Abstract

A material penetrating tool includes a shaft portion defining a central axis, and an enlarged cutting portion extending downwardly axially from the shaft portion. The enlarged cutting portion includes a rearward blunt surface, a front cutting surface, a first side surface and a second side surface, and the first side surface and the second side surface define an angle of extension measured in a plane perpendicular to the central axis, forming a wider forward cutting surface than the rearward blunt surface in a plane perpendicular to the central axis.

Claims (38)

1 . A material penetrating tool for use with a ground working machine, the material penetrating tool comprising:

a shaft portion including a cylindrical configuration and defining a central axis, a circumferential direction, and a radial direction; and

an enlarged cutting portion extending downwardly axially from the shaft portion;

wherein the enlarged cutting portion includes a rearward blunt surface, a front working region, a first side surface, and a second side surface,

wherein the first side surface and the second side surface define an angle of extension measured in a first plane perpendicular to the central axis, forming a wider forward cutting surface than the rearward blunt surface in a second plane perpendicular to the central axis,

wherein the front working region includes a first facet and a second facet, the second facet forming a first included obtuse angle with the first facet projected along the central axis and onto a third plane perpendicular to the central axis,

wherein the front working region further includes a third facet forming a first external obtuse angle with the second facet projected along the central axis onto a fourth plane perpendicular to the central axis, and

wherein the rearward blunt surface forms a right angle with a fourth fifth plane perpendicular to the central axis.

2 . The material penetrating tool of claim 1 , wherein the first included obtuse angle is an included obtuse angle ranging from 150 to 180 degrees.

3 . The material penetrating tool of claim 2 , wherein the first external obtuse angle ranges from 150 to 180 degrees.

4 . The material penetrating tool of claim 1 , wherein the front working region further comprises a fourth facet forming a second included angle with the third facet projected along the central axis onto a sixth plane perpendicular to the central axis ranging from 150 to 180 degrees.

5 . The material penetrating tool of claim 1 , wherein the first side surface or the second side surface is drafted such that the enlarged cutting portion narrows along the central axis as the enlarged cutting portion extends axially away from the shaft portion.

6 . The material penetrating tool of claim 1 , wherein the first side surface forms a first draft angle with the central axis ranging from 0 to 40 degrees, the second side surface forms a second draft angle with the central axis ranging from 0 to 40 degrees, and the front working region forms a third draft angle with the central axis ranging from 0 to 30 degrees.

7 . The material penetrating tool of claim 1 , further comprising a notch configured to receive an insert.

8 . The material penetrating tool of claim 7 , wherein the front working region, the first side surface, and the second side surface at least partially border the notch.

9 . A penetrating bit for use with a ground working machine, the penetrating bit comprising:

an attachment portion defining a longitudinal axis; and

an enlarged penetrating portion extending downwardly axially from the attachment portion that is wider than the attachment portion;

wherein the enlarged penetrating portion includes a back face, a front penetrating surface, a first side region, and a second side region,

wherein the first side region or the second side region includes a first flat undrafted surface parallel to the longitudinal axis and a first flat drafted surface configured to reduce drag of the penetrating bit,

wherein the first flat undrafted surface and the first flat drafted surface are adjacent along a direction that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and

wherein the first flat drafted surface forms a first included obtuse angle with the back face projected along the longitudinal axis onto a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

10 . The penetrating bit of claim 9 , wherein the first flat drafted surface extends downwardly longitudinally past the first flat undrafted surface and the enlarged penetrating portion includes a second flat undrafted surface extending downwardly longitudinally from the first flat drafted surface.

11 . The penetrating bit of claim 10 , wherein the first flat drafted surface and the second flat undrafted surface border an aperture.

12 . The penetrating bit of claim 9 , wherein the first side region and the second side region define an angle of extension measured in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, forming a wider front penetrating surface than the back face in the plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

13 . The penetrating bit of claim 12 , wherein the front penetrating surface includes a first facet and a second facet forming a first included angle with the first facet projected along the longitudinal axis onto a second plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis ranging from 150 to 180 degrees.

14 . The penetrating bit of claim 9 , wherein the attachment portion includes a cylindrical configuration defining a circumferential direction and a radial direction and the back face forms a right angle with the radial direction in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

15 . The penetrating bit of claim 14 , wherein the back face forms a first draft angle with the longitudinal axis measured in a plane containing the radial direction and the longitudinal axis ranging from 0 to 40 degrees, the first flat drafted surface forms a second draft angle with the longitudinal axis ranging from 0 to 40 degrees, and the front penetrating surface forms a third draft angle with the longitudinal axis ranging from 0 to 30 degrees.

16 . The penetrating bit of claim 9 , further comprising a notch configured to receive an insert.

17 . The penetrating bit of claim 16 , wherein the penetrating surface, the first side region, and the second side region at least partially border the notch.

18 . A penetrating bit for use with a ground working machine, the penetrating bit comprising:

an attachment portion defining a longitudinal axis; and

a penetrating portion extending downwardly axially from the attachment portion that is wider than the attachment portion;

wherein the penetrating portion includes a back face, a first side region, a second side region, a front penetrating surface separating the first side region and the second side region, and a notch configured to receive an insert,

wherein the first side region or the second side region includes a first undrafted surface that is parallel to the longitudinal axis and adjacent to a first drafted surface parallel to the longitudinal axis, and

wherein both the first undrafted surface and the first drafted surface border the notch.

19 . The penetrating bit of claim 18 , further comprising the insert, wherein the insert is attached to the notch and includes a first side surface, a second side surface, a top surface, a bottom surface, a rear surface, and a front faceted portion including a first facet and a second facet forming an obtuse angle with the first facet on the top surface, the front faceted portion having a perimeter defined by the first side surface, the second side surface, the top surface, and the bottom surface.
