

a first tab, disposed at a first end of the circumferential section; and

a second tab, disposed at a second end of the circumferential section;

wherein the first tab and the second tab are connectable by at least one fastener.

13. A method of installing the clamp in the fluid end section of claim 12 , comprising:

aligning the first longitudinal bore with the second longitudinal bore, such that the housing abuts the stuffing box;

placing the clamp, the first flange and the second flange, such that the first flange angled surface abuts the first angled surface of the first rim and the second flange angled surface abuts the second angled surface of the second rim;

placing the outer compression ring about the clamp such that the first tab is proximate the second tab; and

connecting the first tab to the second tab with a connector.

14. The method of claim 13 in which the clamp comprises a plurality of clamp sections, wherein the plurality of clamp sections form an annular ring when arranged in end-to-end orientation.

15. The fluid end section of claim 1 in which the first longitudinal bore and the second longitudinal bore are horizontal.

16. A fluid end, comprising:

at least three fluid end sections, in which each of the fluid end sections is the fluid end section of claim 1 .

17. The fluid end section of claim 1 further comprising a plunger, wherein the plunger is at least partially disposed within the second longitudinal bore.

18. A kit, comprising:

a first component of a fluid end section having a first bore formed therethrough, wherein the first bore terminates at a first flange of the first component;

a second component of a fluid end section having a second bore formed therethrough, wherein the second bore terminates at a second flange of the first component; and

a clamping apparatus comprising:

a primary clamp having a first annular rim and a second annular rim, wherein the first annular rim is complementary to the first flange and the second annular rim is complementary to the second flange; and

a compression ring, configured for placement about a periphery of the primary clamp;

wherein the first bore and second bore are aligned to form a continuous bore when the primary clamp is about the first flange and the second flange.

19. The kit of claim 18 wherein the primary clamp is formed of a plurality of sections, wherein the plurality of sections, placed end-to-end, form an annular ring.

20. The kit of claim 18 wherein the second component comprises a stuffing box.

21. The kit of claim 18 wherein the compression ring comprises a plurality of flexible rods.

22. The kit of claim 18 wherein the compression ring comprises a thin-walled cylindrical body disposed about a length of the periphery of the primary clamp.
