Abstract

An example method of controlling a short circuit welding process includes: setting a heat target for at least a portion of a short state; monitoring output parameters during the short state; calculating a measured heat from the measured output parameters; comparing the measured heat and the heat target; adjusting a pinch current in a subsequent short state in response to at least one comparing from at least one previous short state; and repeating these actions.

Claims (27)

1. A method of controlling a short circuit welding process, comprising:

setting a heat target for at least a portion of a short state;

monitoring output parameters during the short state;

calculating a measured heat from the measured output parameters;

comparing the measured heat and the heat target;

adjusting, via a controller, a pinch current in a subsequent short state in response to at least one comparing from at least one previous short state; and

repeating these actions.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting the pinch current comprises increasing the pinch current when the measured heat is greater than the heating target.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the increasing the pinch current decreases a time in a clear phase following a pinch phase corresponding to the pinch current.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the adjusting the pinch current comprises decreasing the pinch current when the measured heat is less than the heating target.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the decreasing the pinch current increases a time in a clear phase following a pinch phase corresponding to the pinch current.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein setting the heat target comprises at least one of setting a preset heat target, a user set heat target, or a process set heat target.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein setting the heat target comprises adjusting the heat target in response to a past cycle.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring of the output parameters comprises monitoring at least one of an actual output current or an elapsed time.

9. A system for short circuit welding process, comprising:

a power circuit, disposed to receive a power signal and provide a welding output, and having a control input;

a feedback circuit, connected to the power circuit and having a feedback output responsive to at least output current and output voltage during the short state;

a controller, having control outputs connected to the control input, and having a feedback input connected to the feedback output, wherein the controller includes a short state module configured to provide a plurality of short state parameters, and an arc state module configured to provide a plurality of arc state parameters,

wherein the short state module includes a measured heat module configured to receive as an input the feedback output and configured to provide a measured heat output of at least a portion of the short state;

wherein the short state module includes a comparison module configured to compare a desired heat target and a function of the measured heat output; and

wherein the short state module is configured to provide the plurality of short state parameters of a subsequent short state, including adjusting a pinch current in the subsequent short state in response to the output of the comparison module from at least one past short state.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the short state module is configured to adjust the pinch current by increasing the pinch current when the measured heat is greater than the heating target.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the short state module is configured to decrease a time in a clear phase following a pinch phase corresponding to the pinch current by increasing the pinch current.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the short state module is configured to adjust the pinch current by decreasing the pinch current when the measured heat is less than the heating target.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the short state module is configured to increase a time in a clear phase following a pinch phase corresponding to the pinch current by decreasing the pinch current.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the short state module comprises a heat setting module configured to set the heat target by at least one of setting a preset heat target, a user set heat target, or a process set heat target.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the short state module comprises a heat setting module configured to set the heat target by adjusting the heat target in response to a past cycle.
