Abstract

An electrically heated smoking system includes a secondary unit capable of receiving a smoking article having an aerosol-forming substrate. The secondary unit includes at least one heating element and an interface for connection to a primary power supply for supplying electrical power to the at least one heating element during a pre-heating mode, to increase the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate to an operating temperature. The secondary unit further includes a secondary power supply arranged to supply electrical power to the at least one heating element during a smoking mode, to maintain the temperature of the aerosol-forming substrate at substantially the operating temperature. The secondary unit also includes secondary circuitry. The electrically heated smoking system optionally includes a primary unit.

Claims (41)

1. An electrically heated smoking system comprising:

a housing;

at least one heating element within the housing;

an interface on the housing for external connection to a primary power supply, the interface configured to supply electrical power from the primary power supply to the at least one heating element during a pre-heating mode to increase a temperature of an aerosol-forming substrate to an operating temperature;

a secondary power supply within the housing, the secondary power supply configured to supply electrical power to the at least one heating element during a consuming mode during which the electrically heated smoking system is separated from the primary power supply; and

secondary circuitry within the housing, the secondary circuity configured to control the secondary power supply in supplying electrical power to the at least one heating element, the secondary circuitry configured to monitor plural operating modes of the smoking system during the consuming mode and control the supply of electrical power to the at least one heating element based on a detected event associated with one of the monitored operating modes.

2. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 1 , wherein the secondary power supply is chargeable by the primary power supply during a charging mode.

3. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 1 , wherein the interface is configured to provide bi-directional communication between the electrically heated smoking system and an external device.

4. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 1 , wherein the secondary circuitry is configured to control a supply of electrical power from the primary power supply to the at least one heating element during the pre-heating mode.

5. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 1 , wherein the housing is insulated to reduce heat loss.

6. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a display configured to display an elapsed time.

7. An electrically heated smoking system comprising:

a primary unit including a primary power supply; and

a secondary unit, the secondary unit including,

a housing,

at least one heating element within the housing,

an interface on the housing, the interface configured to connect the secondary unit to the primary power supply, the primary power supply configured to supply electrical power to the at least one heating element during a preheating mode, and to increase a temperature of a substrate to an operating temperature,

a secondary power supply within the housing, the secondary power supply configured to supply electrical power to the at least one heating element during a consuming mode during which the electrically heated smoking system is separated from the primary power supply, and

secondary circuitry within the housing, the secondary circuitry configured to control the secondary power supply in supplying electrical power to the at least one heating element, the secondary circuitry configured to monitor plural operating modes of the smoking system during the consuming mode and control the supply of electrical power to the at least one heating element based on a detected event associated with one of the monitored operating modes,

wherein only the primary power supply is configured to increase the temperature of the substrate to the operating temperature during the preheating mode and only the secondary power supply is configured to maintain the operating temperature in the substrate at substantially the operating temperature during the consuming mode.

8. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , wherein the secondary unit is insulated to reduce heat loss.

9. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , the secondary circuitry is configured to detect at least one of a number of puffs or a time duration of the consuming mode and generate a signal responsive to detecting at least one of a maximum puff count or a maximum time duration of the consuming mode.

10. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , wherein the primary unit further includes,

primary circuitry, the primary circuitry configured to control the supply of electrical power from the primary power supply to the at least one heating element during the preheating mode.

11. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 10 , wherein the primary circuitry is configured to generate a signal indicative of the preheating mode being complete and that a smoker may begin a smoking experience.

12. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , comprising:

a docking port in the primary unit configured to receive the secondary unit and

a protrusion on the secondary unit configured to connect the secondary unit to the primary unit of the smoking system when docked in the docking port.

13. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , wherein the secondary unit is configured to be inserted into the primary unit.

14. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , wherein the secondary circuitry is configured to receive data for determining whether a consumable is ready.

15. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , wherein the secondary unit is cylindrical.

16. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 15 , wherein the secondary unit has a diameter of about 7.9 mm and a length of about 70 to 128 mm.

17. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 7 , wherein the primary unit further includes,

a base, the base including,

a plurality of holders configured to hold articles containing the substrate, the plurality of holders extending in a longitudinal direction of the base, and

a docking port configured to be electrically coupled with the primary power supply, the docking port extending in the longitudinal direction of the base, the docking port being longer than the holders with respect to the longitudinal direction of the base.

18. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of holders and the docking port are cylindrical.

19. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 17 , wherein the docking port is configured to receive the secondary unit.

20. The electrically heated smoking system of claim 17 , wherein the primary unit further includes,

a lid connected to the base by a hinge, the lid being arranged such that the lid is configured to close onto the base when the secondary unit is in the docking port.
