Abstract

Implementations of disclosed systems and methods are capable of changing the frequency or other waveform characteristics dynamically based on receiving feedback about the effect of an electromagnetic pulse radiation on a target electronic device. Various implementations can be configured to emit electromagnetic pulses at a single radio frequency or a plurality of radio frequencies. For example, the frequency of the carrier electromagnetic radiation in a single pulse can change during the pulse interval. As another example, a single electromagnetic pulse can comprise a frequency comb with two or more frequencies.

Claims (21)

1. A system configured to emit electromagnetic radiation, the system comprising:

a hardware computing sub-system;

a programmable radio frequency (RF) generator configured to be controlled by the hardware computing sub-system, the RF generator configured to generate an RF signal having a central frequency in a range from about 1 MHz and to about 100 GHz, the RF signal comprising a plurality of pulses having a pulse duration, a duty cycle, and a pulse amplitude;

an amplifying sub-system configured to amplify the RF signal, the amplifying sub-system comprising a plurality of solid-state amplifiers; and

an antenna sub-system configured to direct an electromagnetic (EM) radiation towards a target electronic system, the EM radiation configured to cause a disruptive effect in the target electronic system at a power level greater than a threshold power level,

wherein the system is configured to:

direct the EM radiation at a first frequency selected from a range of frequencies between a minimum frequency f min and and a maximum frequency f max ;

determine an effect of the EM radiation at the first frequency on the target electronic system; and

direct the EM radiation at a second frequency selected from a range of frequencies between the minimum frequency f min and the maximum frequency f max based on the determined effect, and

wherein a difference between the first frequency and the second frequency is less than or equal to a threshold frequency value when the effect of the EM radiation at the first frequency on the target electronic system comprises a change in a state of the target electronic system.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a target detection sub-system configured to detect a presence of the target electronic system.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the target detection sub-system is further configured to determine the effect of the EM radiation at the first frequency on the target electronic system.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the effect of the EM radiation at the first frequency on the target electronic system comprises no change in a state of the target electronic system.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the change in the state of the target electronic system in response to the EM radiation comprises at least one of a change in movement of the target electronic system, a change in a visual indication provided by the target electronic system, or a change in data transmission rate/mode of the target electronic system.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the threshold frequency value is in a range between 0 MHz and 10 MHz.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein a difference between the first frequency and the second frequency is greater than a threshold frequency value when the effect of the EM radiation at the first frequency on the target electronic system comprises no change in a state of the target electronic system.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the minimum frequency f min is between 1.0 GHz and 2.0 GHz, and wherein the maximum frequency f max is between 2.0 GHz and 4.0 GHz.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first frequency or the second frequency is selected based on an identification of the target electronic system.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first frequency or the second frequency is selected according to a statistical frequency model.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the statistical frequency model is based on historical data of effects caused by different frequencies of the EM radiation on different target electronic systems.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first frequency or the second frequency is selected based on a size, a distance or a type of the target electronic system.
