Abstract

An apparatus is described. The apparatus includes a bolt to be inserted through a first hole in a cooling mass, a second hole in a planar mechanical element and a third hole in an electronic circuit board when the first, second and third holes are aligned. The apparatus includes a first spring element to be coupled to the cooling mass and the bolt. The first spring element is to be deformed from its nominal shape when the bolt is fastened to the electronic circuit board to draw the base of the cooling mass toward the electronic circuit board. The second spring element is to be coupled to the planar mechanical element and the bolt. The second spring element is to be deformed from its nominal shape to draw the planar mechanical element toward the electronic circuit board.

Claims (37)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a bolt to be inserted through a first hole in a cooling mass, a second hole in a planar mechanical element and a third hole in an electronic circuit board when the first, second and third holes are aligned;

a first spring element to be coupled to the cooling mass and the bolt, the first spring element to be deformed from its nominal shape when the bolt is fastened to the electronic circuit board to draw a base of the cooling mass toward the electronic circuit board; and

a second spring element to be coupled to the planar mechanical element and the bolt, the second spring element to be deformed from its nominal shape to draw the planar mechanical element toward the electronic circuit board.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the cooling mass is a heat sink.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the planar mechanical element is a tray that supports a fan that is to blow air through fins of the heat sink.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the tray is between the base of the heat sink and the electronic circuit board.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first and second spring elements are compressed by a head of the bolt.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein one of the first and second spring elements is between another of the first and second spring elements and a shaft of the bolt where the first and second spring elements make contact with the head of the bolt.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein one of the first and second spring elements is inserted through one of the first and second holes.

8. A cooling assembly, comprising:

a bolt fastened to an electronic circuit board;

a base of a cooling mass between a head of the bolt and the electronic circuit board, the bolt inserted through a first hole in the base of the cooling mass;

a planar mechanical element between the head of the bolt and the electronic circuit board, the bolt inserted through a second hole in the planar mechanical element, the first and second holes being aligned with a third hole in an electronic circuit board that the bolt is inserted through;

a first spring element that is coupled to the base of the cooling mass and the bolt, the first spring element being deformed from its nominal shape to draw the base of the cooling mass toward the electronic circuit board; and,

a second spring element that is coupled to the planar mechanical element and the bolt, the second spring element being deformed from its nominal shape to draw the planar mechanical element toward the electronic circuit board.

9. The cooling assembly of claim 8 wherein the cooling mass is a heat sink.

10. The cooling assembly of claim 9 wherein the planar mechanical element is a tray that supports a fan that is to blow air through fins of the heat sink.

11. The cooling assembly of claim 10 wherein the tray is between the base of the heat sink and the electronic circuit board.

12. The cooling assembly of claim 8 wherein the first and second spring elements are compressed by a head of the bolt.

13. The cooling assembly of claim 12 wherein one of the first and second spring elements is between another of the first and second spring elements and a shaft of the bolt where the first and second spring elements make contact with the head of the bolt.

14. The cooling assembly of claim 12 wherein one of the first and second spring elements is inserted through one of the first and second holes.

15. An add-in card, comprising:

a semiconductor chip electrically coupled to an electronic circuit board;

a bolt fastened to the electronic circuit board;

a cooling mass coupled to a semiconductor chip's package, a base of the cooling mass between a head of the bolt and the electronic circuit board, the bolt inserted through a first hole in the base of the cooling mass;

a planar mechanical element between the head of the bolt and the electronic circuit board, the bolt inserted through a second hole in the planar mechanical element, the first and second holes being aligned with a third hole in the electronic circuit board that the bolt is inserted through;

a first spring element that is coupled to the base of the cooling mass and the bolt, the first spring element being deformed from its nominal shape to draw the base of the cooling mass toward the electronic circuit board; and,

a second spring element that is coupled to the planar mechanical element and the bolt, the second spring element being deformed from its nominal shape to draw the planar mechanical element toward the electronic circuit board.

16. The add-in card of claim 15 further comprising a PCIe connector connected to the electronic circuit board.

17. The add-in card of claim 15 wherein the semiconductor chip comprises any of:

graphics processor circuitry;

accelerator circuitry;

neural network circuitry.

18. The add-in card of claim 15 wherein the cooling mass is a heat sink.

19. The add-in card of claim 18 wherein the planar mechanical element is a tray that supports a fan that is to blow air through fins of the heat sink.

20. The add-in card of claim 19 wherein the tray is between the base of the heat sink and the electronic circuit board.
