Abstract

A method includes measuring a fluid pressure of fluid in a fluid supply line of an infusion pump. The fluid pressure includes a motor pressure and a patient pressure. The method also includes determining the patient pressure. The determining includes removing, by an adaptive filter, to remove the motor pressure from the measured fluid pressure. The removing includes generating a predicted motor pressure based on the current of the motor, generating an error signal based on a comparison between the predicted motor pressure and the measured fluid pressure, and removing the motor pressure from the measured fluid pressure when an error value indicative of the error signal is less than an error threshold. The method also includes adjusting, based on the patient pressure, a setting of the infusion pump. Related methods and articles of manufacture, including apparatuses and computer program products, are also disclosed.

Claims (44)

1. A method, comprising:

measuring, by a pressure sensor, a fluid pressure of a fluid in a fluid supply line of a medical device comprising a pump configured to pump fluid, wherein the medical device is coupled to a patient, the fluid pressure comprising a motor pressure component and a patient pressure component, wherein the motor pressure component is indicative of a current of a motor of the medical device;

determining, by at least one data processor coupled to the pressure sensor, the patient pressure component, by applying at least one filter coupled to the pressure sensor to remove the motor pressure component from the measured fluid pressure; and

adjusting, by the at least one data processor based at least in part on the determined patient pressure component, a setting of the medical device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device comprises at least one of an infusion pump, large volume infusion pump, syringe pump, anesthesia delivery pump, or patient-controlled analgesic pump.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the patient pressure component is indicative of at least one of movement of the patient, and venous pressure.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one filter is a variable digital adaptive filter.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the patient pressure component further comprises:

generating a predicted motor pressure based on the current of the motor;

generating an error signal based on a comparison between the predicted motor pressure and the measured fluid pressure; and

removing the motor pressure from the measured fluid pressure when an error value representative of the error signal is less than an error threshold.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein generating the error signal further comprises applying a tap filter coefficient to the error value.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the patient pressure component further comprises:

determining that the error value is greater than or equal to the error threshold; and

adjusting one or more filter coefficients of the at least one filter, the one or more filter coefficients applied to the current of the motor; and

generating an updated predicted motor pressure based on the adjusted one or more filter coefficients and the current of the motor.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein generating the motor pressure component comprises at least one of measuring the current of the motor using at least one of a back-end EMF reader, a motor current sensor, or a motor torque sensor.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one filter comprises at least one of a linear filter, variable filter, least means squares filter, and recursive least squares filter.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the setting of the medical device further comprises at least one of a speed of fluid flow, delivery rate, an amount of fluid delivered to the patient, or a type of fluid delivered to the patient.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one of disabling the medical device or engaging an occlude to stop flow of fluid to the patient, by the at least one data processor, based at least in part on the determined patient pressure component.

12. A system, comprising:

at least one data processor; and

at least one memory storing instructions which, when executed by the at least one data processor, result in operations comprising:

measuring, by a pressure sensor, a fluid pressure of a fluid in a fluid supply line of a medical device comprising a pump configured to pump fluid and coupled to a patient, the fluid pressure comprising a motor pressure component and a patient pressure component, wherein the motor pressure component is indicative of a current of a motor of the medical device;

determining, by at least one data processor coupled to the pressure sensor, the patient pressure component, by applying at least one filter coupled to the pressure sensor to remove the motor pressure component from the measured fluid pressure; and

adjusting, by the at least one data processor based at least in part on the determined patient pressure component, a setting of the medical device.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the medical device comprises at least one of an infusion pump, large volume infusion pump, syringe pump, anesthesia delivery pump, or patient-controlled analgesic pump.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the patient pressure component is indicative of at least one of movement of the patient, and venous pressure.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one filter is at least one of a variable digital adaptive filter, linear filter, variable filter, least means squares filter, or a recursive least squares filter.
