Abstract

Systems and methods for controlling an implantable pump are provided. For example, the exemplary controller for controlling the implantable pump may only rely on the actuator's current measurement. The controller is robust to pressure and flow changes inside the pump head, and allows fast change of pump's operation point. For example, the controller includes, a two stage, nonlinear position observer module based on a reduced order model of the electromagnetic actuator. The controller includes an algorithm that estimates the position of the moving component of the implantable pump based on the actuator's current measurement and adjusts operation of the pump accordingly. Alternatively, the controller may rely on position measurements and/or velocity estimations.

Claims (32)

1. A pump system comprising:

a pump configured to be in fluid communication with a patient's heart, the pump comprising:

a housing having an inlet and an outlet;

a deformable membrane disposed within the housing;

a magnetic portion coupled to the deformable membrane and comprising at least one magnet; and

an actuator configured to interface with the magnetic portion to cause the deformable membrane to reciprocate in a wave-like manner to produce blood flow from the inlet to the outlet; and

a controller operatively coupled to the pump, the controller configured to be programmed to:

estimate a velocity of the magnetic portion coupled to the deformable membrane based on an electrical signal from the pump; and

adjust at least one of a frequency at which the deformable membrane reciprocates or an amplitude at which the deformable membrane reciprocates based on the velocity of the magnetic portion estimated based on the electrical signal from the pump.

2. The pump system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to be programmed to adjust at least one of the frequency, the amplitude, or a duty cycle.

3. The pump system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to be programmed to adjust a duty cycle of the pump to synchronize a pulsatile flow of the pump with a cardiac cycle of the patient.

4. The pump system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is programmed to cause a portion of the actuator to reciprocate causing sinusoidal movement of the portion of the actuator.

5. The pump system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to be programmed to determine a position of the magnetic portion of the actuator based on the electrical signal, wherein the electrical signal is from a sensor disposed in the pump.

6. The pump system of claim 1 , wherein the pump further comprises at least one sensor to monitor operational parameters of the pump.

7. The pump system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one sensor is a hall effect sensor.

8. The pump system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one electromagnetic coil disposed within the actuator and the signal corresponds to a current in the electromagnetic coil.

9. The pump system of claim 1 , wherein the actuator comprises a stationary component.

10. The pump system of claim 9 , wherein the actuator is configured to be powered by an alternating current that causes the magnetic portion to reciprocate with respect to the stationary component.

11. The pump system of claim 10 , wherein the controller is programmed to determine a position of the magnetic portion based on the electrical signal and wherein the electrical signal is derived from the alternating current.

12. The pump system of claim 9 , wherein the stationary component comprises an electromagnetic assembly configured to generate a magnetic field, and wherein the magnetic portion is configured to reciprocate responsive to the magnetic field.

13. A pump system comprising:

a pump configured to be in fluid communication with a patient's heart, the pump comprising:

a housing having an inlet and an outlet;

a moving component comprising a deformable membrane disposed within the housing; and

an actuator configured to receive an alternating current and cause the deformable membrane to reciprocate in a wave-like manner to produce a blood flow from the inlet to the outlet, the actuator powered by the alternating current; and

a controller operatively coupled to the pump, the controller configured to be programmed to:

estimate a velocity of the moving component comprising the deformable membrane based on an electrical signal from the pump and corresponding to the alternating current; and

adjust an operational parameter of the pump based on the velocity of the moving component estimated based on the electrical signal from the pump.

14. The pump system of claim 13 , wherein the controller is programmed to cause a moving portion of the actuator to reciprocate causing sinusoidal movement of the moving portion of the actuator.

15. The pump system of claim 13 , wherein the actuator further comprises a stationary portion, the stationary portion coupled to the housing.

16. The pump system of claim 15 , wherein the alternating current causes the moving component to reciprocate with respect to the stationary portion.

17. The pump system of claim 15 , wherein the stationary portion comprises an electromagnetic assembly configured to generate a magnetic field, and wherein the moving component further comprises a magnetic assembly configured to reciprocate responsive to the magnetic field.
