Abstract

The disclosure herein concerns a method including receiving at a computer at least one target value of a scent parameter for an environment that is remote from the computer, receiving at the computer a sensed parameter of the environment, and controlling, via the computer, diffusion of a liquid from a source of the liquid in fluid communication with at least one scent diffusion device to achieve the target value of the scent parameter, wherein controlling includes setting or adjusting an operation parameter of the at least one scent diffusion device in response to the sensed parameter.

Claims (34)

1 . A method of managing concentration of tagged scent particles, the method comprising:

setting a current rate or a diffusion rate within a diffusion device to deliver a certain level of scent concentration within an environment;

positioning a sensor within the environment, the sensor being configured to identify and determine a concentration of tagged scent particles within the environment;

measuring the concentration of tagged scent particles;

determining whether the measured concentration of the tagged scent particles is within a defined range of acceptable scent level; and

if the measured concentration of tagged scent particles is within the defined range of acceptable scent level, then continue to monitor the sensor without change to the diffusion rate, or

if the measured concentration is above the defined range of acceptable scent level, then operate the diffuser device to lower the diffusion rate while continuing to monitor the sensor, or

if the measured concentration is below the defined range of acceptable scent level, then operate the diffuser device to increase the diffusion rate while continuing to monitor the sensor.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is used to meter the environment for fragrance levels and to provide feedback to a network of diffusion devices.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the feedback enables a scent management system including the network of diffusion devices to operate in a closed loop.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the scent delivered by the diffusion device is mixed with a tracer for diffusion into the environment.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising tracking the tracer to confirm at least one of a fragrance in use, that a fragrance is reaching its intended target, and to determine a path of an individual who in the environment by detecting the tracer outside an area of the environment.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the tracer can be tracked throughout a wide area of the environment.

7 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the tracer is a perfluorocarbon tracer.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of tagged scent particles is a normalized index of scent.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of tagged scent particles includes units of scent concentration represented by parts per million (ppm).

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising producing a fragrance profile, wherein producing the fragrance profile includes a setting of fragrance diffusion of the diffusion device in the environment.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentration of tagged scent particles is measured periodically over time to ensure that the scent is within the defined range.

12 . The method of claim 1 , where the diffusion device is programmed to diffuse scents at different rates in order to provide the desired concentration of tagged scent particles.

13 . A method of using scent to neutralize a malodor in an environment, the method comprising:

setting a current rate or a diffusion rate within a diffusion device to deliver a certain level of scent concentration within an environment, the scent concentration including an additive to neutralize malodors;

tagging malodor particles within the environment;

positioning a sensor within the environment, the sensor being configured to identify and determine a concentration of tagged malodor particles within the environment;

measuring the concentration of tagged malodor particles;

determining whether the measured concentration of the tagged malodor particles is above a defined limit of acceptable scent level; and

if the measured concentration of tagged malodor particles is at or below the defined limit of acceptable malodor level, then continue to monitor the sensor without change to the diffusion rate, or

if the measured concentration is above the defined limit of acceptable malodor level, then operate the diffuser device to raise the diffusion rate while continuing to monitor the sensor.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the sensor is used to meter the environment for fragrance levels, including malodor particles, and to provide feedback to a network of diffusion devices.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the feedback enables a scent management system including the network of diffusion devices to operate in a closed loop.

16 . The method of claim 13 , the sensor includes a controller for the diffusion device.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the concentration of tagged malodor particles includes units of scent concentration represented by parts per million (ppm).

18 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising producing a scent profile to neutralize the malodor particles.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the concentration of tagged malodor particles is measured periodically over time to ensure that the scent is within a defined range.

20 . The method of claim 13 , where the diffusion device is programmed to diffuse scents at different rates in order to provide the desired concentration of tagged malodor particles.
