Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods for measuring a force applied to a joint during a surgical procedure are disclosed. The device includes an insertion tool, a handle, and one or more force indicators. The insertion tool includes an insertion end and a base end. The one or more force indicators may be attached to the insertion tool and the handle. The insertion end of the device may be inserted into a joint during a surgical procedure and used to apply a force to the joint and/or measure the force using the one or more force indicators when the force is applied.

Claims (28)

1. A device for use during a surgical procedure, the device comprising:

a body having a top portion;

an insertion tool operatively coupled to the top portion of the body, the insertion tool having:

a pair of prongs comprising an upper surface and a lower surface opposing the upper surface, the pair of prongs sized, shaped, and spaced to contact a femoral condyle at a pair of spaced femoral locations by the upper surface and to contact a tibial condyle opposing the femoral condyle at a pair of spaced tibial locations by the lower surface;

a bend positioned between the body and the pair of prongs so that the pair of prongs are positioned at an angle relative to the body; and

a pivot feature disposed between the pair of prongs and the bend, the pivot feature comprising a protrusion extending from the lower surface, wherein the pivot feature is configured to concentrate stress forces on the insertion tool at a predetermined location along the bend; and

a force indicator module configured to measure one or more forces applied to at least one of the femoral condyle and the tibial condyle by the insertion tool based on at least the stress forces on the insertion tool.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the force indicator module comprises a strain gauge, and

wherein the body is configured to house a control circuit, the control circuit being operatively coupled to the strain gauge, a battery, and a wireless antenna.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the strain gauge comprises a sensor selected from the group consisting of a piezo effect sensor, a Hall effect sensor, and an inductive sensor.

4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the force indicator module comprises a display in communication with the strain gauge.

5. The device of claim 2 , further comprising a robotic surgical system in communication with the wireless antenna.

6. The device of claim 2 , wherein the strain gauge is configured to record a measurement selected from the group consisting of a minimum force measurement, a maximum force measurement, and combinations thereof.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the measurement is recorded based on one or more received triggers, wherein the one or more received triggers are selected from the group consisting of: a user input, a user gesture, a user voice, temporal components, a determined force being applied, a rotational force being applied, and a sensor input.

8. A system for use during a surgical procedure, the system comprising:

a device comprising:

a body having a top portion and comprising a control circuit;

an insertion tool operatively coupled to the top portion of the body, the insertion tool having:

a pair of prongs comprising an upper surface and a lower surface opposing the upper surface, the pair of prongs sized, shaped, and spaced to contact a femoral condyle at a pair of spaced femoral locations by the upper surface and to contact a tibial condyle opposing the femoral condyle at a pair of spaced tibial locations by the lower surface;

a bend positioned between the body and the pair of prongs so that the pair of prongs are positioned at an angle relative to the body; and

a pivot feature disposed between the pair of prongs and the bend, the pivot feature comprising a protrusion extending from the lower surface, wherein the pivot feature is configured to concentrate stress forces on the insertion tool at a predetermined location along the bend; and

a force indicator module comprising a strain gauge, wherein the force indicator module is configured to measure one or more forces applied to at least one of the femoral condyle and the tibial condyle by the insertion tool based on at least the stress forces on the insertion tool; and

a robotic surgical system in communication with the control circuit.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the strain gauge comprises a sensor selected from the group consisting of a piezo effect sensor, a Hall effect sensor, and an inductive sensor.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the force indicator module comprises a display in communication with the strain gauge.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the strain gauge is configured to record a measurement selected from the group consisting of a minimum force measurement, a maximum force measurement, and combinations thereof.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the measurement is recorded based on one or more received triggers.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more received triggers are selected from the group consisting of: a user input, a user gesture, a user voice, temporal components, a determined force being applied, a rotational force being applied, and a sensor input.
