Abstract

An aerosol-generating system includes a cartridge and an aerosol-generating device configured to receive the cartridge. The cartridge includes a cartridge housing and a cartridge aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge housing. The cartridge housing has a first end, a second end, a first side between the first end and the second end, and at least one aperture on the first side. The aerosol-generating device includes a device housing, a liquid aerosol-forming substrate, an electric heater, a power supply, and a controller. The device housing defines a cavity, a cavity air inlet, and a cavity air outlet. The cavity is configured to receive the cartridge such that an airflow from the cavity air inlet to the cavity outlet flows through the cartridge via the at least one aperture during an operation of the aerosol-generating system.

Claims (57)

1. A cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate comprising:

a cartridge housing including,

a first sidewall,

a second sidewall, a length of the cartridge housing extending between the first sidewall and the second sidewall and defining a longest dimension of the cartridge housing,

a first side extending the length of the cartridge housing, the first side defining a first aperture;

a second side extending the length of the cartridge housing, the first side and the second side being opposite each other, and the first side and the second side connecting the first sidewall and the second sidewall, the second side defining

a wall portion covering the second side of the cartridge housing; and

an aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge housing,

the cartridge configured such that an airflow path through the aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge housing includes the first aperture.

2. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 1 , wherein the first aperture extends along substantially all of the first side.

3. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second aperture defined by the second side.

4. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 3 , further comprising:

a porous material covering the first aperture and the second aperture.

5. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 1 , wherein the first sidewall of the cartridge housing extends at a non-perpendicular angle with respect to the length of the cartridge housing, the cartridge being configured such that the first sidewall of the cartridge housing directs airflow to the first side of the cartridge housing.

6. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 1 , wherein the wall portion is curved.

7. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 3 , wherein the second aperture extends along less than half of the length of the second side.

8. The cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate of claim 1 , wherein the first aperture extends along less than half of the length of the first side.

9. A cartridge for containing aerosol-forming substrate comprising:

a cartridge housing including,

a first end,

a second end, a cartridge length extending between the first end and the second end and defining a longest dimension of the cartridge housing,

a first side,

a second side, the first side and the second side being opposite each other, and the first side and the second side being between the first end and the second end, and

a first aperture defined by the first side,

a dividing wall within the cartridge housing between the first end and the second end, so as to form at least two separate substrate compartments,

a filter in at least one of the at least two separate substrate compartments; and

an aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge housing, the cartridge configured such that an airflow path through the aerosol-forming substrate within the cartridge housing includes the first aperture.

10. An aerosol-generating system comprising:

a cartridge housing including,

a first end,

a second end, a cartridge length extending between the first end and the second end and defining a longest dimension of the cartridge housing,

a cavity configured to receive the cartridge,

a cavity air inlet at an upstream end of the cavity,

a cavity air outlet at a downstream end of the cavity, the cartridge positioned in the cavity such that an airflow from the cavity air inlet to the cavity air outlet passes through the cartridge via the first aperture, and

a first airflow blocking element, the first airflow blocking element configured to direct the airflow from the cavity air inlet through the first aperture.

11. The aerosol-generating system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a second airflow blocking element, the second airflow blocking element configured to direct the airflow from the cavity air inlet through a first portion of the first aperture and to direct the airflow to exit the cartridge through a second portion of the first aperture to the cavity air outlet.

12. The aerosol-generating system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a second aperture defined by the second side;

a dividing wall between the first end and the second end, so as to form at least two separate substrate compartments; and

a plurality of second airflow blocking elements, the plurality of second airflow blocking elements configured to direct the airflow from the cavity air inlet along a serpentine path sequentially through the at least two separate substrate compartments to the cavity air outlet,

the first aperture extending parallel to the cartridge length along substantially all of the first side.

13. The aerosol-generating system of claim 12 , wherein

the aerosol-forming substrate includes a first aerosol-forming substrate and a second aerosol-forming substrate within the at least two separate substrate compartments, the first aerosol-forming substrate and the second aerosol-forming substrate being different.
