Abstract

A tool measurement apparatus for a machine tool includes a transmitter portion including a light source for generating a light beam and a receiver portion including a detector for detecting the light beam, the light beam being passed from the light source to the detector along an optical path. At least one of the receiver portion and the transmitter portion includes a protection device including a gas expulsion aperture configured to expel a bleed gas supplied from an external gas source. The optical path also passes through the gas expulsion aperture. The protection device further includes a check valve located in the optical path. The bleed gas is supplied to the gas expulsion aperture through the check valve and the flow of the bleed gas through the check valve causes the check valve to adopt an open configuration defining a passageway through which the light beam can pass.

Claims (17)

1 . A tool measurement apparatus for a machine tool,

the tool measurement apparatus comprising a transmitter portion including a light source for generating a light beam and a receiver portion including a detector for detecting the light beam, the light beam being passed from the light source to the detector along an optical path, and

at least one of the receiver portion and the transmitter portion comprising a protection device including a gas expulsion aperture configured to expel a bleed gas supplied from an external gas source, the optical path also passing through the gas expulsion aperture,

wherein the protection device further comprises a check valve located in the optical path, the bleed gas is supplied to the gas expulsion aperture through the check valve, and the flow of the bleed gas through the check valve causes the check valve to adopt an open configuration defining a passageway through which the light beam can pass.

2 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the check valve of the protection device adopts a closed configuration when no bleed gas is being supplied to the gas expulsion aperture, the closed configuration substantially preventing the ingress of fluid or debris from the machine tool environment.

3 . The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the check valve substantially blocks the passage of the light beam along the optical path when in the closed configuration.

4 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the check valve comprises a duckbill valve having a plurality of flexible lips.

5 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the gas expulsion aperture of the protection device comprises a conduit that is obliquely angled with respect to the optical path such that the expelled bleed gas is directed away from the optical path.

6 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the transmitter portion and the receiver portion are arranged in a break-beam configuration in which the optical path passes from the light source to the detector through a region of free space into which a tool can be placed to obscure the light beam.

7 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein each of the transmitter portion and the receiver portion include the protection device.

8 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the transmitter portion and the receiver portion comprise an optical aperture for defining a dimension of the light beam, the optical aperture being provided upstream of the protection device.

9 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , where at least one of the transmitter portion and the receiver portion further comprise a shutter assembly moveable between an open position and a closed position, the shutter assembly being provided upstream of the protection device.

10 . The apparatus according to claim 9 when at least one of the transmitter portion and the receiver portion comprise the optical aperture for defining the dimension of the light beam, wherein the optical aperture is located between the shutter assembly and the protection device.

11 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the transmitter portion and the receiver portion comprise a baffle external to the gas expulsion aperture of the protection device, the baffle being arranged to protect the gas expulsion aperture from the ingress of fluid or debris without obstructing the optical path.

12 . The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the bleed gas expelled from the gas expulsion aperture is directed away from the baffle.

13 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a removable cap portion incorporates the protection device, the removeable cap portion being attachable to the body of at least one of the transmitter portion and the receiver portion.

14 . A machine tool in combination with a tool measurement apparatus according to claim 1 .
