Abstract

A method and apparatus for controlling desktop virtualization function, per-display device window layout provision function, and user input-based external display device utilization function are provided.

Claims (76)

1. A mobile terminal comprising:

a communication interface;

a touchscreen display;

a processor; and

memory storing at least one program including first computer-executable program commands that, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile terminal to:

detect that the mobile terminal is communicatively connected to an electronic device via the communication interface,

based on detecting that the mobile terminal is communicatively connected to the electronic device via the communication interface, switch from operating in a single display mode to operating in a dual display mode, in the single display mode the touchscreen display is used for display of a mobile window environment, and in the dual display mode the touchscreen display is used to display the mobile window environment and the electronic device is used to remotely display a desktop window environment,

transmit a first message to the electronic device via the communication interface,

after the first message is transmitted to the electronic device, receive a second message from the electronic device via the communication interface, the second message being related to use of the electronic device by the mobile terminal as a display,

based on switching from operating in the single display mode to operating in the dual display mode and based on the second message received from the electronic device via the communication interface, transmit, to the electronic device via the communication interface, a first desktop window screen of the desktop window environment to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device,

the first desktop window screen including a plurality of icons corresponding to a plurality of applications executable in the desktop window environment,

display a virtual touchpad application execution screen of a virtual touchpad application, executed in the mobile window environment, in a first screen region of the touchscreen display, the virtual touchpad application execution screen presenting a virtual touchpad to manipulate a pointer on the first desktop window screen while the first desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device,

receive a first user input on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the first desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device,

based on the first user input being received on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the first desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identify the first user input as being a manipulation of the pointer on the first desktop window screen that selects an icon among the plurality of icons included in the first desktop window screen,

execute a first application that corresponds to the selected icon, and

transmit, to the electronic device via the communication interface, a second desktop window screen of the desktop window environment to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device, the second desktop window screen including a first application execution screen, of the first application that corresponds to the selected icon, as formatted in a first layout according to a first window layout policy that is for the desktop window environment,

receive a second user input on a second screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

based on the second user input being received on the second screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identify the second user input as not being a basis for an input to the second desktop window screen, and

perform a function of the mobile window environment based on the second user input, which was identified as not being the basis for the input to the second desktop window screen,

while transmitting, to the electronic device via the communication interface, the second desktop window screen to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

receive a third user input on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device, and

based on the third user input being received on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identify the third user input as being a screen move manipulation that moves the first application execution screen included in the second desktop window screen so that a part of the first application execution screen moves from the second desktop window screen to the mobile window environment and a remaining part of the first application execution screen continues to be included in the second desktop window screen, and

display the part of the first application execution screen in the second screen region of the touchscreen display as formatted in a second layout according to a second window layout policy that is for the mobile window environment, while the remaining part of the first application execution screen continues to be included in the second desktop window screen as formatted in the first layout, the first layout being different than the second layout.

2. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the manipulation of the pointer includes movement of the pointer.

3. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the at least one program further includes second computer-executable program commands that, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile terminal to:

receive a fourth user input on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device, and

based on the fourth user input being received on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identify the fourth user input as being a close screen manipulation to close the first application execution screen, and

present a closing of the first application execution screen in the second desktop window screen.

4. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the at least one program further includes second computer-executable program commands that, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile terminal to:

execute a second application that is related to the virtual touchpad application based on receiving a request to execute the second application that is related to the virtual touchpad application.

5. The mobile terminal of claim 4 , wherein the at least one program further includes third computer-executable program commands that, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile terminal to:

execute the second application that is related to the virtual touchpad application based on the transmitting, to the electronic device, via the communication interface, of the first desktop window screen to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device.

6. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the virtual touchpad application is configured to identify includes at least one of a gesture to move the pointer, an icon selection gesture, a single touch gesture, or a multi-touch gesture.

7. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein one or more icons respectively corresponding to one or more applications that are not executable in the desktop window environment is excluded from the first desktop window screen.

8. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the virtual touchpad application is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display based on operating in the dual display mode.

9. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the first desktop window screen and the second desktop window screen are configured to display on a display of the electronic device that is larger than the touchscreen display.

10. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the communication interface comprises at least one of a universal serial bus (USB) interface to communicatively connect with the electronic device via wire or a Wi-Fi interface to communicatively connect with the electronic device wirelessly.

11. The mobile terminal of claim 1 , wherein the communication interface comprises a Bluetooth interface to communicatively connect with at least one of a Bluetooth keyboard or a Bluetooth mouse to use with the first desktop window screen and the second desktop window screen.

12. A method performed by a mobile terminal, the method comprising:

detecting that the mobile terminal is communicatively connected to an electronic device via a communication interface of the mobile terminal;

based on detecting that the mobile terminal is communicatively connected to the electronic device via the communication interface, switching from operating in a single display mode to operating in a dual display mode, in the single display mode a touchscreen display of the mobile terminal is used for display of a mobile window environment, and in the dual display mode the touchscreen display is used to display the mobile window environment and the electronic device is used to remotely display a desktop window environment;

transmitting a first message to the electronic device via the communication interface;

after the first message is transmitted to the electronic device, receiving a second message from the electronic device via the communication interface, the second message being related to use of the electronic device by the mobile terminal as a display;

based on switching from operating in the single display mode to operating in the dual display mode and based on the second message received from the electronic device via the communication interface, transmitting, to the electronic device via the communication interface, a first desktop window screen of the desktop window environment to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device, the first desktop window screen including a plurality of icons corresponding to a plurality of applications executable in the desktop window environment;

displaying a virtual touchpad application execution screen of a virtual touchpad application, executed in the mobile window environment, in a first screen region of the touchscreen display, the virtual touchpad application execution screen presenting a virtual touchpad to manipulate a pointer on the first desktop window screen while the first desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device;

receiving a first user input on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the first desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device;

based on the first user input received on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the first desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identifying the first user input as being a manipulation of the pointer on the first desktop window screen that selects an icon among the plurality of icons included in the first desktop window screen,

executing a first application that corresponds to the selected icon, and

transmitting, to the electronic device via the communication interface, a second desktop window screen of the desktop window environment to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device, the second desktop window screen including a first application execution screen, of the first application that corresponds to the selected icon, as formatted in a first layout according to a first window layout policy that is for the desktop window environment;

receiving a second user input on a second screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device;

based on the second user input being received on the second screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identifying the second user input as not being a basis for an input to the second desktop window screen, and

performing a function of the mobile window environment based on the second user input, which was identified as not being the basis for the input to the second desktop window screen, while transmitting, to the electronic device via the communication interface, the second desktop window screen to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device;

receiving a third user input on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device; and

based on the third user input being received on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identifying the third user input as being a screen move manipulation that moves the first application execution screen included in the second desktop window screen so that a part of the first application execution screen moves from the second desktop window screen to the mobile window environment and a remaining part of the first application execution screen continues to be included in the second desktop window screen, and

displaying the part of the first application execution screen in the second screen region of the touchscreen display as formatted in a second layout according to a second window layout policy that is for the mobile window environment, while the remaining part of the first application execution screen continues to be included in the second desktop window screen as formatted in the first layout, the first layout being different than the second layout.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the manipulation of the pointer includes movement of the pointer.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

receiving a fourth user input on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device; and

based on the fourth user input being received on the first screen region of the touchscreen display, while the virtual touchpad application execution screen is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display and while the second desktop window screen is transmitted, to the electronic device via the communication interface, to display the second desktop window screen on the electronic device,

identifying the fourth user input as being a close screen manipulation to close the first application execution screen, and

presenting a closing of the first application execution screen in the second desktop window screen.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising: executing a second application that is related to the virtual touchpad application based on receiving a request to execute the second application that is related to the virtual touchpad application.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising: executing the second application that is related to the virtual touchpad application based on the transmitting, to the electronic device via the communication interface, of the first desktop window screen to display the first desktop window screen on the electronic device.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the virtual touchpad application is configured to identify at least one of a gesture to move the pointer, an icon selection gesture, a single touch gesture, or a multi-touch gesture.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein one or more icons respectively corresponding to one or more applications that are not executable in the desktop window environment is excluded from the first desktop window screen.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the virtual touchpad application is displayed in the first screen region of the touchscreen display based on operating in the dual display mode.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first desktop window screen and the second desktop window screen are configured to display on a display of the electronic device that is larger than the touchscreen display.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein the communication interface comprises at least one of a universal serial bus (USB) interface to communicatively connect with the electronic device via wire or a Wi-Fi interface to communicatively connect with the electronic device wirelessly.

22. The method of claim 12 , wherein the communication interface comprises a Bluetooth interface to communicatively connect with at least one of a Bluetooth keyboard or a Bluetooth mouse to use with the first desktop window screen and the second desktop window screen.
