Abstract

An aerial device for operating on energized powerlines is disclosed. The aerial device may have a boom assembly with a lower, electrically non-insulating boom section coupled to an upper, electrically insulating boom section. The lower and upper boom sections may be coupled by a pinned connection that utilizes structural collars and structural pins to handle loads applied to the upper boom section. The upper boom section may articulate relative to the lower boom section using a 4-bar mechanism employing a split pivot pin that enables a greater range of motion for the articulation. A modular sled that can be coupled to various boom assemblies is also disclosed.

Claims (40)

1. A steel-composite interface of an aerial device having an electrically insulating portion, comprising:

at least one collar received within an opening of the electrically insulating portion;

a structural member comprising a first side and a second side and at least partially surrounding the electrically insulating portion; and

at least one pin extending through the first side of the structural member, through the electrically insulating portion and the at least one collar, and through the second side of the structural member such that loads applied to the electrically insulating portion are transferred therefrom to the at least one collar, to the at least one pin, and to the structural member.

2. The steel-composite interface of claim 1 , wherein the structural member further comprises:

an upper end surrounding the electrically insulating portion; and

a lower end coupled to a non-electrically insulating portion of the aerial device.

3. The steel-composite interface of claim 1 ,

wherein the at least one pin comprises a first pin and a second pin and the at least one collar comprises a first collar and a second collar, and

wherein the first pin extends through the first collar and the second pin extends through the second collar.

4. The steel-composite interface of claim 3 ,

wherein the first pin is in contact with the first collar, and

wherein a gap separates the first pin and the electrically insulating portion.

5. The steel-composite interface of claim 4 , wherein the second pin forms a close fit with the electrically insulating portion.

6. The steel-composite interface of claim 1 , wherein the at least one collar comprises steel and the electrically insulating portion comprises fiberglass.

7. The steel-composite interface of claim 1 , wherein the at least one collar comprises a first cross-sectional shape matching a second cross-sectional shape of the electrically insulating portion.

8. The steel-composite interface of claim 7 , wherein the second cross-sectional shape is one of a rectangular shape or a circular shape.

9. A connecting assembly for a boom assembly of an aerial device, comprising:

a steel structural member having a first side opposing a second side;

an electrically insulating upper boom section at least partially received between the first side and the second side of the steel structural member, the electrically insulating upper boom section comprising an internal bore; and

at least one pin extending through the first side, the electrically insulating upper boom section, and the second side.

10. The connecting assembly of claim 9 , further comprising at least one collar received within the internal bore of the electrically insulating upper boom section or received on an exterior surface of the electrically insulating upper boom section.

11. The connecting assembly of claim 10 , wherein the at least one collar is pivotable about the at least one pin.

12. The connecting assembly of claim 10 , wherein the at least one collar forms a close fit with the electrically insulating upper boom section.

13. The connecting assembly of claim 10 , wherein moment and shear loads applied to the electrically insulating upper boom section are transferred from the electrically insulating upper boom section to the at least one collar, from the at least one collar to the at least one pin, and from the at least one pin to the steel structural member.

14. The connecting assembly of claim 9 , wherein the steel structural member comprises an upper end that at least partially receives the electrically insulating upper boom section and a lower end coupled to a non-insulating lower boom section.

15. A steel-composite interface of an aerial device, comprising:

an electrically insulating composite section;

a steel structure comprising a first side contacting a first region of an exterior surface of the electrically insulating composite section and a second side opposite the first side and contacting a second region of the exterior surface of the electrically insulating composite section;

a first fastener inserted through the steel structure and through the electrically insulating composite section; and

a second fastener inserted through the steel structure and through the electrically insulating composite section.

16. The steel-composite interface of claim 15 , further comprising:

a first collar configured to receive the first fastener; and

a second collar configured to receive the second fastener,

wherein the first collar and the second collar are received within an internal bore of the electrically insulating composite section or are coupled to the exterior surface of the electrically insulating composite section.

17. The steel-composite interface of claim 15 , wherein the electrically insulating composite section comprises a first opening for receiving the first fastener and a second opening for receiving the second fastener, and further comprising:

a first spacer received within the first opening and configured to receive the first fastener and a second spacer received within the second opening and configured to receive the second fastener.

18. The steel-composite interface of claim 17 , wherein the first spacer and the second spacer form a close fit with the electrically insulating composite section.

19. The steel-composite interface of claim 15 , wherein the steel-composite interface couples to a boom tip.

20. The steel-composite interface of claim 15 , wherein the first fastener comprises one of a pin, a trunnion, or a bolt.
