Abstract

Disclosed herein are new techniques carried out by a computing system for determining delays of various components of an audio system to allow for accurate correction of these delays, which may improve the audio quality of live performances for listeners who hear audio reproduced by loudspeakers at live performance venues. In one implementation the computing system, which may comprise a transmitter device and one or more receiver devices, may be configured to perform functions, including receiving a first audio signal, receiving, via an audio input interface of the receiver, a second audio signal, and determining, based on the first audio signal and the second audio signal, an audio delay that is associated with the second audio signal. The computing system may be configured to perform further functions, including based on a determined cross-correlation between a downsampled audio signal and a filtered second audio signal, determining the audio signal delay.

Claims (60)

a microphone;

at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium; and

program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first portable computing device is configured to:

receive, from the microphone, a first audio signal associated with a first acoustic signal;

receive, from a second computing device in cooperation with the first portable computing device, a second audio signal associated with a second signal, wherein the second audio signal is not synchronized with the first audio signal, and wherein the first acoustic signal is different than the second signal;

associate a first clock with the first audio signal, wherein the first audio signal comprises a series of audible pulses at regular intervals;

synchronize the first clock based on the first audio signal;

associate a second clock with the second audio signal, wherein the second audio signal comprises a series of audible pulses at regular intervals;

synchronize the second clock based on the second audio signal;

perform an analysis of the first clock and second clock;

based on the analysis, determine a time delay between the first clock and the second clock;

apply the time delay to audio content that is to be played back by the first portable computing device, wherein the first audio signal and the second audio signal are synchronized; and

play back the audio content, in accordance with the time delay.

2 . The first portable computing device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first portable computing device is configured to:

after determining the time delay, output a representation of the determined time delay via a user interface of the first portable computing device.

3 . The first portable computing device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first portable computing device is configured to:

before determining the time delay:

receive, via a user interface of the first portable computing device, user input indicating a request to determine the time delay between the first and second audio signals, wherein the first and second audio signals are produced based on the request.

4 . The first portable computing device of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor such that the first portable computing device is configured to:

receive the first audio signal from a second computing device via a first input of an audio input interface of the first portable computing device; and

receive the second audio signal via a second input of the audio input interface of the first portable computing device.

5 . The first portable computing device of claim 1 , wherein the respective playback of the audio content is based on a respective time delay that matches the time delay corresponding to the determined time delay.

6 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a first portable computing device to:

receive a first audio signal from a microphone and a second audio signal, from a second computing device in cooperation with the first portable computing device, wherein the first audio signal is associated with a first acoustic signal and the second audio signal is associated with a second signal different than the first acoustic signal;

associate a first clock with the first audio signal;

synchronize the first clock with the first audio signal;

associate a second clock with the second audio signal;

synchronize the second clock with the second audio signal;

perform an analysis of the first clock and second clock;

based on the analysis, determine a time delay between the first clock and the second clock;

apply the time delay to audio content that is to be played back by the first portable computing device, wherein the first audio signal and the second audio signal are synchronized; and

play back the audio content, in accordance with the time delay.

7 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the first portable computing device to:

after determining the time delay, output a representation of the determined time delay via a user interface of the first portable computing device.

8 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the first portable computing device to:

before determining the time delay:

receive, via a user interface of the first portable computing device, user input indicating a request to determine the time delay between the first and second audio signals, wherein the first and second audio signals are produced based on the request.

9 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the first portable computing device to:

coordinate with the second computing device to produce at least one of the first audio signal or the second audio signal.

10 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the portable computing device to:

receive the first audio signal from the second computing device via a first input of an audio input interface of the first portable computing device; and

receive the second audio signal via a second input of the audio input interface of the first portable computing device.

11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 6 , wherein the respective playback of the audio content is based on a respective time delay that matches the time delay corresponding to the determined time delay.

12 . A method carried out by a first portable computing device, the method comprising:

receiving a first audio signal from a microphone and a second audio signal from a second computing device in cooperation with the first portable computing device, wherein the first audio signal is associated with a first acoustic signal and the second audio signal is associated with a second signal different than the first acoustic signal;
