Abstract

A robotic surgical system configured for the articulation of a catheter comprises an input device, a control computer, and an instrument driver having at least one motor for displacing the pull-wire of a steerable catheter wherein the control computer is configured to determine the desired motor torque or tension of the pull-wire of a catheter based on user manipulation of the input device. The control computer is configured to output the desired motor torque or tension of the pull-wire to the instrument driver, whereby at least one motor of the instrument driver implements the desired motor torque to cause the desired pull-wire tension to articulate the distal tip of the catheter.

Claims (43)

1. A method comprising:

generating positioning information for a desired position for a distal portion of a catheter which is steerable;

communicating the positioning information to a control system;

converting the positioning information into an output motor torque;

communicating the output motor torque to an instrument driver thereby causing the instrument driver to articulate the distal portion of the catheter;

measuring a current motor torque; and

adjusting an electrical current of at least one motor in response to an error signal that the current motor torque is different from the output motor torque.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising manipulating an input device to generate the positioning information, the manipulating the input device being performed by a human user.

3. The method of claim 1 , the catheter including a pull-wire, the communicating the output motor torque to the instrument driver thereby causing the instrument driver to articulate the distal portion of the catheter comprising driving the pull-wire.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising measuring a tension applied to the pull-wire.

5. The method of claim 4 , the instrument driver providing a limit of a maximum tension applied to the pull-wire as the instrument driver drives the pull-wire.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising providing haptic feedback to a user, the haptic feedback being based on the measured tension applied to the pull-wire.

7. The method of claim 1 , the catheter including a flexible shaft, the distal portion of the catheter reaching an articulated state independent of a curvature in a proximal region of the flexible shaft.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising communicating an output motor angular displacement to the instrument driver, the instrument driver driving articulation of the distal portion of the catheter based on the communicated output motor torque and based on the communicated output motor angular displacement.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling the instrument driver to provide dynamic variable stiffness in the catheter.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling the instrument driver to provide articulation of the distal portion of the catheter at a constant force.

11. The method of claim 1 , the measuring the current motor torque comprising:

sensing an actual torque of the motor with a torque sensor.

12. The method of claim 1 , the instrument driver being coupled with the distal portion of the catheter via a pull-wire, the instrument driver articulating the distal portion of the catheter by pulling the pull-wire.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising activating the instrument driver to maintain a constant tension in the pull-wire.

14. A method comprising:

generating positioning information for a desired position for a distal portion of a catheter which is steerable;

communicating the positioning information to a control system;

converting the positioning information into an output motor torque;

communicating the output motor torque via a motor of an instrument driver thereby causing the instrument driver to articulate the distal portion of the catheter;

receiving torque data indicating a measured current motor torque; and

determining adjustments to an electrical current supplied to the motor to achieve a desired output motor torque.

15. The method of claim 14 , the motor comprising a servo, the torque data indicating the measured current motor torque being received by the servo.

16. The method of claim 14 , the catheter including a pull-wire, the method further comprising:

applying the adjustments to the electrical current supplied to the motor; and

causing the instrument driver to actuate the pull-wire via the electrical current supplied to the motor to thereby articulate the distal portion of the catheter.

17. A method comprising:

generating positioning information for a desired position for a distal portion of a catheter which is steerable;

communicating the positioning information to a control system;

converting the positioning information into an output motor torque;

communicating the output motor torque via a motor of an instrument driver thereby causing the instrument driver to articulate the distal portion of the catheter;

obtaining current motor torque data representing a current motor torque of the motor; and

using the current motor torque data to adjust a command to the motor.

18. The method of claim 17 , the obtaining the current motor torque data comprising sensing an actual torque of the motor, the method further comprising comparing the actual torque of the motor to a desired torque of the motor.

19. The method of claim 18 , the using the current motor torque data comprising:

determining that the actual torque of the motor is different from the desired torque of the motor; and

adjusting an electrical current of the motor based on the determination that the actual torque of the motor is different from the desired torque of the motor.

20. The method of claim 17 , the instrument driver being coupled with the distal portion of the catheter via a pull-wire, the method further comprising pulling the pull-wire by applying the adjusted command to the motor to thereby articulate the distal portion of the catheter.
