Abstract

Systems, methods, and devices relating to determining viewership data are described herein. In a method, viewing data associated with a household is received. A first portion of the viewing data is indicative of video programming associated with a first video device and a second portion of the viewing data is indicative of video programming associated with a second video device. One or more characteristics associated with the first and second portions of the viewing data are determined. Based on the one or more characteristics and a comparison of the respective video programming associated with the first and second video devices, it is determined that the first portion of the viewing data is duplicative, at least in part, with the second portion of the viewing data.

Claims (58)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving information associated with a premises, wherein a first portion of the information is associated with video content output by a first device and a second portion of the information is associated with video content output by a second device;

determining one or more characteristics associated with both the first and second portions of the information;

determining, based on the one or more characteristics, that the first portion of the information is duplicative, at least in part, with the second portion of the information; and

excluding the duplicative information of the first portion of the information from the information.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the information with the duplicative information excluded, viewership data, wherein the viewership data comprises at least one of television ratings, viewing metrics, historic viewing activity, or projected viewing activity.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the information is determined by the first device and the second portion of the information is determined by the second device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the first device is configured to output video content to the second device and the second device is configured to display the video content output by the first device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first device comprises at least one of a cable set-top box, an over-the-top (OTT) device, a satellite television set-top box, a digital media player, a digital television adaptor, a digital video recorder (DVR), or a network device; and

the second device comprises at least one of a smart TV, a television, a computer display, an LCD display, an LED display, or a video projector.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more characteristics comprise at least one of:

a classification of the premises as one of SD dominant, HD dominant, or Ultra HD dominant;

a video quality classification of one or more of the video content output by the first device or the video content output by the second device;

an input categorization associated with at least one of the first device or the second device; or

an IP address associated with a video source of at least one of the video content output by the first device or the video content output by the second device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

comparing the video content output by the first video device and the video content output by the second video device, and wherein the determining that the first portion of the information is duplicative, at least in part, with the second portion of the information is further based on the comparing.

8 . A device comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the device to:

receive information associated with a premises, wherein a first portion of the information is associated with video content output by a first device and a second portion of the information is associated with video content output by a second device;

determine one or more characteristics associated with both the first and second portions of the information;

determine, based on the one or more characteristics, that the first portion of the information is duplicative, at least in part, with the second portion of the information; and

exclude the duplicative information of the first portion of the information from the information.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the device to:

determine, based on the information with the duplicative information excluded, viewership data, wherein the viewership data comprises at least one of television ratings, viewing metrics, historic viewing activity, or projected viewing activity.

10 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the first portion of the information is determined by the first device and the second portion of the information is determined by the second device.

11 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the device to:

determine that the first device is configured to output video content to the second device and the second device is configured to display the video content output by the first device.

12 . The device of claim 8 , wherein:

the first device comprises at least one of a cable set-top box, an over-the-top (OTT) device, a satellite television set-top box, a digital media player, a digital television adaptor, a digital video recorder (DVR), or a network device; and

the second device comprises at least one of a smart TV, a television, a computer display, an LCD display, an LED display, or a video projector.

13 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more characteristics comprise at least one of:

a classification of the premises as one of SD dominant, HD dominant, or Ultra HD dominant;

a video quality classification of one or more of the video content output by the first device or the video content output by the second device;

an input categorization associated with at least one of the first device or the second device; or

an IP address associated with a video source of at least one of the video content output by the first device or the video content output by the second device.

14 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the device comprises one of the first device or the second device.

15 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause:

receiving information associated with a premises, wherein a first portion of the information is associated with video content output by a first device and a second portion of the information is associated with video content output by a second device;

determining one or more characteristics associated with both the first and second portions of the information;

determining, based on the one or more characteristics, that the first portion of the information is duplicative, at least in part, with the second portion of the information; and

excluding the duplicative information of the first portion of the information from the information.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause:

determining, based on the information with the duplicative information excluded, viewership data, wherein the viewership data comprises at least one of television ratings, viewing metrics, historic viewing activity, or projected viewing activity.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the first portion of the information is determined by the first device and the second portion of the information is determined by the second device.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause:

determining that the first device is configured to output video content to the second device and the second device is configured to display the video content output by the first device.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the one or more characteristics comprise at least one of:

a classification of the premises as one of SD dominant, HD dominant, or Ultra HD dominant;

a video quality classification of one or more of the video content output by the first device or the video content output by the second device;

an input categorization associated with at least one of the first device or the second device; or

an IP address associated with a video source of at least one of the video content output by the first device or the video content output by the second device.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause:

comparing the video content output by the first video device and the video content output by the second video device, and wherein the determining that the first portion of the information is duplicative, at least in part, with the second portion of the information is further based on the comparing.
