Abstract

A computer device that manages privilege delegation is disclosed. The computing device can insert a particular command into one or more commands corresponding to a file. The computing device can intercept a request to execute the particular command on the file according to first privileges. The computing device can determine to execute the particular command on the file according to second privileges different from the first privileges based on the request to execute the particular command. The computing device can cause the particular command to be executed on the file according to the second privileges.

Claims (43)

1 . A system, comprising:

a memory configured to store an operating system; and

at least one computing device comprising processing circuitry operatively connected to the memory, the processing circuitry being configured to:

insert a particular command into a plurality of commands corresponding to a file by replacing a specific command of the plurality of commands with the particular command;

intercept a request to execute the particular command on the file according to first privileges;

obtain information related to the request to execute the particular command by obtaining a file identifier of the file from a request to create a context menu;

determine to execute the particular command on the file according to second privileges different from the first privileges based on the request to execute the particular command; and

in response to determining to execute the particular command on the file, cause the particular command to be executed on the file according to the second privileges.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to intercept the request to execute the particular command on the file by intercepting the request to create the context menu for the file, wherein the context menu includes the plurality of commands.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of commands corresponds to a respective command to be performed on the file.

4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein each of the plurality of commands is unique in comparison to other commands in the plurality of commands.

5 . A method, comprising:

inserting, via one of one or more computing devices, a particular command into a plurality of commands corresponding to a file by replacing a specific command of the plurality of commands with the particular command;

intercepting, via one of the one or more computing devices, a request to execute the particular command on the file according to first privileges;

obtaining, via one of the one or more computing devices, information related to the request to execute the particular command by obtaining a file identifier of the file from a request to create a context menu;

determining, via one of the one or more computing devices, to execute the particular command on the file according to second privileges different from the first privileges based on the request to execute the particular command; and

in response to determining to execute the particular command on the file, causing, via one of the one or more computing devices, the particular command to be executed on the file according to the second privileges.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

launching, via one of the one or more computing devices, a proxy process with the second privileges;

executing, via the proxy process, the particular command on the file; and

terminating, via one of the one or more computing devices, the proxy process.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the particular command is a custom verb command.

8 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of commands comprises at least one static verb corresponding to a type of the file.

9 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising calling, via one of the one or more computing devices, a method to obtain a canonical name for the particular command in response to intercepting the request to execute the particular command on the file.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

determining, via one of the one or more computing devices, that a menu handler omits implementation of the canonical name for the particular command; and

in response to determining that the menu handler omits the implementation of the canonical name, perform the particular command via a specific menu handler, wherein the particular command is into the plurality of commands corresponding to the file by the specific menu handler.

11 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying a program that, when executed by at least one computing device comprising at least one hardware processor, causes the at least one hardware processor to:

insert a particular command into a plurality of commands corresponding to a file by replacing a specific command of the plurality of commands with the particular command;

intercept a request to execute the particular command on the file according to first privileges;

obtain information related to the request to execute the particular command by obtaining a file identifier of the file from a request to create a context menu;

determine to execute the particular command on the file according to second privileges different from the first privileges based on the request to execute the particular command; and

in response to determining to execute the particular command on the file, cause the particular command to be executed on the file according to the second privileges.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the particular command comprises a command string to launch the file.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to insert the particular command further by defining the particular command in a registry.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to insert the particular command further by executing a shell extension configured to dynamically add the particular command.

15 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the shell extension is configured to remove or hire at least one of the plurality of commands.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to intercept the request to execute the particular command by intercepting a creation request for a COM object.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to wrap the COM object with a wrapper object, wherein the wrapper object comprises a same interface as the COM object.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to:

transmit a policy request message comprising information related to the request to a policy server; and

receive a policy result comprising a plurality of rules from the policy server, wherein determining to execute the particular command on the file is comprises applying at least one of the plurality of rules.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein replacing the specific command with the particular command comprises replacing a verb command with a different verb command.
