Abstract

A computer-implemented method of using telematics data at a destination device is provided. The destination device may be a mobile device associated with a driver, or a smart vehicle controller of a destination vehicle. The telematics data is generated by an originating mobile device (i) having a Telematics Application (or “App”), and (ii) associated with a second driver/vehicle, the telematics data including acceleration, braking, speed, heading, and location data associated with an originating vehicle. The telematics data may be broadcast from the originating mobile device to the destination device that (a) analyzes the telematics data received, (b) determines that an abnormal travel condition exists, and (c) automatically take corrective action that alleviates a negative impact of the abnormal travel condition on the destination vehicle to facilitate safer travel. A usage-based or other insurance discount may be provided based upon insured usage of the telematics data-based risk mitigation or prevention functionality.

Claims (41)

1. A computer-implemented method of using telematics data at a computing device carried by a first vehicle, comprising:

receiving, by the computing device, telematics data associated with operation of a second vehicle;

identifying, by the computing device and based upon the telematics data, a location of a particular traffic event;

determining, by the computing device, that the first vehicle is traveling to a destination along a first route, and that the first route includes the location; and

based on determining that the first vehicle is traveling along the first route, and that the first route includes the location:

determining, by the computing device, a second route extending from proximate a current location of the first vehicle to the destination, wherein the second route avoids the location,

generating, by the computing device, an executable instruction associated with the second route, and

providing, by the computing device, the executable instruction to a processor of the first vehicle, the executable instruction causing the processor of the first vehicle to control the first vehicle to travel along the second route.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the telematics data indicates that the second vehicle is experiencing one or more of: high traffic conditions, road congestion, road construction, and extreme weather conditions.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the telematics data is indicative of one or more of: Global Positioning System (GPS) location, speed, lane information associated with the second vehicle, time, turning associated with the second vehicle, battery level associated with the second vehicle, or telephone usage information associated the second vehicle.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing, by the computing device and on a display associated with the first vehicle, a graphical user interface (GUI) including a text or graphical indication of:

the particular traffic event, a location of the particular traffic event on a map, and the second route.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is a first computing device, and the telematics data is received from a second computing device associated with the second vehicle via peer-to-peer (P2P) wireless communications.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the telematics data is received from a remote server via a communication network.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

enabling, by the computing device, a reception of telematics data;

displaying, by the computing device, pricing adjustment information associated with a driver of the first vehicle, wherein the pricing adjustment information is based upon an amount of time the reception of telematics data is enabled.

8. A computing device carried by a first vehicle, the computing device comprising a processor, and a communication unit including at least one transceiver, the processor being configured to perform operations using telematics data, comprising:

receiving, via the communication unit, telematics data associated with operation of a second vehicle; identifying, based upon the telematics data, a location of a particular traffic event;

determining that the first vehicle is traveling to a destination along a first route, and that the first route includes the location; and

based on determining that the first vehicle is traveling along the first route, and that the first route includes the location: determining a second route extending from proximate a current location of the first vehicle to the destination, wherein the second route avoids the location, generating an executable instruction associated with the second route, and providing the executable instruction to a processor of the first vehicle, the executable instruction causing the processor of the first vehicle to control the first vehicle to travel along the second route.

9. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the telematics data indicates that the second vehicle is experiencing one or more of: high traffic conditions, road congestion, road construction, and extreme weather conditions.

The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to: provide, on a display associated with the first vehicle, a graphical user interface (GUI) including a text or graphical indication of: the particular traffic event, a location of the particular traffic event on a map, and the second route.

11. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the telematics data is received from an additional computing device carried by the second vehicle via peer-to-peer (P2P) wireless communications.

12. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the telematics data is received from an additional computing device carried by the second vehicle, via a remote server.

13. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

display pricing adjustment information associated with a driver of the first vehicle, wherein the pricing adjustment information is based upon a number of miles driven by the first vehicle while reception of telematics data is enabled.

14. A tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium associated with a first computing device carried by a first vehicle, the computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor of the first computing device, cause the first computing device to:

receive telematics data from a second computing device associated with a second vehicle, the telematics data associated with operation of the second vehicle;

identify, based upon the telematics data, a location of a particular traffic event;

determine that the first vehicle is traveling to a destination along a first route, and that the first route includes the location; and

based on determining that the first vehicle is traveling along the first route, and that the first route includes the location: determine a second route extending from proximate a current location of the first vehicle to the destination, wherein the second route avoids the location, generate an executable instruction associated with the second route, and provide the executable instruction to a processor of the first vehicle, the executable instruction causing the processor of the first vehicle to control the first vehicle the first vehicle to travel along the second route.

15. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the telematics data indicates that the second vehicle is experiencing one or more of: high traffic conditions, road congestion, road construction, and extreme weather conditions.

The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the telematics data is indicative of one or more of: Global Positioning System (GPS) location, speed, lane information associated with the second vehicle, time, turning associated with the second vehicle, battery level associated with the second vehicle, or telephone usage information associated the second vehicle.

17. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the first computing device to:

provide, on a display associated with the first vehicle, a graphical user interface (GUI) including a text or graphical indication of:

the particular traffic event, a location of the particular traffic event on a map, and the second route.

18. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the telematics data is received from the second computing device via one of: peer-to-peer (P2P) wireless communications or a remote server connected with the first computing device via a communication network.

19. The tangible, non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the instructions further cause the first computing device to:

display pricing adjustment information associated with a driver of the first vehicle, wherein the pricing adjustment information is based upon a driver risk caused by the particular traffic event.
