Abstract

A track assembly for a patient transport apparatus, comprising a rail defining a first end and a second end, an axle defining an axis, a roller supported about the axis, and a belt engaging roller and arranged for movement relative to the rail in response to rotation of the roller. A guide supports the axle for movement. A keeper coupled to the axle is operable between a disengaged configuration to permit movement of the axle, and an engaged configuration to restrict movement. A brace is operatively attached to the rail adjacent to the guide. A tensioning cam coupled to the axle defines a plurality of relief catches arranged for engagement with the brace. The relief catches are each shaped to remain in selective engagement with the brace effected by concurrent movement of the axle and the tensioning cam to tension the belt against the roller in the disengaged configuration.

Claims (24)

1. A method for tensioning a track assembly of a patient transport apparatus configured to transport a patient along stairs, wherein the track assembly includes a rail, an axle defining a roller axis, first and second rollers spaced from each other along the roller axis, a belt disposed in engagement with the first and second rollers and arranged for movement relative to the rail, a keeper coupled to the axle, a brace operatively attached to the rail adjacent to a first end of the rail, and a cam coupled to the axle and defining a plurality of relief catches arranged for engagement with the brace, the method comprising:

placing the keeper in a disengaged configuration to release tension in the belt;

applying rotational force to the axle to move the cam from a first axle position where a first relief catch contacts the brace to a second axle position where a second relief catch contacts the brace to tighten the belt; and

placing the keeper in an engaged configuration to apply a force against the axle and the rail to maintain the cam positioned with the second relief catch contacting the brace with the belt tightened against the first and second rollers.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising pivoting the first end of a rail of the track assembly away from a support structure of the patient transport apparatus.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein placing the keeper in a disengaged configuration to release tension in the belt further includes moving the cam away from the first end of the rail.

4. The method as set forth in claim 3 , wherein a guide defining a slot supports the axle for movement relative to the rail while the keeper operates in the disengaged configuration; and

wherein moving the cam away from the first end of the rail includes moving the axle along the slot of the guide towards a second end of the rail.

5. The method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein placing the keeper in the disengaged configuration to release tension in the belt includes rotating the keeper about the roller axis.

6. The method as set forth in claim 5 , wherein the keeper is disposed in threaded engagement with the axle.

7. The method as set forth in claim 6 , wherein rotating the keeper about the roller axis includes rotating the keeper relative to the axle to loosen the threaded engagement.

8. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein applying rotational force to the axle to move the cam includes rotating the cam about the roller axis.

9. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the cam comprises a base portion arranged about the roller axis, and a follower portion arranged about a follower axis and at least partially defining the plurality of relief catches; and

wherein rotating the cam about the roller axis moves the follower portion relative to the first end of the rail.

10. The method as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the follower axis is offset from the roller axis.

11. The method as set forth in claim 10 , wherein the follower axis is substantially parallel to the roller axis.

12. The method as set forth in claim 9 , wherein the plurality of relief catches are radially-spaced along the follower portion.

13. The method as set forth in claim 12 , wherein the plurality of relief catches are spaced equidistant from each other.

The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein applying rotational force to the axle to move the cam from the first axle position to the second axle position includes moving the axle and the cam concurrently towards the first end of the rail as the brace comes out of engagement with the first relief catch and comes into engagement with the second relief catch.

15. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of relief catches each have a substantially arc-shaped profile.

16. The method as set forth in claim 1 , further including a spacer operatively attached to the axle and supporting the first and second rollers for rotation about the roller axis.

17. The method as set forth in claim 16 , wherein the cam is keyed to the axle such that the cam and the axle rotate concurrently about the roller axis in response to applied rotational force; and

wherein applying rotational force to the axle to move the cam from the first axle position to the second axle position includes concurrently rotating the axle and the cam.

18. The method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein one of the axle and the cam defines a key feature, and the other of the axle and the cam defines a keyway feature with a profile that is complimentary to the key feature.
