Abstract

Examples of hosels and methods to manufacture hosels are generally described herein. In one example, a hosel may include a neck portion configured to receive a golf shaft. The neck portion may have a transition portion that tapers in a downward direction. An insert portion may extend downward from the transition portion and may be configured to be received inside a cavity of a putter-type golf club head. The insert portion may alternate between a first perimeter size and a second perimeter size before tapering toward a terminal end. Other examples may be described and claimed.

Claims (42)

1 . A hosel comprising:

a neck portion configured to receive a golf shaft and comprising a transition portion diminishing in thickness in a downward direction; and

an insert portion extending downward from the transition portion and configured to be received inside a cavity of a putter-type golf club head, the insert portion comprising:

a first channel encircling the insert portion and disposed proximate the transition portion;

a second channel encircling the insert portion and disposed proximate a lower portion of the insert portion; and

a third channel encircling the insert portion and disposed between the first channel and the second channel,

wherein the first channel, the second channel, and the third channel are evenly spaced apart in a longitudinal direction along the insert portion,

wherein the transition portion is configured to establish an interference fit at an opening of the cavity, and

wherein the insert portion is configured to be free from any direct contact with the cavity such that the interference fit established between the transition portion and the opening of the cavity provides a lone source of direct contact between the hosel and the cavity.

2 . A hosel as defined in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first channel, the second channel, or the third channel comprises a square-shaped cross section.

3 . A hosel as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first channel, the second channel, and the third channel are parallel with each other.

4 . A hosel as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first channel, the second channel, and the third channel are concentric about a longitudinal axis of the insert portion.

5 . A hosel as defined in claim 1 , wherein the neck portion and the insert portion are integrally formed.

6 . A hosel as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first channel, the second channel, and the third channel have equal widths and equal depths.

7 . A hosel as defined in claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first channel, the second channel, or the third channel has a depth of 0.010 inch and a width of 0.040 inch.

8 . A hosel comprising:

a neck portion configured to receive a golf shaft; and

an insert portion extending downward from the neck portion and configured to be received inside a cavity of a putter-type golf club head, the insert portion comprising:

a first plurality of portions spaced apart across the insert portion and having a first perimeter concentric with a longitudinal axis of the insert portion;

a second plurality of portions spaced apart across the insert portion and having a second perimeter concentric with the longitudinal axis of the insert portion; and

a lower portion diminishing in width toward a terminal end of the insert portion,

wherein the first perimeter is greater than the second perimeter,

wherein the neck portion is configured to establish an interference fit at an opening of the cavity, and

wherein the insert portion is configured to be free from direct contact with the cavity such that the interference fit established between the neck portion and the opening of the cavity provides a lone source of direct contact between the hosel and the cavity.

9 . A hosel as defined in claim 8 , wherein any two adjacent portions of the first plurality of portions are separated by one portion of the second plurality of portions.

10 . A hosel as defined in claim 8 , wherein any two adjacent portions of the second plurality of portions are separated by one portion of the first plurality of portions.

11 . A hosel as defined in claim 8 , wherein the neck portion further comprises a transition portion diminishing in width toward the insert portion.

12 . A hosel as defined in claim 8 , wherein the insert portion comprises a cross-section having a rounded rectangular shape.

13 . A hosel as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first plurality of portions are evenly or unevenly spaced apart, and wherein the second plurality of portions are evenly or unevenly spaced apart.

14 . A hosel comprising:

a neck portion configured to receive a golf shaft and comprising a transition portion that tapers in a downward direction; and

an insert portion extending downward from the transition portion and configured to be received inside a cavity of a putter-type golf club head,

wherein the insert portion alternates between a first perimeter size and a second perimeter size before tapering toward a terminal end,

wherein the transition portion is configured to establish an interference fit with an opening of the cavity,

wherein the transition portion tapers at a first angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the insert portion, and

wherein a lower portion of the insert portion tapers at a second angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the insert portion.

15 . A hosel as defined in claim 14 , wherein the insert portion comprises a cross-section having a rounded rectangular shape.

16 . A hosel as defined in claim 14 , wherein the first angle is different from the second angle.

17 . A hosel as defined in claim 14 , wherein the first angle is less than the second angle.

18 . A hosel as defined in claim 14 , wherein the insert portion is configured to be free from any direct contact with the cavity such that the interference fit established between the transition portion and the opening of the cavity provides a lone source of direct contact between the hosel and the cavity.

19 . A hosel as defined in claim 14 , wherein the hosel is made from at least one of a steel-based material, a titanium-based material, an aluminum-based material, or a tungsten-based material.

20 . A hosel as defined in claim 14 , wherein the hosel is made from a non-metal material.
