Abstract

Devices and methods for vascular navigation, assessment and/or diagnosis are described which determine the location of the tip of a vascular catheter using the introduction of a medium with a measurable parameter (e.g., temperature, light reflection, sound reflection, etc.) and sensing and measuring the measurable parameter as the catheter is advanced. Measurements of the parameter are tracked over time, recorded and analyzed. The value of the parameter and/or the shape of the parameter value vs. time curve may be used in the analysis. For example, curve amplitude, variability, standard deviation, slope, etc. may be used in the analysis of catheter location.

Claims (27)

1. A location detection system, comprising:

an elongate body having a distal end and defining a lumen through the elongate body;

a first sensor positioned along the elongate body at or in proximity to the distal end of the elongate body;

a second sensor positioned along the elongate body proximal to the first sensor;

one or more openings located along the elongate body between the first and second sensors, wherein the first and second sensors are positioned on the elongate body such that the first and second sensors are translatable through a catheter lumen such that the first and second sensors and the one or more openings are each positioned distal to a terminal opening of the catheter when measuring at least one parameter of a mixture of a first fluid and a second fluid after the first fluid is emitted from the one or more openings and into the second fluid;

a controller in communication with the first and second sensors, wherein the controller is configured to receive a signal indicative of the at least one parameter of the mixture and is further configured to obtain a position of the first and second sensors within a vasculature of a body of the subject based upon the signal.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the controller is configured to receive the signal as the first and second sensors are moved within the body of the subject.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the elongate body comprises a stylet.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the elongate body comprises a guidewire.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the elongate body comprises a catheter.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the one or more openings are movably positioned relative to the first and second sensors.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the lumen extends at least partially through the elongate body.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the lumen extends entirely through the elongate body.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the first and second sensors are positioned at a fixed distance relative to an opening of the one or more openings.

10. The system of claim 1 further comprising a fluid reservoir in communication with the lumen.

11. A method of determining a location within a body of a subject, comprising:

advancing an elongate body through a catheter lumen defined by a catheter which is positioned intravascularly within the body of the subject, wherein the elongate body includes a first sensor positioned along the elongate body at or in proximity to a distal end of the elongate body and a second sensor positioned along the elongate body proximal to the first sensor;

positioning the first and second sensors and one or more openings located along the elongate body between the first and second sensors distal to a terminal opening of the catheter, wherein the first and second sensors are translatable relative to the catheter;

introducing a first fluid through a lumen defined within the elongate body and through the one or more openings in proximity to a distal end of the elongate body;

measuring a signal via the first sensor and the second sensor of at least one parameter of a mixture of the first fluid and a second fluid after the first fluid is emitted from the one or more openings and into the second fluid; and

determining via a controller in communication with the first and second sensors a position of the first and second sensors within a vasculature of the body of the subject based upon the signal.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the elongate body is advanced intravascularly within the body of the subject while introducing the first fluid.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein determining via a controller comprises determining the position as the first and second sensors are moved within the body of the subject.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the one or more openings are movably positioned relative to the first and second sensors.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the first and second sensors comprise a conductivity sensor.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein introducing a first fluid comprises introducing the first fluid into a blood environment within the body of the subject.

17. The method of claim 11 wherein determining via a controller comprises comparing a known conductivity value of the second fluid within the elongate body against a diluted conductivity value of the mixture.
