Abstract

The disclosure provides a pod propulsion system including first and second counter rotating propellers for providing thrust to propel a marine vessel. The pod propulsion system includes a first electric motor (i) for rotating the first propeller and (ii) electrically coupled to a first drive, the first drive being configured to control the first motor and a second electric motor (i) for rotating the second propeller and (ii) electrically coupled to a second drive, the second drive being configured to control the second motor. The first and second drives respectively control the first and second motors interdependently.

Claims (25)

1. A pod propulsion system including first and second counter rotating propellers for providing thrust to propel a marine vessel, comprising:

a first electric motor (i) for rotating the first counter rotating propeller and (ii) electrically coupled to a first drive, the first drive being configured to control the first electric motor; and

a second electric motor (i) for rotating the second counter rotating propeller and (ii) electrically coupled to a second drive, the second drive being configured to control the second electric motor;

wherein the first and second drives respectively control the first and second electric motors interdependently, wherein when one of the first and second drives is simultaneously operating both of the first and second electric motors, each of the first and second electric motors only operates at a reduced power level.

2. A pod propulsion system including first and second counter rotating propellers for providing thrust to propel a marine vessel, comprising:

a first electric motor (i) for rotating the first counter rotating propeller and (ii) electrically coupled to a first drive, the first drive being configured to control the first electric motor; and

a second electric motor (i) for rotating the second counter rotating propeller and (ii) electrically coupled to a second drive, the second drive being configured to control the second electric motor;

wherein the first and second drives respectively control the first and second electric motors interdependently, wherein each of the first and second drives only operates when the other of the first and second drives is not operating.

3. The pod propulsion system of claim 1 , wherein when the first and second drives are operating simultaneously, rotational speed of the first and second counter rotating propellers are substantially equal.

4. The pod propulsion system of claim 1 , further comprising a switch, wherein the switch is configurable to enable each of the first and second drives to simultaneously operate both of the first and second electric motors.

5. The pod propulsion system of claim 4 , wherein the switch includes a first portion and a second portion;

wherein the first portion selects one of the first and second drives; and

wherein the second portion connects one or more of the first and second electric motors to the selected one of the first and second drives.

6. The pod propulsion system of claim 5 , wherein the first and second motors are housed within a pod of the pod propulsion system; and

wherein one of the first and second portions of the switch is housed within the pod and the other of the first and second portions is housed external to the pod.

7. The pod propulsion system of claim 1 , wherein at least the first drive or the second drive is a variable frequency drive.

8. The pod propulsion system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second electric motors is one from the group including an synchronous motor, a permanent magnet motor, and an induction motor.

9. The pod propulsion system of claim 8 , wherein each of the first and second electric motors is three or more phases.

10. The pod propulsion system of claim 8 , wherein each of the first and second electric motors includes three-phases, six-phases, or nine-phases.

11. The pod propulsion system of claim 1 , further comprising a slip-ring configured to transfer electrical signals from the first and second drives to the first and second electric motors.

12. A pod propulsion system including first and second counter rotating propellers for providing thrust to propel a marine vessel, comprising:

first and second electric motors for (i) respectively rotating the first and second counter rotating propellers and (ii) electrically coupled to first and second drives, the first and second drives being configured to control the first and second electric motors, respectively; and

wherein the first and second drives respectively control the first and second electric motors interdependently, wherein when one of the first and second drives is simultaneously operating both of the first and second electric motors, each of the first and second motors only operates at a reduced power level.

13. The pod propulsion system of claim 12 , wherein when the first and second drives are operating simultaneously, rotational speed of the first and second counter rotating propellers being substantially equal.

14. The pod propulsion system of claim 12 , further comprising a switch, wherein the switch is configurable to enable each of the first and second drives to simultaneously operate both of the first and second electric motors.
