Abstract

A medical system includes a catheter and a vision probe that can be removed from the catheter and replaced with a medical probe. The vision probe can thus be used to steer and pose the catheter, and then be removed and replaced with the medical probe when a medical task such as a lung biopsy is performed. A sensor system in the catheter at least partly measures a pose of the catheter, and control logic controls actuation of the catheter to maintain the desired working configuration when the medical probe is used. A small diameter catheter can thus provide vision and biopsy functionality.

Claims (41)

1 . A robotic system, comprising:

computer readable media having stored thereon executable instructions;

a computing device in communication with the computer readable media and configured to execute the instructions to cause the robotic system to:

determine a first pose of a distal tip of a flexible elongate instrument while the distal tip is in a first working configuration;

store parameters of the first working configuration;

subsequent to a movement of the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument away from the first working configuration to a second pose, determine a third pose of a second working configuration of the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument based at least in part on the stored parameters of the first working configuration, the second working configuration being different than the first working configuration; and

generate at least one control signal to guide the distal tip to the second working configuration; and

a drive interface configured to, based on the at least one control signal, move the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument from the second pose to the third pose.

2 . The robotic system of claim 1 , further comprising the flexible elongate instrument, the flexible elongate instrument comprising:

a proximal section;

a distal section, the distal section comprising the distal tip; and

at least one pull wire.

3 . The robotic system of claim 2 , wherein the drive interface is connected to a robotic manipulator assembly and the robotic manipulator assembly and the drive interface are configured to navigate the distal section of the flexible elongate instrument through a body lumen to target tissue.

4 . The robotic system of claim 2 , wherein the drive interface is connected to the at least one pull wire at the proximal section of the flexible elongate instrument and is configured to adjust a tensioning of the at least one pull wire based on the at least one control signal to facilitate moving the distal tip from the second pose to the third pose.

5 . The robotic system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one sensor, wherein determining the first pose of the distal tip is based at least in part on a sensor signal from the at least one sensor.

6 . The robotic system of claim 5 , wherein the computing device is configured to execute the instructions to cause the robotic system to:

determine, based on the sensor signal from the at least one sensor, the second pose of the distal tip subsequent to the movement of the distal tip away from the first working configuration.

7 . The robotic system of claim 5 , further comprising an electromagnetic field generator, wherein the at least one sensor comprises a set of one or more electromagnetic sensors in a distal section of the flexible elongate instrument.

8 . The robotic system of claim 5 , wherein the at least one sensor comprises one or more shape sensors.

9 . The robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the stored parameters of the first working configuration include a line extending between a target tissue and the distal tip in the first working configuration, and wherein the third pose includes a position along the line.

10 . The robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the stored parameters of the first working configuration include an orientation and a first position of the distal tip in the first pose, and wherein the third pose includes the orientation and a second position of the distal tip.

11 . The robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the stored parameters of the first working configuration include a first position and a first orientation of the distal tip facing a target tissue from the first position, and wherein the third pose includes a second position and a second orientation of the distal tip facing the target tissue from the second position.

12 . The robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to execute the instructions to cause the robotic system to identify a type of probe configured to be deployed through the flexible elongate instrument.

13 . The robotic system of claim 12 , wherein the third pose is determined further based on the identified type of probe.

14 . The robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the third pose is determined further based on a planned task to be performed using the flexible elongate instrument.

15 . A method of controlling a flexible elongate instrument, comprising:

determining a first pose of a distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument while the distal tip is in a first working configuration;

storing parameters of the first working configuration;

subsequent to a movement of the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument away from the first working configuration to a second pose, determining a third pose of a second working configuration of the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument based at least in part on the stored parameters of the first working configuration, the second working configuration being different than the first working configuration;

generating at least one control signal to guide the distal tip to the second working configuration; and

based on the at least one control signal, moving the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument from the second pose to the third pose.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the stored parameters of the first working configuration include a line extending between a target tissue and the distal tip in the first working configuration, and wherein the third pose includes a position along the line.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the stored parameters of the first working configuration include an orientation and a first position of the distal tip in the first working configuration, and wherein the third pose includes the orientation and a second position of the distal tip.

18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the stored parameters of the first working configuration include a first position and a first orientation of the distal tip facing a target tissue from the first position, and wherein the third pose includes a second position and a second orientation of the distal tip facing the target tissue from the second position.

19 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising identifying a type of probe configured to be deployed through the flexible elongate instrument, wherein the third pose is determined further based on the identified type of probe.

20 . A non-transient computer readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that, when executed, cause at least one computing device to:

determine a first pose of a distal tip of a flexible elongate instrument while the distal tip is in a first working configuration;

store parameters of the first working configuration;

subsequent to a movement of the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument away from the first working configuration to a second pose, determine a third pose of a second working configuration of the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument based at least in part on the stored parameters of the first working configuration, the second working configuration being different than the first working configuration;

generate at least one control signal to guide the distal tip to the second working configuration; and

based on the at least one control signal, move the distal tip of the flexible elongate instrument from the second pose to the third pose.
