Abstract

A check valve includes a valve element and a valve body having a body housing, an annular valve seat insert, a bushing, and a biasing member. The body housing includes an outer circumferential wall extending between an inlet port and an outlet port to define a valve cavity therebetween. The valve seat insert is seated in a body seat surface surrounding the inlet port. The bushing is disposed in the valve cavity and defines a central bore, with the bushing including an outboard end surface axially engageable with the valve seat insert. The biasing member is disposed between a bearing portion of the body housing and an inboard end of the bushing to allow for axial movement of the bushing with respect to the body seat surface. The valve element extends through the bushing central bore and is movable between a closed position and an open position.

Claims (26)

1 . A check valve comprising:

a valve body including:

a body housing including an outer circumferential wall extending axially inward from an inlet port to an outlet port to define a valve cavity therebetween;

an annular gasket seal seated in a body seat surface of the body housing surrounding the inlet port; and

a bushing disposed in the valve cavity and defining a central bore, the bushing including an outward end surface in axial engagement with the gasket seal; and

a valve element extending through the bushing central bore and movable between a closed position in which the valve element seals against the gasket seal to prevent flow between the inlet port and the outlet port, and an open position in which fluid flow is permitted from the inlet port to the outlet port;

wherein the body seat surface includes a radially inward facing tapered rear seating surface and an axially inward extending first side surface, and the bushing outward end surface defines a second side surface, such that the body seat surface and the bushing outward end surface together define an annular seal cavity sized to retain the gasket seal, with the first and second side surfaces defining an inner peripheral gap opposite the tapered rear seating surface and exposing an inner peripheral sealing portion of the gasket seal.

2 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the tapered rear seating surface extends at an angle of about 25° to about 45° with respect to a central axis of the valve.

3 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the first and second side surfaces form an included angle of about 40° to about 90°.

4 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the body seat surface includes an inner radial rear seating surface radially inward of the tapered rear seating surface, opposite the second side surface.

5 . The check valve of claim 4 , wherein the inner radial rear seating surface extends at a first angle and the second side surface extends at a second angle within about 5° of the first angle.

6 . The check valve of claim 4 , wherein the inner radial rear seating surface is a radially extending surface.

7 . The check valve of claim 4 , wherein the inner radial rear seating surface is a radially outward facing tapered surface.

8 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the valve element includes a tapered outer peripheral sealing surface that seals against the gasket seal when the valve element is in the closed position.

9 . The check valve of claim 8 , wherein the tapered rear seating surface extends at a first angle, and the tapered outer peripheral sealing surface extends at a second angle within about 5° of the first angle.

10 . The check valve of claim 8 , wherein the bushing further comprises a tapered flow guide surface opposite the outward end surface and extending at an angle within about 5° of an angle of the tapered outer peripheral sealing surface of the valve element.

11 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the first side surface is an axially extending surface.

12 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the first side surface is a radially outward facing tapered surface.

13 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the body seat surface comprises an axially inward extending annular inner wall portion defining the first side surface.

14 . The check valve of claim 13 , wherein the annular inner wall portion is sized to abut the valve element in the closed position to limit compression of the gasket seal by the valve element to a predetermined fraction of a nominal gasket seal cross-section.

15 . The check valve of claim 14 , wherein the predetermined fraction of the nominal gasket seal cross-section is between about 5% and about 40%.

16 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the inner peripheral gap has a width of about 72% to about 80% of a nominal cross-section of the gasket seal.

17 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the bushing further comprises at least one outer peripheral recess extending to the outboard end surface to intersect the annular seal cavity, with the at least one outer peripheral recess including a vent passage intersecting the bushing central bore.

18 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the valve element comprises a poppet having an outboard head portion defining a tapered outer peripheral sealing surface and an inboard tail portion defining an internal flow passage.

19 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the bushing is axially movable with respect to the body seat surface for controlled compression of the gasket seal.

20 . The check valve of claim 1 , wherein the body housing comprises a first body housing member including a tubular portion defining the outer circumferential wall and the valve cavity, and a second body housing member comprising an end screw threadably assembled with an female threaded end of the first body housing member, wherein the body seat surface is defined by the first body housing member.
