Abstract

A wind turbine powertrain assembly including a gearbox coupled to an electrical power generator for a wind turbine. The power generator comprises a stator at a radially outward position and a rotor in a radially inward position, wherein the rotor comprises a cylindrical field structure that is configured to rotate about a generator rotor axis, and wherein the rotor is configured to define a central hollow portion. The rotor further comprises a rotor support frame connected to and structurally supporting the cylindrical field structure, wherein the rotor support frame comprises: a rotor connection flange attaching the rotor support frame to the cylindrical field structure, a gearbox connecting flange connecting the rotor support frame to an output drive shaft of the gearbox, and a transition section extending between the rotor connection flange and the gearbox connection flange, the transition section defined at least in part by one or more stepping regions, the or each stepping region shaped to define a surface that is inclined at an angle of less than 30 degrees to the rotor axis. Advantageously, the stepping regions provide an integrated platform inside the hollow portion on which service personnel can stand to work inside the generator.

Claims (26)

1. A wind turbine powertrain assembly including a gearbox coupled to an electrical power generator for a wind turbine,

wherein the power generator comprises a stator at a radially outward position and a rotor in a radially inward position, wherein the rotor comprises a cylindrical field structure that is configured to rotate about a generator rotor axis (R), and wherein the rotor is configured to define a central hollow portion,

wherein the rotor further comprises a rotor support frame connected to and structurally supporting the cylindrical field structure,

wherein the rotor support frame comprises:

a rotor connection flange attaching the rotor support frame to the cylindrical field structure,

a gearbox connecting flange connecting the rotor support frame to an output drive shaft of the gearbox, and

a transition section extending between the rotor connection flange and the gearbox connection flange, the transition section defined at least in part by one or more stepping regions configured to provide access within the rotor support frame for a person standing therein, the or each stepping region shaped to define a surface that is inclined at an angle of less than 30 degrees to the rotor axis.

2. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein the or each stepping region provides a circumferentially-extending stepping surface extending about the rotor axis.

3. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , comprising a plurality of separate stepping regions.

4. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of separate stepping regions is separated by respective strengthening ribs.

5. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein the transition section further includes an axially-facing end surface.

6. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 5 , wherein the axially-facing end surface is generally aligned along the direction of the rotor axis (R) with the gearbox connection flange.

7. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 5 , wherein the one or more stepping regions are positioned between the axially-facing end surface and the rotor connection flange, along the direction of the rotor axis (R).

8. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 5 , wherein the axially-facing end surface comprises a plurality of access apertures.

9. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of access apertures each have an open area of at least 100 cm 2 .

10. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of access apertures each have an open area of at least 200 cm 2 .

11. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein a distance (A) along the rotational axis between the gearbox connection flange and the rotor connection flange is between 20% and 60% of the internal diameter of the rotor connection flange.

12. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rotor connection flange and the transition section form a first unitary component.

13. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 12 , wherein the first unitary component is mechanically connected to the gearbox connection flange at a bolt ring radially inward of the axially-facing end surface.

14. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a generator service cabinet that houses the rotor.

15. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 14 , wherein the generator service cabinet is connected to a gearbox housing.

16. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 14 , wherein the generator service cabinet defines an internal chamber which houses the rotor, and wherein the generator service cabinet is provided with one or more closure elements which are configured to selectively close an opening defined by the generator service cabinet into the internal chamber.

17. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein the gearbox includes at least one planetary gear stage.

18. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein a distance (A) along the rotational axis between the gearbox connection flange and the rotor connection flange is between 20% and 40% of the internal diameter of the rotor connection flange.

19. The wind turbine powertrain assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rotor connection flange and the transition section form part of a first unitary component and the gearbox connection flange forms part of a second unitary component coupled to the first unitary component.

20. A wind turbine comprising a wind turbine powertrain assembly according to claim 1 .
