Abstract

The disclosure relates to a device that is configured to be implanted on the native leaflet of a heart valve to increase its length and/or thickness and thereby to improve the valve function and reduce regurgitation. The device may include a leaflet section. The leaflet section may include a central member. The central member may include a first portion, a second portion that opposes the first portion, and a base portion disposed between the first portion and the second portion. The first section may extend from the first portion and the second section may extend from the second portion. The device may include one or more engaging members extending from the central member at an angle with respect to the first section and the second section. The second section may be larger than the first section. The leaflet section may define a three-dimensional region or a bulge.

6. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant is configured to be retained on the native valve leaflet without an additional securing mechanism.

7. The implant of claim 6 , wherein the first and second arms are biased toward a closed configuration, and wherein a biasing force between the first and second arms is sufficient to retain the implant on the native valve leaflet without the additional securing mechanism.

8. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the leaflet section has a curved shape.

9. The implant of claim 8 , wherein the leaflet section further comprises a first portion on a first side of the internal leaflet section volume and a second portion on a second, opposite side of the internal leaflet section volume, wherein the first portion and the second portion each have a convex curvature.

10. The implant of claim 9 , wherein a radius of curvature of the first portion is different from a radius of curvature of the second portion.

11. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the leaflet section further includes a central spine spaced from the first and second arms.

12. The implant of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more engaging members comprises a curved segment.

13. The implant of claim 1 , wherein a longitudinal axis of the leaflet section is transverse to a longitudinal axis of the first arm.

14. The implant of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the first arm and the second arm comprises a tissue gripping member positioned on a surface configured to face the native valve leaflet.

15. The implant of claim 14 , wherein the tissue gripping member is formed separately on a plate and then coupled to the first arm or the second arm.

16. The implant of claim 15 , wherein the plate extends into the internal leaflet section volume.

17. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the cover extends over at least a part of one or more of the first arm and the second arm.

18. An implant for reducing heart valve regurgitation, the implant comprising:

a leaflet section comprising an internal leaflet section volume, wherein the leaflet section is configured to modify one or more of a leaflet length, a leaflet curvature, and a leaflet thickness of a native valve leaflet;

first and second arms each extending from the leaflet section, wherein the first and second arms have a closed configuration in which the first arm is disposed within an opening defined by the second arm and an open configuration, and wherein the first and second arms are configured to clamp the native valve leaflet therebetween in the closed configuration; and

a cover coupled to the leaflet section and enclosing the internal leaflet section volume.

19. The implant of claim 18 , wherein the leaflet section is configured to modify the leaflet length of the native valve leaflet.

20. The implant of claim 18 , wherein the leaflet section is configured to modify the leaflet curvature of the native valve leaflet.

21. An implant for reducing heart valve regurgitation, the implant comprising:

a leaflet section comprising an internal leaflet section volume, wherein the leaflet section is configured to reduce a gap between first and second native valve leaflets;

first and second arms each extending from the leaflet section, wherein the first and second arms have a closed configuration and an open configuration, and wherein the first and second arms are configured to clamp the first native valve leaflet therebetween in the closed configuration, with a free end of the first native valve leaflet disposed within the internal leaflet section volume;

a tissue gripping member extending into the internal leaflet section volume when the first and second arms are in the closed configuration and such that the tissue gripping member engages a portion of the first native valve leaflet that is disposed within the internal leaflet section volume; and

a cover coupled to the leaflet section and enclosing the internal leaflet section volume.

22. The implant of claim 21 , wherein the leaflet section further comprises a central spine.

23. The implant of claim 21 , wherein the first and second arms are biased toward the closed configuration, and wherein a biasing force between the first and second arms is sufficient to retain the implant on the first native valve leaflet without an additional securing mechanism.

24. The implant of claim 21 , wherein the leaflet section further comprises a first portion on a first side of the internal leaflet section volume and a second portion on a second, opposite side of the internal leaflet section volume, wherein the first portion and the second portion each have a convex curvature.

25. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the one or more engaging members extend laterally relative to and beyond the first and second arms.

26. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the one or more engaging members include a linear segment and a curvature segment.
