Abstract

The present disclosure provides a patient system and method for interfacing with and controlling an oral medication dispensing device. The system registers the dispensing device to a particular patient and records biometric data regarding the patient. Upon verifying a dose schedule and biometric authentication of the patient, the system authorizes use of the medication dispensing device and causes an activator mechanism to activate. In doing so, an activator mechanism within the dispensing device moves a medication cartridge between a stored position and a dispensing position, where it can be compressed to safely and efficiently dispense medication to the patient.

Claims (50)

1 . A patient system for interfacing with and controlling a handheld medication dispensing device, the system comprising:

one or more processors and associated memory, the memory being a non-transitory computer-readable medium having executable instructions encoded thereon, such that upon execution of the instructions, the one or more processors perform operations of:

registering a patient;

associating the handheld medication dispensing device with the patient;

storing authentication information regarding the patient; and

storing a dose schedule regarding usage of the handheld medication dispensing device by the patient, the dose schedule having parameters specifying a particular medication and associated volume and timing interval for administration;

linking with the handheld medication dispensing device, the handheld medication dispensing device having a housing with a rotatable cartridge carrier and a medication cartridge positioned within the rotatable cartridge carrier, the medication cartridge containing the particular medication;

authenticating the patient while the patient attempts to use the handheld medication dispensing device;

causing transmission of an access granted signal to the handheld medication dispensing device;

unlocking the handheld medication dispensing device after authentication of the patient and upon receipt of the access granted signal;

activating an activator mechanism in the handheld medication dispensing device to rotate the cartridge carrier and, in doing so, move a medication cartridge within the handheld medication device from a stored position to a dispensing position in which at least a portion of the medication cartridge is raised from the housing and at least partially exposed beyond the housing for actuation by the patient, thereby permitting a patient to dispense a dose from the handheld medication dispensing device within the parameters of the dose schedule;

and

monitoring patient adherence to the dose schedule and providing an alert to a doctor when the patient fails to adhere to the dose schedule.

2 . The patient system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein associating the handheld medication dispensing device with the patient includes registering the handheld medication dispensing device using a unique identifier obtained from the handheld medication dispensing device.

3 . The patient system as set forth in claim 2 , wherein the unique identifier is obtained by pairing the patient system to the medication dispensing device via Bluetooth.

4 . The patient system as set forth in claim 3 , wherein in storing authentication information regarding the patient, the authentication information is biometric data that is obtained from the medication dispensing device.

5 . The patient system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein associating the medication dispensing device with the patient includes registering the medication dispensing device using a unique identifier obtained via Bluetooth from the medication dispensing device.

6 . A non-transitory computer program product for a patient to interface with and control a handheld medication dispensing device, the computer program product comprising:

a non-transitory computer-readable medium having executable instructions encoded thereon, such that upon execution of the instructions by one or more processors, the one or more processors perform operations of:

registering a patient;

associating the handheld medication dispensing device with the patient;

storing authentication information regarding the patient; and

storing a dose schedule regarding usage of the handheld medication dispensing device by the patient, the dose schedule having parameters specifying a particular medication and associated volume and timing interval for administration;

linking with the handheld medication dispensing device, the handheld medication dispensing device having a housing with a rotatable cartridge carrier and a medication cartridge positioned within the rotatable cartridge carrier, the medication cartridge containing the particular medication;

authenticating the patient while the patient attempts to use the handheld medication dispensing device;

causing transmission of an access granted signal to the handheld medication dispensing device;

unlocking the handheld medication dispensing device after authentication of the patient and upon receipt of the access granted signal;

activating an activator mechanism in the handheld medication dispensing device to rotate the cartridge carrier and, in doing so, move a medication cartridge within the handheld medication device from a stored position to a dispensing position in which at least a portion of the medication cartridge is raised from the housing and at least partially exposed beyond the housing for actuation by the patient, thereby permitting a patient to dispense a dose from the handheld medication dispensing device within the parameters of the dose schedule;

and

monitoring patient adherence to the dose schedule and providing an alert to a doctor when the patient fails to adhere to the dose schedule.

7 . The computer program product as set forth in claim 6 , wherein associating the handheld medication dispensing device with the patient includes registering the handheld medication dispensing device using a unique identifier obtained from the handheld medication dispensing device.

8 . The computer program product as set forth in claim 7 , wherein the unique identifier is obtained by pairing the computer program product to the medication dispensing device via Bluetooth.

9 . The computer program product as set forth in claim 8 , wherein in storing authentication information regarding the patient, the authentication information is biometric data that is obtained from the medication dispensing device.

10 . The computer program product as set forth in claim 6 , wherein associating the medication dispensing device with the patient includes registering the medication dispensing device using a unique identifier obtained via Bluetooth from the medication dispensing device.

11 . A computer implemented method for a patient to interface with and control a handheld medication dispensing device, the method comprising an act of:

causing one or more processers to execute instructions encoded on a non-transitory computer-readable medium, such that upon execution, the one or more processors perform operations of:

registering a patient;

associating the handheld medication dispensing device with the patient;

storing authentication information regarding the patient; and

storing a dose schedule regarding usage of the handheld medication dispensing device by the patient, the dose schedule having parameters specifying a particular medication and associated volume and timing interval for administration;

linking with the handheld medication dispensing device, the handheld medication dispensing device having a housing with a rotatable cartridge carrier and a medication cartridge positioned within the rotatable cartridge carrier, the medication cartridge containing the particular medication;

authenticating the patient while the patient attempts to use the handheld medication dispensing device;

causing transmission of an access granted signal to the handheld medication dispensing device;

unlocking the handheld medication dispensing device after authentication of the patient and upon receipt of the access granted signal;

activating an activator mechanism in the handheld medication dispensing device to rotate the cartridge carrier and, in doing so, move a medication cartridge within the handheld medication device from a stored position to a dispensing position in which at least a portion of the medication cartridge is raised from the housing and at least partially exposed beyond the housing for actuation by the patient, thereby permitting a patient to dispense a dose from the handheld medication dispensing device within the parameters of the dose schedule;

and

monitoring patient adherence to the dose schedule and providing an alert to a doctor when the patient fails to adhere to the dose schedule.

12 . The computer implemented method as set forth in claim 11 , wherein associating the handheld medication dispensing device with the patient includes registering the handheld medication dispensing device using a unique identifier obtained from the handheld medication dispensing device.

13 . The computer implemented method as set forth in claim 12 , wherein the unique identifier is obtained by pairing the computer implemented method to the medication dispensing device via Bluetooth.

14 . The computer implemented method as set forth in claim 13 , wherein in storing authentication information regarding the patient, the authentication information is biometric data that is obtained from the medication dispensing device.
