Abstract

An application in a computing environment is monitored by configuring an instance of a first application function in the computing environment; configuring an instance of an application function monitor in the computing environment; and activating the application function monitor response to an activation of the first application function. The instance of the first application function and the instance of the application function monitor operate independently of one another when activated, and the application function monitor, when activated, monitors one or more of: a continued functioning of the activated first application function; and an output produced by the activated first application function.

Claims (73)

1 . A method of monitoring functionality of an application in a computing environment, the method comprising:

configuring an instance of a first application function in the computing environment;

configuring an instance of an application function monitor in the computing environment; and

activating the application function monitor in response to an activation of the first application function,

wherein the instance of the first application function and the instance of the application function monitor operate independently of one another when activated, and

wherein the application function monitor, when activated, monitors one or more of:

a continued functioning of the activated first application function; and

an output produced by the activated first application function,

wherein:

the computing environment is a distributed environment comprising a first client and a second client that communicate with one another via a messaging system; and

the first application function and application function monitor are activated in the first client of the computing environment.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first application function is use of a resource that is provided in the computing environment.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the resource is a sensor.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the messaging system is a message broker.

5 . The method of claim 1 , comprising:

the application function monitor periodically monitoring receipt of a heartbeat signal from the messaging system, wherein the heartbeat signal indicates the continued functioning of the activated first application function.

6 . The method of claim 5 , comprising:

the application function monitor starting a watchdog timer;

the application function monitor restarting the watchdog timer in response to a receipt of the heartbeat signal from the messaging system; and

the application function monitor activating a first error handling procedure in response to a timeout being indicated by the watchdog timer.

7 . The method of claim 6 , comprising:

associating an importance level with the first application function; and

setting a timeout value of the watchdog timer in dependence on the importance level of the first application function.

8 . The method of claim 1 , comprising:

the first application function communicating data to a second application function via the messaging system, wherein the second application function is activated in the second client; and

the application function monitor receiving the communicated data from the messaging system.

9 . The method of claim 8 , comprising:

the application function monitor detecting when the received data differs from predefined acceptable data, and activating a second error handling procedure in response to said detecting.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first application function is a sensor function.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing environment is a distributed computing environment, and wherein the first client is associated with a first node of the distributed computing environment, and the second client is associated with a second node of the distributed computing environment.

12 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to carry out a method of monitoring functionality of an application in a computing environment, wherein the method comprises:

configuring an instance of a first application function in the computing environment;

configuring an instance of an application function monitor in the computing environment; and

activating the application function monitor in response to an activation of the first application function,

wherein the instance of the first application function and the instance of the application function monitor operate independently of one another when activated, and

wherein the application function monitor, when activated, monitors one or more of:

a continued functioning of the activated first application function; and

an output produced by the activated first application function,

wherein:

the computing environment is a distributed environment comprising a first client and a second client that communicate with one another via a messaging system; and

the first application function and application function monitor are activated in the first client of the computing environment.

13 . An apparatus for monitoring functionality of an application in a computing environment, the apparatus comprising:

circuitry configured to configure an instance of a first application function in the computing environment;

circuitry configured to configure an instance of an application function monitor in the computing environment; and

circuitry configured to activate the application function monitor in response to an activation of the first application function,

wherein the instance of the first application function and the instance of the application function monitor operate independently of one another when activated, and

wherein the application function monitor, when activated, monitors one or more of:

a continued functioning of the activated first application function; and

an output produced by the activated first application function

wherein:

the computing environment is a distributed environment comprising a first client and a second client that communicate with one another via a messaging system; and

the first application function and application function monitor are activated in the first client of the computing environment.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the first application function is use of a resource that is provided in the computing environment.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the resource is a sensor.

16 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the messaging system is a message broker.

17 . The apparatus of claim 13 , comprising:

the application function monitor configured to periodically monitor receipt of a heartbeat signal from the messaging system, wherein the heartbeat signal indicates the continued functioning of the activated first application function.

18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , comprising:

the application function monitor configured to:

start a watchdog timer;

restart the watchdog timer in response to a receipt of the heartbeat signal from the messaging system; and

activate a first error handling procedure in response to a timeout being indicated by the watchdog timer.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , further configured to:

associate an importance level with the first application function,

and wherein the application function monitor is configured to set a timeout value of the watchdog timer in dependence on the importance level of the first application function.

20 . The apparatus of claim 13 , comprising:

the first application function configured to:

communicate data to a second application function via the messaging system, wherein the second application function is activated in the second client; and

receive the communicated data from the messaging system.

21 . The apparatus of claim 20 , comprising:

the application function monitor configured to detect when the received data differs from predefined acceptable data, and activate a second error handling procedure in response to said detection.

22 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the first application function is a sensor function.

23 .
