Abstract

In a method of preventing fraudulent online financial transactions, a request to authorize an online, financial transaction may be received, where the transaction is associated with a debit or credit card account. A computing device at which information associated with the debit or credit card account was entered for the transaction may be identified, and a first geographic location at which the computing device resides may be determined. Based upon geolocation data indicating one or more geographic locations of the authorized cardholder, it may be determined that the authorized cardholder was at a second geographic location at a time of the transaction. If the second geographic location does not correspond to the first geographic location, the financial transaction may be prevented from being executed.

Claims (88)

1. A computer-implemented method of detecting fraudulent online transactions based on location data, the computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors, transaction data associated with an online transaction initiated by a user via a transaction device, wherein the transaction data includes a transaction time and a network address;

determining a device geographic location associated with the online transaction, based at least in part on the network address;

receiving, a plurality of device records from a separate computing device associated with the user and different from the transaction device, wherein each of the plurality of device records includes a time stamp and the separate computing device comprises at least one of:

a GPS device;

a vehicle telematics device;

a social media device;

a sensor system;

a smart appliance; or

a WiFi access point;

determining a user geographic location at a time associated with the transaction time, by comparing the transaction time to a plurality of time stamps associated with the plurality of device records from the separate computing device; and

authorizing the online transaction or flagging the online transaction as fraudulent, by comparing the device geographic location associated with the online transaction to the user geographic location at the time associated with the transaction time.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the user geographic location comprises:

determining a first device record from a plurality of device records received from the separate computing device, based on the first device record having a record time stamp nearest to the transaction time; and

comparing a difference between the record time stamp and the transaction time to a threshold time difference.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the device geographic location associated with the online transaction comprises:

retrieving the device geographic location from a geographic location datastore, using at least a portion of the network address as a key within the geographic location datastore.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

receiving the plurality of device records comprises receiving telematics data from a vehicle telematics device of a vehicle associated with the user; and

determining the user geographic location is based at least in part on the telematics data.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the telematics data comprises at least one of a GPS location of the vehicle or an indication that the user is at the vehicle.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

receiving the plurality of device records comprises receiving sensor data from a sensor system operating at a location associated with the user; and

determining the user geographic location comprises determining, based on the sensor data, that the user was at the location of the sensor system.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 6 , wherein the sensor system comprises a video surveillance system operating in at least one of a dwelling associated with the user or a place of employment associated with the user.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an indication of an item associated with the online transaction;

receiving an online search history associated with the user; and

based at least in part on the item being associated with the online search history, authorizing the online transaction.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 8 , wherein the receiving the indication of the item and the receiving the online search history are in response to determining that the user geographic location is greater than a threshold distance from the device location.

10. A system for detecting fraudulent online transactions based on location data comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving transaction data associated with an online transaction initiated by a user via a transaction device, wherein the transaction data includes a transaction time and an IP address;

determining a device geographic location associated with the online transaction, based at least in part on the IP address;

receiving a plurality of device records from a separate computing device associated with the user and different from the transaction device, wherein each of the plurality of device records includes time data and the separate computing device comprises at least one of:

a GPS device;

a vehicle telematics device;

a social media device;

a sensor system;

a smart appliance; or

a WiFi access point;

determining a user geographic location at a time associated with the transaction time, by comparing the transaction time to a plurality of time data associated with the plurality of device records from the separate computing device; and

authorizing the online transaction or flagging the online transaction as fraudulent, by comparing the device geographic location associated with the online transaction to the user geographic location at the time associated with the transaction time.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein determining the user geographic location comprises:

determining a first device record from a plurality of device records received from the separate computing device, based on the first device record having a record time nearest to the transaction time; and

comparing a difference between the record time and the transaction time to a threshold time difference.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

receiving the plurality of device records comprises receiving telematics data from a vehicle telematics device of a vehicle associated with the user; and

determining the user geographic location based at least in part on the telematics data.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

receiving the plurality of device records comprises receiving sensor data from a sensor system operating at a location associated with the user; and

determining the user geographic location comprises determining, based on the sensor data, that the user was at the location of the sensor system.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the user geographic location comprises:

determining GPS data within a first device record of the plurality of device records received from the separate computing device; and

determining that the user was interacting with the separate computing device at a time corresponding to the time stamp of the first device record.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the user geographic location comprises:

determining at least one of an identifier of a network access point or a signal strength associated with a first device record of the plurality of device records; and

determining a geographic location associated with the first device record, based on at least one of the identifier of the network access point or the signal strength.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the user geographic location comprises:

determining, based on a first device record received from the separate computing device, a fixed installation location of the separate computing device; and

determining that the user was interacting with the separate computing device at a time corresponding to the time stamp of the first device record.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of device records includes a first device record, the method further comprising:

receiving a second device record from a third computing device associated with the user and different from the transaction device and the separate computing device, wherein the third computing device comprises at least one of:

a GPS device;

a vehicle telematics device;

a social media device;

a sensor system;

a smart appliance; or

a WiFi access point;

determining a location of the third computing device based on the second device record; and

determining the user geographic location based on the location of the separate computing device, the location of the third computing device, the time stamp of the first device record, and a time stamp of the second device record.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 17 , further comprising:

receiving a second plurality of device records from the third computing device; and

comparing each of the plurality of device records and the second plurality of device records to the device geographic location associated with the online transaction.

19. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of device records includes a first device record, the operations further comprising:

receiving a second device record from a third computing device associated with the user and different from the transaction device and the separate computing device, wherein the third computing device comprises at least one of:

a GPS device;

a vehicle telematics device;

a social media device;

a sensor system;

a smart appliance; or

a WiFi access point;

determining a location of the third computing device based on the second device record; and

determining the user geographic location based on the location of the separate computing device, the location of the third computing device, the time data of the first device record, and a time stamp of the second device record.

20. The system of claim 19 , the operations further comprising:
