Abstract

An electric powertrain includes a first electric motor that has an uninterrupted connection with a drive shaft of a vehicle. The electric powertrain further includes a second electric motor that has an interruptible connection with the drive shaft. In one form, this interruptible connection includes a clutch. The electric powertrain further includes a first gear train in the form of a first planetary gear and a second gear train in the form of a second planetary gear. The first gear train, second gear train, and clutch are arranged downstream from the first electric motor and second electric motor.

Claims (82)

1. A powertrain system, comprising:

an output;

a first electric motor connected to the output;

a second electric motor;

an intermediate gear train connected to the second electric motor;

a second gear train connected to the intermediate gear train;

wherein the second gear train has a clutch configured to selectively connect the second gear train to the output; and

wherein the first electric motor has an uninterrupted direct connection to the output and the second electric motor has an interruptible connection to the output.

2. The powertrain system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first output shaft connected to the first electric motor;

wherein the first output shaft is connected to the output;

wherein the first output shaft extends through the second electric motor;

wherein the first output shaft extends through the intermediate gear train; and

wherein the first output shaft extends through the second gear train.

3. The powertrain system of claim 2 , wherein:

the first output shaft has a clutch engagement member; and

the clutch is configured to selectively engage the clutch engagement member.

4. The powertrain system of claim 3 , further comprising:

a second output shaft connected between the second electric motor and the intermediate gear train;

an intermediate output shaft connected between the intermediate gear train and the second gear train; and

wherein the first output shaft extends through the second output shaft in a concentric manner.

5. The powertrain system of claim 2 , wherein the first electric motor is located upstream relative to the second electric motor.

6. The powertrain system of claim 1 , wherein the intermediate gear train includes an intermediate planetary gear.

7. The powertrain system of claim 6 , wherein:

the intermediate planetary gear includes an intermediate sun gear;

the intermediate planetary gear includes one or more intermediate planet gears that engage the intermediate sun gear in an orbital manner; and

the intermediate planetary gear includes an intermediate ring gear that surrounds and engages the intermediate planet gears.

8. The powertrain system of claim 6 , wherein the second gear train includes a second planetary gear.

9. The powertrain system of claim 8 , wherein the second planetary gear includes a sun gear, a ring gear, and one or more planet gears engaged between the sun gear and the ring gear.

10. The powertrain system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a first output shaft connected to the first electric motor;

wherein the first output shaft is connected to the output;

wherein the first output shaft has a clutch engagement member;

a second output shaft connected between the second electric motor and the intermediate gear train;

wherein the second gear train includes a first range member connected to the planet gears of the second planetary gear;

an intermediate output shaft having a second range member; and

wherein the clutch is configured to selectively engage the first range member, the second range member, and the clutch engagement member.

11. The powertrain system of claim 10 , wherein the clutch includes a positive clutch.

12. The powertrain system of claim 11 , wherein the positive clutch includes a dog clutch.

13. A powertrain system, comprising:

an output;

a first electric motor connected to the output;

a first output shaft connected to the first electric motor;

wherein the first output shaft is directly connected to the output;

a second electric motor;

an intermediate gear train connected to the second electric motor;

a second gear train connected to the intermediate gear train;

wherein the second gear train has a clutch configured to selectively connect the second gear train to the output; and

wherein the first output shaft extends through the intermediate gear train.

14. The powertrain system of claim 13 , wherein:

the first output shaft has a clutch engagement member; and

the clutch is configured to selectively engage the clutch engagement member.

15. The powertrain system of claim 14 , further comprising:

a second output shaft connected between the second electric motor and the intermediate gear train;

an intermediate output shaft connected between the intermediate gear train and the second gear train; and

wherein the first output shaft extends through the second output shaft in a concentric manner.

16. The powertrain system of claim 13 , wherein the first electric motor is located upstream relative to the second electric motor.

17. A powertrain system, comprising:

an output;

a first electric motor connected to the output;

a first output shaft connected to the first electric motor;

wherein the first output shaft is connected to the output;

a second electric motor;

an intermediate gear train connected to the second electric motor;

a second gear train connected to the intermediate gear train;

wherein the second gear train has a clutch configured to selectively connect the second gear train to the output;

wherein the first output shaft has a clutch engagement member;

a second output shaft connected between the second electric motor and the intermediate gear train;

wherein the second gear train has a first range member;

an intermediate output shaft having a second range member; and

a clutch configured to selectively engage the first range member, the second range member, and the clutch engagement member.

18. The powertrain system of claim 17 , wherein the clutch includes a positive clutch.

19. The powertrain system of claim 18 , wherein the positive clutch includes a dog clutch.

20. A powertrain system, comprising:

an output;

a first electric motor connected to the output;

a second electric motor;

wherein the second electric motor is located between the first electric motor and the output;

an intermediate gear train connected to the second electric motor;

a second gear train connected to the intermediate gear train;

wherein the Intermediate gear train and the second gear train are located between the second electric motor and the output; and

wherein the second gear train has a clutch configured to selectively connect the second gear train to the output.
