Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods for detecting an overloaded vehicle and/or detecting when a load of a vehicle has shifted. In one form, the present disclosure provides a system comprising a memory and at least one processor. The at least one processor is configured to: receive lateral movement information associated with a first turn and a second turn; determine whether a load of the trailer has shifted based on the lateral movement information associated with the first turn, the lateral movement information associated with the second turn, data characterizing the first turn, and data characterizing the second turn; and upon a determination that the load of the trailer has shifted, at least one of store information associated with the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted or transmit a message with information associated with the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted.

receive lateral movement information associated with a second turn from the at least one lateral accelerometer of the trailer, wherein one of the first turn or the second turn is a left-hand turn, and the other of the first turn or the second turn is a right-hand turn;

determine data charactering the second turn based on GPS data of the vehicle during the second turn, where the data characterizing the second turn comprises a degree of curvature of the second turn and a degree of incline of the second turn;

determine whether a load of the trailer has shifted based on a comparison of the lateral movement information associated with the first turn and the lateral movement information associated with the second turn and based on the data characterizing the first turn and the data characterizing the second turn; and

upon a determination that the load of the trailer has shifted:

at least one of store information associated with the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted in the memory or transmit a message with information associated with the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted; and

automatically adjust at least one of a vehicle operation or a driver assistance system of the vehicle based on the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive axle pressure information associated with the first turn from at least one pressure sensor positioned on an axle of the trailer; and

receive axle pressure information associated with the second turn from the at least one pressure sensor positioned on the axle of the trailer;

wherein the at least one processor is configured to determine whether the load of the trailer has shifted additionally based on the axle pressure information associated with the first turn and the axle pressure information associated with the second turn.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to transmit the message with information associated with the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted to a display of the vehicle.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein to automatically adjust at least one of a vehicle operation or a driver assistance system of the vehicle based on the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted, the at least one processor is configured to:

adjust an amount of time before a braking action that vehicle systems alert a driver to an upcoming braking action.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein to automatically adjust at least one of a vehicle operation or a driver assistance system of the vehicle based on the determination that the load of the trailer has shifted, the at least one processor is configured to:

increase a distance before initiation of a braking action that vehicle systems alert a driver to an upcoming braking action.

9 . A method comprising:

receiving, with at least one processor, lateral movement information associated with a first turn from at least one lateral accelerometer of a trailer of a vehicle;
