Abstract

The disclosed technology is directed to providing an embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) solution in a wireless telecommunication network. An example method for provisioning a wireless device with an eSIM profile for operation on a network includes scanning a single static QR code to retrieve network addresses for multiple profile management servers, accessing one or more of the multiple profile management servers to identify an appropriate eSIM profile that can be used by the wireless device, retrieving the identified eSIM profile from the respective profile management server, and transmitting the retrieved eSIM profile to the wireless device. The described methods, systems, and devices advantageously enables different vendors and/or platforms to provide each of the multiple profile management servers while maintaining the existing eSIM provisioning process, and obviates the need for a root discovery service.

Claims (53)

1 . A method for providing an embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) solution in a wireless telecommunication network, the method comprising:

receiving a first information corresponding to a mobile device operating in the wireless telecommunication network and a second information associated with a plurality of profile management servers,

wherein the second information is embedded in a single quick response (QR) code and is configured to be retrieved by scanning the single QR code, and

wherein the single QR code is a static QR code;

determining, based on the second information, a network address for each of the plurality of profile management servers,

wherein each of the plurality of profile management servers stores one or more eSIM profiles, and

wherein each eSIM profile is configured to authenticate a corresponding mobile device for use in the wireless telecommunication network;

sequentially accessing, based on the determining, the plurality of profile management servers to identify an eSIM profile that is available for use by the mobile device,

wherein identifying the eSIM profile is based on the first information;

receiving, from the respective profile management server, the identified eSIM profile; and

transmitting, to the mobile device, the identified eSIM profile.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second information comprises a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for each of the plurality of profile management servers, and wherein the second information is formatted as comma separated values (CSV).

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more eSIM profiles are stored in an encrypted form, and wherein the sequentially accessing the plurality of profile management servers comprises:

accessing, by a Local Profile Assistant (LPA), the one or more eSIM profiles on the respective profile management server.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the identified eSIM profile is transmitted to the mobile device without using a Root Discovery Service (DS).

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless telecommunication network is a Fifth Generation (5G) network, and wherein each of the plurality of profile management servers is a Subscription Manager-Data Preparation+ (SM-DP+) server.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a number of the one or more eSIM profiles stored on each of the plurality of profile management servers is based on a number of mobile devices being served by each base station or each network operator in a coverage area.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first information comprises at least one of an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) identifier, an operating band of the mobile device, or a hardware configuration of the mobile device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the identified eSIM profile comprises two or more eSIM profiles that can be used by the mobile device.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the single QR code is scanned by a user of the mobile device or a customer service representative.

10 . A system operated by a wireless service provider for providing an embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) solution in a wireless telecommunication network, the system comprising:

a plurality of profile management servers,

wherein each of the plurality of profile management servers stores one or more eSIM profiles, and wherein each eSIM profile is configured to authenticate a corresponding mobile device for use in the wireless telecommunication network, and

wherein a number of the one or more eSIM profiles stored on each of the plurality of profile management servers is based on a number of mobile devices being served by each base station or each network operator in a coverage area; and

a network server that comprises a hardware processor and a non-transitory memory storing instructions, which, when executed by the hardware processor, cause the system to:

receive a first information corresponding to a mobile device and a second information associated with the plurality of profile management servers,

wherein the second information is embedded in a single quick response (QR) code and is configured to be retrieved by scanning the single QR code,

determine, based on the second information, a network address for each of the plurality of profile management servers,

sequentially access, based on the determining, the plurality of profile management servers to identify an eSIM profile that is available for use by the mobile device,

wherein identifying the eSIM profile is based on the first information,

receive, from the respective profile management server, the identified eSIM profile, and

transmit, to the mobile device, the identified eSIM profile.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the single QR code is a static QR code.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the wireless telecommunication network is a Fifth Generation (5G) network, wherein each of the plurality of profile management servers is a Subscription Manager-Data Preparation+ (SM-DP+) server, and wherein the first information comprises at least one of an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) identifier, an operating band of the mobile device, or a hardware configuration of the mobile device.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the identified eSIM is transmitted to the mobile device without a Root Discovery Service (DS) being available.

14 . At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions, which, when executed by at least one data processor of a computer device, cause the computer device to:

receive a first information corresponding to a mobile device operating in the wireless telecommunication network and a second information associated with a plurality of profile management servers,

wherein the second information is embedded in a single quick response (QR) code and is configured to be retrieved by scanning the single QR code, and

wherein the single QR code is a static QR code;

determine, based on the second information, a network address for each of the plurality of profile management servers,

wherein each of the plurality of profile management servers stores one or more embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) profiles, and

wherein each eSIM profile is configured to authenticate a corresponding mobile device for use in the wireless telecommunication network;

sequentially access, based on the determining, the plurality of profile management servers to identify an eSIM profile that is available for use by the mobile device,

wherein identifying the eSIM profile is based on the first information;

receive, from the respective profile management server, the identified eSIM profile; and

transmit, to the mobile device, the identified eSIM profile.

15 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the second information comprises a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for each of the plurality of profile management servers, and wherein the second information is formatted as comma separated values (CSV).

16 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the one or more eSIM profiles are stored in an encrypted form, and wherein the sequentially accessing the plurality of profile management servers comprises:

accessing, by a Local Profile Assistant (LPA), the one or more eSIM profiles on the respective profile management server.

17 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the identified eSIM profile is transmitted to the mobile device without using a Root Discovery Service (DS).
