Abstract

A solar sail includes a bus and a plurality of separate movable vanes coupled to the bus. Each movable vane includes a reflective surface for generating solar radiation pressure and propel the solar sail in space. Each vane may be movable relative to the bus in a fully deployed configuration such that an amount of thrust generated by solar radiation pressure on each vane is controllable.

Claims (26)

1 . A solar sail, comprising:

a bus; and

a plurality of separate vanes movably coupled to the bus, each of the plurality of separate vanes including:

a reflective surface for using solar radiation pressure to propel the solar sail in space,

a support frame to support the reflective surface, wherein the support frame includes a stowed configuration and a deployed configuration,

wherein each of the of the plurality of separate vanes is movably coupled to the bus, wherein each connection between the bus and a vane of the plurality of separate vanes has a first rotational degree of freedom about a connection axis between the bus and the vane and an axis of symmetry of the vane, and a second rotational degree of freedom orthogonal to the first rotational degree of freedom in a fully deployed configuration.

2 . The solar sail of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of separate vanes are movable relative to the bus in a fully deployed configuration such that an amount of thrust generated by solar radiation pressure on each vane is controllable.

3 . The solar sail of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of separate vanes, when fully deployed, have a use configuration in which each of the plurality of separate vanes are generally parallel.

4 . The solar sail of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of separate vanes in the use configuration are contained in approximately the same plane.

5 . The solar sail of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of separate vanes, in a fully deployed configuration, includes a first position and a second position rotationally orthogonal to the first position.

6 . The solar sail of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator for each of the plurality of separate vanes having one rotational degree of freedom.

7 . The solar sail of claim 1 , wherein the axis of rotation is through a center of symmetry of the vane and traverses the bus and the vane.

8 . The solar sail of claim 6 , further comprising a control system in which at least two of the plurality of separate vanes are controlled simultaneously and move the same rotational displacement for any actuation.

9 . The solar sail of claim 1 , further comprising one or more actuators for each of the plurality of separate vanes to define two degrees rotational of freedom between each of the plurality of separate vanes and the bus.

10 . The solar sail of claim 9 , wherein a first rotational axis is through the bus and center of symmetry of a vane and a second rotational axis is orthogonal to the first rotational axis.

11 . The solar sail of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of separate vanes comprises at least a first vane and a second vane and the first vane is-coupled to the bus by a third vane and the second vane is coupled to the bus by a fourth vane.

12 . A Method of controlling a solar sail, comprising:

providing a solar sail in a stowed configuration, the solar sail having a bus and a plurality of vanes movably coupled to the bus, each of the plurality of separate vanes defining a reflective surface for using solar radiation pressure to propel the solar sail in space, and a support frame to support the reflective surface; wherein the support frame includes a stowed configuration and a deployed configuration, wherein each of the plurality of separate vanes is movably coupled to the bus, wherein each connection between the bus and a vane of the plurality of separate vanes has a first rotational degree of freedom about a connection axis between the bus and the vane and an axis of symmetry of the vane, and a second rotational degree of freedom orthogonal to the first rotational degree of freedom in a fully deployed configuration;

launching the solar sail into space to an orbit about a planet;

deploying the solar sail in space to a deployed configuration;

positioning the plurality of vanes in a first position in which each of the plurality of vanes are generally parallel during a first portion of the orbit about the planet;

rotating the plurality of vanes to a second position generally orthogonal to the first position during a second portion of the orbit about the planet.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the rotating the plurality of solar vanes is rotating each vane about a rotational degree of freedom with an axis through an axis of symmetry of the vane.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first position is configured such that the plurality of vanes are positioned normal to the Sun's light such that each of the reflective surfaces of the plurality of vanes are used for propulsion by solar radiation.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the second position is configured such that the plurality of vanes are positioned parallel with the Sun's light such that each of the reflective surfaces of the plurality of vanes are out of use for propulsion by solar radiation.

16 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising: transitioning from the stowed configuration to the deployed configuration through an automatic shape change of the plurality of vanes.
