Abstract

Apparatuses, methods, and systems for providing a locking apparatus for resisting movement of an openable element are described. The locking apparatus includes a body, an actuator, a lifting member, at least a portion of the lifting member being configured to be raised or lowered relative to the body according to an output of the actuator, the lifting member comprising a contact surface configured to restrict movement of the openable element, and a strap coupled to the body and to the lifting member, the strap configured to permit the lifting member to flex based at least in part upon contact between the lifting member and the openable element and to transfer energy received at the lifting member into the body of the locking apparatus into a surface to which the locking apparatus is mounted.

Claims (45)

1. A locking apparatus for resisting movement of an openable element, the locking apparatus comprising:

a proximal side adjacent the openable element and a distal side opposite the proximal side;

a base;

an actuator mounted to the base;

a central member with a lifting member and a bottom portion, wherein at least a portion of the lifting member being configured to be raised or lowered relative to the base by the actuator, the lifting member comprising a contact surface configured to restrict movement of the openable element when the lifting member is raised;

an adjustment member comprising a flexible strap, with the flexible strap connected between the bottom portion of the central member and the lifting member; and

wherein the flexible strap is configured to permit the lifting member to flex based at least in part upon contact between the contact surface and the openable element, during the restricting of movement of the openable.

2. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap is passed through one or more apertures of the lifting member.

3. The locking apparatus of claim 2 , wherein:

the flexible strap is passed through a plurality of apertures of the lifting member about parallel to the proximal side of the locking apparatus.

4. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap is passed through one or more apertures of the bottom portion of the central member.

5. The locking apparatus of claim 4 , wherein:

the flexible strap is passed through a plurality of apertures of the bottom portion of the central member about parallel to the proximal side of the locking apparatus.

6. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap is passed through a plurality of apertures of the lifting member about parallel to the proximal side of the locking apparatus and the flexible strap is passed through a plurality of apertures of the bottom portion of the central member about parallel to the proximal side of the locking apparatus.

7. The locking apparatus of claim 6 , wherein:

the plurality of apertures of the lifting member are offset from the plurality of apertures of the bottom portion of the central member in a direction about parallel to the proximal side of the locking apparatus.

8. The locking apparatus of claim 7 , wherein:

the plurality of apertures of the lifting member are nearer to the proximal side of the locking apparatus than the plurality of apertures of the bottom portion of the central member.

9. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap further comprises one or more contact terminals for connecting to the lifting member.

10. The locking apparatus of claim 9 , wherein:

the one or more contact terminals of the flexible strap comprise one or more loops, each connecting with one or more pins with the lifting member.

11. The locking apparatus of claim 10 , wherein:

the one or more pins are in contact with one or more terminal contacts associated with the lifting member; and the locking apparatus configured to detect a status of electrical contact between the one or more pins and the one or more terminal contacts.

12. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the lifting member is hingedly connected to the bottom portion of the central member.

13. The locking apparatus of claim 12 , wherein:

the lifting member is hingedly connected to the bottom portion of the central member nearer to the distal side than the proximal side of the locking apparatus.

14. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap comprises a textile strap.

15. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap is operable to transfer energy received by the lifting member from the openable element based at least in part upon contact between the lifting member and the openable element into the base.

16. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap is configured to be maintained in tension when the lifting member is in a raised position.

17. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , wherein:

the flexible strap is configured to permit the lifting member to flex based at least in part upon contact between the lifting member and the openable element such that the contact surface of the lifting member fully engages the openable element.

18. The locking apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one resilience member associated with the flexible strap, the at least one resilience member connected to the lifting member and configured to buffer one or more forces received by the flexible strap.

19. The locking apparatus of claim 18 , wherein:

the at least one resilience member is configured to at least partially enable the contact surface of the lifting member to fully engage the openable element upon contact between the lifting member and the openable element.

20. The locking apparatus of claim 19 , wherein:

the at least one resilient member comprises a spring.
