Abstract

A method of operating a surgical assembly is disclosed. The method includes receiving a first input from a first RFID scanner indicative of a first information stored in a first RFID chip of a first modular component of the surgical assembly, receiving a second input from a second RFID scanner indicative of a second information stored in a second RFID chip of a second modular component of the surgical assembly, determining an operational parameter of a motor of the surgical assembly based on the first input and the second input, and causing the motor to effect a tissue treatment motion of the first modular component.

Claims (22)

1 . A surgical instrument, comprising:

a stapling head assembly comprising a distal surface and operable to drive an array of staples through the distal surface;

an anvil couplable with the stapling head assembly, wherein the anvil is translatable relative to the stapling head assembly toward a closed configuration to capture tissue therebetween;

an RFID system, comprising:

an RFID scanner; and

an RFID tag to store information about the anvil, wherein the RFID tag is configured to transmit an RF signal indicative of the information to the RFID scanner in the closed configuration; and

a control circuit coupled to the RFID scanner to monitor RF signal backscatter from the tissue and to determine a characteristic of the tissue based on RF signal backscatter from the tissue.

2 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic is tissue thickness.

3 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic is a boundary feature within the tissue.

4 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein an amount of RF signal backscatter from the tissue is based at least in part on a position of the RFID tag relative to a position of the RFID scanner.

5 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the RFID tag is disposed on a shank in mechanical communication with the anvil, and the RFID scanner is disposed on the stapling head assembly.

6 . The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the RFID scanner is disposed on an outer surface of a cylindrical inner core member that extends distally within a tubular casing of the stapling head assembly.

7 . The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein a distance between the RFID tag and the RFID scanner is at or below an attachment threshold distance in the closed configuration.

8 . A control circuit for determining a characteristic of a tissue captured in a surgical instrument comprising a stapling head assembly, an anvil couplable with the stapling head assembly, and an RFID system comprising an RFID scanner and an RFID tag, the control circuit comprising:

a processor and a memory to store instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

cause the RFID scanner to emit an RF signal towards the RFID tag;

receive data from the RFID scanner corresponding to RF signal backscatter from the tissue; and

determine the characteristic of the tissue from the data from the RFID scanner.

9 . The control circuit of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to correlate the data from the RFID scanner with known tissue characteristics.

10 . The control circuit of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to analyze spectral characteristics of the data from the RFID scanner.

11 . The control circuit of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to determine a thickness of the tissue captured by the anvil and the stapling head assembly.

12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to identify a boundary feature within the tissue.
