Abstract

The present invention relates to knits that can be used to make rip-resistant sheer hosiery or similar garments, using a specific combination of UHMWPE fiber and stretch fiber, such as spandex. The knit has rip-resistant and anti-microbial properties. Details are provided to avoid problems with pilling and the appearance of bald spots during use. A variation of the knit is useful for activewear.

Claims (39)

1. A knit consisting of a multifilament ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber and a stretch fiber, wherein:

the stretch fiber is selected from spandex, polypropylene and polyester fibers and has an elongation of greater than 30%;

the UHMWPE fiber is colored and has a denier of 100 or less, an elongation of less than or equal to 3.5% and a tensile strength of greater than or equal to 40 cN per dtex;

the filaments of the UHMWPE fiber are twisted together; and

the knit is an 18 gauge or higher plated knit, wherein the plated knit has the UHMWPE fiber on every course and the stretch fiber on every course or every other course such that the plated knit has the UHMWPE fiber being exposed on a first side of the plated knit and the stretch fiber being exposed on a second side of the plated knit opposite the first side.

2. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the knit has a total denier of all fibers of between 30 and 220.

3. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the knit has a total denier of all fibers of 30 or less.

4. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the knit is a 32 gauge or higher plated knit.

5. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the multifilament UHMWPE fiber comprises 20 filaments.

6. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber has a denier from 30 to 50.

7. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the stretch fiber has a denier from 40 to 100.

8. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the stretch fiber has an elongation of greater than 400%.

9. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the knit comprises the stretch fiber on every course.

10. An article of clothing comprising the knit of claim 1 .

11. The article of clothing of claim 10 , wherein the article of clothing is tights, stockings, trouser socks, leggings, a bodysuit, a shirt, or activewear.

12. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber has a denier of 50 or less.

13. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber has a denier of 30 or less.

14. A knit consisting of a multifilament ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber and a stretch fiber, wherein:

the stretch fiber is nylon and spandex fibers and has an elongation of greater than 30%;

the UHMWPE fiber is colored and has a denier of 100 or less, an elongation of less than or equal to 3.5% and a tensile strength of greater than or equal to 40 cN per dtex;

the filaments of the UHMWPE fiber are twisted together;

the knit is an 18 gauge or higher knit; and

the UHMWPE fiber is twisted around the stretch fiber to form a composite yarn comprising the UHMWPE fiber covering the stretch fiber.

15. The knit of claim 14 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber is twisted around the stretch fiber at a twists per meter between 1000 and 4500.

16. The knit of claim 14 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber is twisted around the stretch fiber at a twists per meter of 1500.

17. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the stretch fiber has a denier between 5 and 100.

18. The knit of claim 1 , wherein filaments of the UHMWPE fiber are twisted together at a twists per meter between 157 and 787 which corresponds to a twists per inch between 4 and 20.

19. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber has a denier between 10 and 30.

20. The knit of claim 1 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber is colored using a non-additive method.

21. The knit of claim 14 , wherein the filaments of the UHMWPE fiber are twisted to have a twists per meter between 157 and 2047 which corresponds to a twists per inch between 4 and 52.

22. The knit of claim 14 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber has a denier of 100 or less and the stretch fiber has a denier between 5 and 100.

23. The knit of claim 14 , wherein the stretch fiber has a denier from 20 to 140.

24. The knit of claim 14 , wherein the UHMWPE fiber is twisted around the stretch fiber at a twists per meter between 100 and 4500.

25. The article of claim 10 , wherein the article is tights, stockings or trouser socks, the article comprising:

a first portion comprising the knit of claim 1 ; and

a second portion comprising a non-UHMWPE knit that is free of the UHMWPE fiber.

26. The article of claim 25 , the non-UHMWPE knit comprises nylon and spandex fibers.

27. The article of claim 25 , wherein the second portion comprises one or more areas of high friction and abrasion.

28. The article of claim 27 , wherein the one or more areas of high friction and abrasion comprises heel portions.
