Abstract

An airborne or liquid particle sensor with a number of advanced features is disclosed. The sensor includes an output channel generating an electrical signal for a particle passing through the sensor, where the electrical signal includes information related to the pulse. The information is processed by the sensor to determine a value that indicates a more accurate particle mass for a sample period than the average mass.

Claims (28)

1. A graphical user interface for a particle counting system comprising:

a light detecting particle sensor device in communication with a memory, the light detecting particle sensor device being configured to detect airborne particles in an airflow, and further including a plurality of electrical output channels that count different sizes of airborne particles in different output channels, the light detecting particle sensor device generating an electrical signal for each particle counted of a plurality of particles passing through the light detecting particle sensor device, wherein each electrical signal includes at least a pulse having a peak pulse height; and

a signal processing circuit connected to the light detecting particle sensor device and the memory, the signal processing circuit generating digitized pulse height data wherein the digitized pulse height data exceeds a threshold for each output channel, such that each threshold has a respective minimum peak pulse height threshold, wherein the memory receives the peak digitized pulse height data for data storage;

wherein the particle counting system comprises a display, a battery and a power controller that controls power during sampling periods and is configured to select a low power mode of operation of the particle counting system; and

a data processor programmed to operate a graphical user interface, the graphical user interface graphically displaying particle count data as a function of time on the display during a sampling period.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least an arrival time, a peak pulse width and the peak pulse height of each pulse is logged.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the graphical user interface generates a graph of particles counted per second for the sampling period for each channel or wherein the graphical user interface generates a multichannel histogram to display relative counts in a first output channel and a second output channel.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display graphically displays particles counted over time for at least a first output channel and a second output channel of the plurality of output channels or wherein logged pulse data is later retrieved for graphical display.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal processing circuit further comprises an analog to digital converter and wherein the data processor is configured to compute a particle mass for each channel.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a controller connected to the signal processing circuit that includes a field programmable gate array (FPGA) that manages a counter for each output channel in parallel, and wherein the controller is connected to the memory, the controller configured to set a threshold for each channel.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the display graphically depicts particle count data for each output channel.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system comprises a link to a network including a plurality of light detecting particle sensor devices that are connected to a data storage device with the network.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the light detecting particle sensor device comprises a photodetector that detects particles passing through a light beam generated by a laser and further comprising a pump or fan providing an airflow through the light detecting particle sensor device and comprising a pulse log buffer that stores a pulse height, a pulse width, an arrival time and increments a counter.

10. The system of clam 1 , wherein the memory is configured to store a particle area for each detected particle above the respective minimum peak pulse height threshold and the light detecting particle sensor device comprises a light detector that is connected to an amplifier, a comparator and a peak detector.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the signal processing circuit is connected to a controller to control a plurality of at least three particle counting channels, each channel having a threshold configured by the controller and being latched at time intervals simultaneously.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the data processor generates a first alarm signal for the light detecting particle sensor device that detects particles at a first location and a second alarm signal for a second light detecting particle device that detects particles at a second location, the first alarm signal being generated at an alarm condition and the second alarm signal generated at a different further alarm condition.

14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an environmental sensor that generates sensor data received by the data processor, the data processor generating an alarm signal base upon detected sensor data and the particle count data.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the data processor performs a Fourier transform of the particle count data for display of frequency dependent information on the display.
