Abstract

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a method that includes providing, by a processing system including a processor, a controller function for a user plane function (UPF) of a communication network; the controller function facilitates automated procedures for authentication, deployment, configuration, testing, and/or controlling availability of the UPF, independent of a source of the UPF. The method also includes providing, by the processing system, an interface to facilitate communication between the controller function and the UPF; the controller function uses the interface to facilitate the procedures. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (37)

1. A method comprising:

providing, by a processing system including a processor, a remote user plane function (UPF) deployment and controller function for a plurality of UPFs of a communication network, wherein respective UPFs of the plurality of UPFs comprises a respective proprietary configuration and control interfaces, each respective proprietary configuration and control interface being associated with a respective vendor, wherein the remote UPF deployment and control function communicates data for respective proprietary procedures for controlling the respective plurality of UPFs via the respective proprietary configuration and control interfaces; and

providing, by the processing system, a standard, service-based interface to facilitate communication between the remote UPF deployment and control function and the plurality of UPFs, wherein a first UPF and a second UPF of the plurality of UPFs are adapted to communicate with a session management function (SMF) via the standard, service-based interface and the remote UPF deployment and control function, and wherein the remote UPF deployment and control function facilitates communication between respective UPFs of the plurality of UPFs and the session management function via the standard, service-based interface.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the controlling comprises at least one of authentication, deployment, configuration, testing, and controlling availability of respective UPFs of the plurality of UPFs, independent of a vendor of the plurality of respective UPFs.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the remote UPF deployment and control function communicates data for the respective proprietary procedures for respective UPFs via the standard, service-based interface.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first UPF and the second UPF of the plurality are each associated with a different respective vendor, wherein the method further comprises:

communicating, by the processing system, with the SMF using different respective proprietary extensions to an N4 interface.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the communicating with the SMF using different respective proprietary extensions comprises:

receiving, by the processing system, an existing UPF configuration; and

changing, by the processing system, the existing UPF configuration to a new UPF configuration.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the standard, service-based interface is provided according to a 3 GPP service-based architecture (SBA), the method further comprising:

providing, by the processing system, notifications of the new UPF configuration.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

generating, by the processing system, a configuration for the respective UPFs, and wherein the controlling comprises, testing availability of respective UPFs, and wherein the testing comprises simulated testing and live network testing of a configuration of a UPF of the plurality of UPFs.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

adding, by the processing system, a user plane control function (UPCF) to the plurality of UPFs, wherein the UPCF is configured to receive and execute commands from the remote UPF deployment and control function.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the communication network comprises a 5G core network, and wherein the providing the standard, service-based interface comprises:

providing an N4 interface between a user plane and the plurality of UPFs.

deploying a particular UPF of the plurality of UPFs at an edge of the 5G core network, and wherein the remote UPF deployment and control function is discoverable by the plurality of UPFs via a network repository function.

11. A device, comprising:

a processing system including a processor; and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:

providing a remote user plane function (UPF) deployment and control function for a plurality of UPFs of a communication network, wherein respective UPFs of the plurality of UPFs utilize respective proprietary configuration and control interfaces, wherein the remote UPF deployment and control function to communicate data with the plurality of UPFs for respective proprietary procedures for controlling the respective plurality of UPFs via the proprietary configuration and control interfaces, wherein the controlling comprises at least one of authentication, deployment, configuration, testing, and controlling availability of the plurality of UPFs; and

providing a standard, service-based interface to facilitate communication between the remote UPF deployment and control function and the plurality of UPFs, wherein a first UPF and a second UPF of the plurality of UPFs are adapted to communicate with a session management function (SMF) via the standard, service-based interface and the remote UPF deployment and control function, and wherein the remote UPF deployment and control function facilitates communication between respective UPFs of the plurality of UPFs and the session management function via the standard, service-based interface.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein each respective proprietary configuration and control interface is associated with a respective vendor of the respective proprietary configuration and control interface.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the controlling comprises controlling the respective plurality of UPFs independent of a vendor of a respective UPF of the plurality of UPFs.
