Abstract

A portable shelter includes a frame structure with a plurality of pole structures. In some embodiments, a pole structure includes telescopically movable pole portions and a spring-biasing mechanism configured to bias one pole portion away from the other. In some embodiments, a center hub structure of the portable shelter includes a locking mechanism for engaging one of the pole portions to interfere with telescopic movement of the pole structure. In some embodiments, a pole structure includes a flexible portion attached to a first rigid portion, and a second rigid portion that is movable relative to the first rigid portion. The second rigid portion is pivotable or telescopically movable between a first position in which the second rigid portion overlaps the first rigid portion such that the flexible portion is free to flex, and a second position in which the second rigid portion overlaps and restrains the flexible portion.

Claims (36)

1 . A shelter comprising a frame structure, the frame structure comprising a plurality of pole structures, wherein each pole structure of the plurality of pole structures comprises:

a first rigid portion;

a flexible shaft attached to the first rigid portion; and

a second rigid portion that is movable relative to the first rigid portion between a first position in which the second rigid portion overlaps the first rigid portion such that the flexible shaft is free to flex, and a second position in which the second rigid portion overlaps the flexible shaft and restrains the flexible shaft;

wherein the second rigid portion does not overlap the flexible shaft along an entire length of the flexible shaft when the second rigid portion is in the second position.

2 . The shelter of claim 1 , wherein the second rigid portion is telescopically movable relative to the first rigid portion between the first position and the second position.

3 . The shelter of claim 1 , wherein the second rigid portion is pivotably movable relative to the first rigid portion between the first position and the second position.

4 . The shelter of claim 1 , further comprising a hub structure, wherein each pole structure of the plurality of pole structures comprises connection elements for connecting each pole structure to the hub structure.

5 . The shelter of claim 4 , wherein the connection elements comprise one or more balls, and wherein the hub structure comprises sockets for receiving the connection elements.

6 . The shelter of claim 4 , wherein the connection elements comprise one or more disks, and wherein the hub structure comprises sockets for receiving the connection elements.

7 . The shelter of claim 1 , wherein each pole structure comprises a locking mechanism configured to selectively prevent relative movement between the first rigid portion and the second rigid portion.

8 . The shelter of claim 1 , wherein the flexible shaft is attached to the first rigid portion with a sleeve device, wherein the sleeve device holds the flexible shaft and the first rigid portion holds the sleeve device.

9 . A shelter comprising a frame structure, the frame structure comprising two pole structures and a hub structure, wherein the hub structure interconnects the two pole structures, and wherein each pole structure comprises:

a first rigid portion extending along an axis;

a flexible shaft extending along the axis, wherein a first end of the flexible shaft is attached to the first rigid portion;

a connection element directly mounted to a second end of the flexible shaft distal from the first end of the flexible shaft, wherein the connection element is configured to connect the second end of the flexible shaft to the hub structure, wherein when the connection element is connected to the hub structure, the connection element and the flexible shaft together are pivotable or rotatable relative to the hub structure; and

a second rigid portion that is movable relative to the first rigid portion between a first position in which the flexible shaft is free to flex relative to the axis, and a second position in which the second rigid portion restrains the flexible shaft;

wherein the connection element is positioned entirely outside of the second rigid portion when the second rigid portion is in the second position.

10 . The shelter of claim 9 , wherein the second rigid portion is telescopically movable relative to the first rigid portion between the first position and the second position.

11 . The shelter of claim 9 , wherein the second rigid portion is pivotably movable relative to the first rigid portion between the first position and the second position.

12 . The shelter of claim 9 , wherein the connection element is positionable inside a portion of the hub structure.

13 . A shelter comprising a frame structure, wherein:

(a) the frame structure comprises a roof portion;

(b) the roof portion comprises a pole structure;

(c) the pole structure extends between a first end of the pole structure and a second end of the pole structure;

(d) the pole structure comprises (i) a first pole portion extending along an axis from the first end of the pole structure and (ii) a flexible shaft connected to the first pole portion and extending from the first pole portion toward the second end of the pole structure;

(e) the pole structure is configurable to a first configuration in which the pole structure has a first length along the axis between the first end of the pole structure and the second end of the pole structure;

(f) the pole structure is configurable to a second configuration in which the pole structure has a second length along the axis between the first end of the pole structure and the second end of the pole structure, wherein the second length is less than the first length;

(g) when the pole structure is in the second configuration, at least part of the flexible shaft diverges away from the axis; and

(h) the pole structure further comprises a second pole portion, wherein the second pole portion is movable relative to the first pole portion and the flexible shaft between (i) a first position in which the second pole portion limits at least one of flexure of the flexible shaft or divergence of the flexible shaft away from the axis and (ii) a second position different from the first position.

14 . The shelter of claim 13 , wherein the second pole portion is telescopically movable relative to the first pole portion between the first position and the second position.

15 . The shelter of claim 13 , wherein the second pole portion is pivotably movable relative to the first pole portion between the first position and the second position.

16 . The shelter of claim 15 , wherein the second pole portion overlaps the flexible shaft when the second pole portion is in the first position.

17 . The shelter of claim 13 , wherein the flexible shaft extends along a majority of the first length when the pole structure is in the first configuration.

18 . The shelter of claim 13 , wherein the roof portion comprises a hub structure and an additional pole structure, and wherein the hub structure connects the pole structure and the additional pole structure.

19 . The shelter of claim 13 , wherein the pole structure comprises a locking mechanism positionable to selectively prevent relative movement between the first pole portion and the second pole portion.
