Abstract

An iron-type golf club head includes a striking face comprising a face center and a variable face thickness such that the striking face has a perimeter region proximate an outer boundary of the striking face and a maximum thickness of the striking face located in the perimeter region. A shell of the golf club head includes a crown, a sole opposite the crown, a heel, a toe, and an internal weight pad located on a lower portion of the shell. A moment of inertia about a vertical axis through the center of gravity of the golf club head is at least 2900 g*cm 2 . In another aspect, the striking face includes a center region having a first thickness T 1 , an intermediate region surrounding the center region having a second thickness T 2 , and a perimeter region surrounding the intermediate region having a third thickness T 3 , and T 2 <T 1 <T 3.

Claims (31)

1 . A hollow iron-type golf club head that, when oriented in a reference position, comprises:

a striking face comprising a face center and a variable face thickness such that the striking face has a perimeter region proximate an outer boundary of the striking face and a maximum thickness of the striking face is located in the perimeter region;

a shell including a crown, a sole opposite the crown, a heel, a toe, and an internal weight pad located on a lower portion of the shell;

a loft angle LA of at least 20 degrees; and

a center of gravity, wherein a moment of inertia about a vertical axis through the center of gravity of the golf club head is at least 2900 g*cm 2 ; and

wherein the internal weight pad is located substantially toe-ward of the golf club head center of gravity.

2 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the internal weight pad is entirely spaced apart from the striking face.

3 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a channel extending in a heel-to-toe direction of the golf club head, the channel separating the internal weight pad from the striking face.

4 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 3 , wherein the channel includes a width between 2 mm and 4 mm.

5 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a rear portion opposite the striking face, wherein the internal weight pad includes a varying thickness in a direction from the striking face to the rear portion.

6 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the internal weight pad and the shell comprise a unitary investment casted component.

7 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the center of gravity of the golf club head is a first center of gravity and the internal weight pad includes a second center of gravity for only the mass of the internal weight pad, the second center of gravity being located toe-ward of the first center of gravity.

8 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein a moment of inertia about a horizontal axis substantially parallel to the striking face through the center of gravity of the golf club head is at least 900 g*cm 2 .

9 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the striking face comprises a center region having a first thickness T 1 , an intermediate region surrounding the center region having a second thickness T 2 , and a perimeter region surrounding the intermediate region having a third thickness T 3 , and wherein T 2 <T 1 <T 3 .

10 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the center of gravity includes a center of gravity depth D, the center of gravity depth satisfying the equation:

19 mm−0.36 mm/degrees*LA<D<22 mm−0.36 mm/degrees*LA.

11 . The hollow iron-type golf club head of claim 1 , further comprising a weight port disposed in a portion of the shell and configured to receive a removable weight.

12 . An iron type golf club head that, when oriented in a reference position, comprises:

a striking face comprising a face center and a variable face thickness with a center region having a first thickness T 1 , an intermediate region surrounding the center region having a second thickness T 2 , and a perimeter region surrounding the intermediate region having a third thickness T 3 , and wherein T 2 <T 1 <T 3 ;

a shell including a crown, a sole opposite the crown, a heel, a toe, and a weight pad located on a lower portion of the shell;

a loft angle LA of at least 20 degrees; and

a center of gravity, wherein a moment of inertia about a vertical axis through the center of gravity is at least 2900 g*cm 2 ; and

wherein the weight pad is located substantially toe-ward of the golf club head center of gravity.

13 . The iron type golf club head of claim 12 , wherein the weight pad is entirely spaced apart from the striking face.

14 . The iron type golf club head of claim 12 , further comprising a channel extending in a heel-to-toe direction, wherein the channel is disposed between the striking face and the weight pad.

15 . The iron type golf club head of claim 14 , wherein the channel includes a width between 2 mm and 4 mm.

16 . The iron type golf club head of claim 12 , further comprising a rear portion opposite the striking face, wherein the weight pad includes a varying thickness in a direction from the striking face to the rear portion.

17 . The iron type golf club head of claim 12 , wherein a moment of inertia about a horizontal axis substantially parallel to the striking face through the center of gravity of the golf club head is at least 900 g*cm 2 .

18 . The iron type golf club head of claim 12 , wherein the center of gravity includes a center of gravity depth D, the center of gravity depth satisfying the equation:

19 mm−0.36 mm/degrees*LA<D<22 mm−0.36 mm/degrees*LA.
