Abstract

A communication system is disclosed in which a base station receives, from at least one further base station, information identifying at least one respective tracking area associated with at least one cell of each further base station. The base station also receives, from a core network, information identifying a registration area for a user equipment (UE). The base station defines, based on the received information identifying at least one respective tracking area and the received information identifying a registration area, a radio access network (RAN) based notification area for the UE.

Claims (29)

1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

receiving, from a radio access network (RAN) node, a message for causing the UE to move to a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state, the message including RAN area information for configuring the UE with a RAN-based notification area configured, taking account of a registration area for the UE and connectivity between the RAN node and at least one further RAN node, to represent an area within which the UE can move while remaining in the RRC inactive state,

wherein the RAN area information includes configuration information for indicating a RAN-based notification area, the configuration information being defined to include:

a tracking area code and at least one RAN area code corresponding to the tracking area code; or

at least one cell identity corresponding to the RAN-based notification area.

2. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

at least one processor configured to process the instructions to:

receive, from a radio access network (RAN) node, a message for causing the UE to move to a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state, the message including RAN area information for configuring the UE with a RAN-based notification area configured, taking account of a registration area for the UE and connectivity between the RAN node and at least one further RAN node, to represent an area within which the UE can move while remaining in the RRC inactive state,

wherein the RAN area information includes configuration information for indicating a RAN-based notification area, the configuration information being defined to include:

a tracking area code and at least one RAN area code corresponding to the tracking area code, or

at least one cell identity corresponding to the RAN-based notification area.

3. A method performed by a radio access network (RAN) node, the method comprising:

transmitting, to a user equipment (UE), a message for causing the UE to move to a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state, the message including RAN area information for configuring the UE, taking account of a registration area for the UE and connectivity with at least one further RAN node, with a RAN based notification area,

wherein the RAN based notification area represents an area within which the UE can move while remaining in the RRC inactive state, and

wherein the RAN area information includes configuration information for indicating a RAN-based notification area, the configuration information being defined to include:

a tracking area code and at least one RAN area code corresponding to the tracking area code, or

at least one cell identity corresponding to the RAN-based notification area.

4. A radio access network (RAN) node comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

at least one processor configured to process the instructions to:

transmit, to a user equipment (UE), a message for causing the UE to move to a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state, the message including RAN area information for configuring the UE, taking account of a registration area for the UE and connectivity with at least one further RAN node, with a RAN based notification area,

wherein the RAN based notification area represents an area within which the UE can move while remaining in the RRC inactive state,

wherein the RAN area information includes configuration information for indicating a RAN-based notification area, the configuration information being defined to include:

a tracking area code and at least one RAN area code corresponding to the tracking area code, or p 3 at least one cell identity corresponding to the RAN-based notification area.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting, to the RAN node, a message for resuming a connection, the message including information indicating a RAN based notification area update; and

receiving, from the RAN node, information for keeping the UE in the RRC inactive state and for configuring the UE with a RAN based notification area.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the RAN area information includes a Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) identity corresponding to the RAN-based notification area.
