Abstract

Claims (53)

1 . A shoe, comprising:

a sole;

an upper attached to the sole;

a heel cup extending from adjacent to the sole to at least a rear portion of a collar of the upper, the heel cup

being positioned in an interior portion of the upper,

having a central portion that is thinner than at least one adjacent region of the heel cup, and

having a smooth curvature, including an S-wave cross-section at a rearmost portion of the heel cup;

an inner compressible layer comprising foam material, the inner compressible layer

having at least partially a curved outer surface that extends into a foot-receiving opening of the shoe,

having a first thickness adjacent to a portion of the heel cup above a central inflection point,

tapering to lesser medial and lateral thicknesses at each side of the foot-receiving opening of the shoe, and

tapering to a lesser lower thickness adjacent to a portion of the heel cup below the central inflection point;

wherein the inner compressible layer is covered by an elastic textile that is form fitted to an exterior shape of the compressible layer.

2 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the elastic textile comprises a wicking textile.

3 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the elastic textile is affixed to the inner compressible layer by an adhesive.

4 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the elastic textile is affixed to the inner compressible layer by stitching.

5 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the foam material comprises polyurethane.

6 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the foam material comprises EVA.

7 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the sole comprises a midsole layer and an outsole layer wherein the midsole and outsole layers are integrally formed.

8 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the inner compressible layer is configured to extend around at least portions of the shoe corresponding to an ankle region of a foot.

9 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the inner compressible layer is configured to compress under a load during donning or removal of the shoe.

10 . The shoe of claim 9 , wherein the inner compressible layer is configured to expand fully or partially to its uncompressed state when the shoe is donned.

11 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the heel cup has a shape substantially corresponding to a heel covering.

12 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the heel cup has a profile comprising a pear-like shape.

13 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjacent region of the heel cup is displaced vertically from the central portion.

14 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjacent region of the heel cup is displaced horizontally from the central portion.

15 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjacent region of the heel cup comprises a first adjacent region above the central portion, and a second adjacent region below the central portion.

16 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjacent region of the heel cup comprises a first adjacent region medial to the central portion, and a second adjacent region lateral to the central portion.

17 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the heel cup is compressible.

18 . The shoe of claim 17 , wherein the heel cup has a first configuration in an uncompressed state,

and is configured to distort into a second configuration under load,

an upper portion of the heel cup inclining with a first angle relative to a vertical line that is normal to a horizontal surface of a floor in the first configuration, and

inclining with a second angle in the second configuration, the second angle being greater than the first angle.

19 . The shoe of claim 1 , further comprising:

a reinforcing quarter element.

20 . The shoe of claim 19 , wherein the reinforcing quarter element extends from a heel region to an instep.

21 . The shoe of claim 19 , wherein the reinforcing quarter element extends from a heel region to an eyestay.

22 . The shoe of claim 1 , wherein the inner compressible layer is adjacent to a forward-facing surface of the heel cup pointing toward a toe box of the shoe.

23 . A shoe, comprising:

a sole comprising integrally formed midsole and outsole layers;

an upper attached to the sole;

a heel cup extending from adjacent to the sole to at least a rear portion of a collar of the upper, the heel cup

being positioned in an interior portion of the upper,

having a central portion that is thinner than a first adjacent region of the heel cup above the central portion, a second adjacent region of the heel cup below the central portion, a third adjacent region of the heel cup medial to the central portion, and a fourth adjacent region of the heel cup lateral to the central portion, and

having a smooth curvature, including an S-wave cross-section at a rearmost portion of the heel cup;

an inner compressible layer comprising polyurethane foam bonded to an inner surface of the heel cup, the inner compressible layer

configured to extend around at least portions of the shoe corresponding to an ankle region of a foot,

configured to compress under a load during donning or removal of the shoe and to expand fully or partially to its uncompressed state when the shoe is donned,

having at least partially a curved outer surface that extends into a foot-receiving opening of the shoe,

having a greater first thickness adjacent to a portion of the heel cup above a central inflection point,

tapering to lesser medial and lateral thicknesses at each side of the foot-receiving opening of the shoe, and

tapering to a lesser lower thickness adjacent to a portion of the heel cup below the central inflection point;

wherein the inner compressible layer is covered by an elastic textile having wicking properties that is form fitted to an exterior shape of the compressible layer, the elastic textile being affixed to the inner compressible layer by an adhesive.
