Abstract

A closure device system for sealing a percutaneous puncture in a vessel wall can comprise a toggle configured to engage an interior surface of the vessel wall, a plug configured to engage an exterior surface of the vessel wall, and a suture that extends through the plug and through the toggle along at least a first direction so as to couple the toggle to the plug. The system can further comprise a tube that extends through the plug and through the toggle along the first direction such that a distal end of the tube is disposed distally to the toggle. The tube can define a guidewire lumen that extends therethrough along the first direction. And the guidewire lumen can be configured to receive a guidewire that protrudes from the vessel wall such that the plug, toggle, and tube are slidable along the guidewire toward the vessel wall.

Claims (36)

1. A vascular closure system for sealing a puncture in a vessel wall, comprising:

an anchor configured to seal the puncture in the vessel wall, the anchor having a lower surface and a wall engaging surface opposite the lower surface, a first opening, and a second opening, wherein the first opening and the second opening extend from the wall engaging surface to the lower surface, and a suture that extends at least through the first opening of the anchor so that the anchor is slidable along the suture; and

an elongated tube having a proximal end, a distal end spaced from the proximal end of the elongated tube in a distal direction, and a guide lumen that extends from the distal end toward the proximal end, wherein the elongated tube extends through the second opening such that the distal end of the elongated tube is spaced apart from the anchor in the distal direction, wherein the guide lumen is configured to receive a guidewire such that the anchor and the elongated tube are slidable along the guidewire toward the vessel wall.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a tamper having a first lumen that receives the suture and a second lumen that receives the elongated tube.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the elongated tube is movable relative to the anchor so that the distal end of the elongated tube is removable from the second opening of the anchor in a proximal direction that is opposite the distal direction.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a plug having a first plug opening and a second plug opening separate from the first plug opening, wherein the suture extends through the first plug opening and the elongated tube extends through the second plug opening.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a delivery tube; and

a release tube that restrains at least a portion of the anchor, wherein at least one of the delivery tube and the release tube are moveable relative to the other of the delivery tube and the release tube to release the at least a portion of the anchor.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the elongated tube is coupled to the delivery tube, such that the delivery tube and elongated tube are movable together.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a sheath having a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel that extends therethrough from the distal end toward the proximal end; and

a deployment instrument configured to be inserted into the channel of the sheath, the deployment instrument having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the anchor is carried by the distal end of the deployment instrument.

8. A system for sealing a percutaneous puncture in a vessel wall, the system comprising:

an anchor having: a first end, a second end, a length that extends from the first end to the second end, a lower surface, a wall engaging surface opposite the lower surface, a thickness that extends from the wall engaging surface to the lower surface, a first opening, and a second opening separate from the first opening, wherein the first and second opening extend from the wall engaging surface toward the lower surface, and the thickness is perpendicular to the length;

a suture that extends through the first opening of the anchor; and

an elongated tube having a proximal end, a distal end opposite the proximal end in a distal direction, and a tube lumen that extends from the distal end of the elongated tube toward the proximal end of the elongated tube, wherein the elongated tube extends through the second opening of the anchor along the thickness of the anchor so that the distal end of the elongated tube is spaced from the anchor in the distal direction.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a plug having a first plug opening and a second plug opening separate from the first plug opening, wherein the suture extends through the first plug opening and the elongated tube extends through the second plug opening.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a tamper having a first lumen that extends therethrough and a second lumen that extends therethrough, wherein the suture extends through the first lumen and the elongated tube extends through the second lumen.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the tube lumen is configured to receive a guidewire therethrough such that the anchor and the elongated tube are slidable along the guidewire.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a sheath having a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel that extends therethrough from the distal end toward the proximal end; and

a deployment instrument that is insertable into the channel of the sheath, the deployment instrument having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the anchor is carried by the distal end of the deployment instrument.

13. A vascular closure system for sealing a puncture in a vessel wall, comprising:

an anchor configured to seal the puncture in the vessel wall, the anchor having a lower surface and a wall engaging surface opposite the lower surface, a first opening and a second opening that extend from the wall engaging surface to the lower surface;

a suture that extends at least through the first opening of the anchor;

a tension cartridge coupled to the suture and configured to control application of tension to the suture; and

an elongated tube having a proximal end, a distal end spaced from the proximal end of the elongated tube in a distal direction, and a guide lumen that extends from the distal end toward the proximal end, wherein the elongated tube extends through the tension cartridge and the second opening of the anchor such that the distal end of the elongated tube is spaced apart from the anchor in the distal direction, wherein the guide lumen is configured to receive a guidewire such that the anchor and the elongated tube are slidable along the guidewire.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a tamper having a first lumen that receives the suture and a second lumen that receives the elongated tube.

15. The system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a sheath having a proximal end, a distal end, and a channel that extends therethrough from the distal end toward the proximal end; and

a deployment instrument that is insertable into the channel of the sheath, the deployment instrument having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the anchor is carried by the distal end of the deployment instrument.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising:

a delivery tube; and

a release tube that restrains at least a portion of the anchor, wherein at least one of the delivery tube and the release tube are moveable relative to the other of the delivery tube and the release tube to release the at least a portion of the anchor.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the elongated tube is coupled to the delivery tube, such that the delivery tube and elongated tube are movable together.
