Abstract

A golf system includes a striking area; a target area including a plurality of physical targets positioned at different locations relative to the striking area; and at least one sensing device for sensing one or more parameters regarding the travel of a physical golf ball. A processor is configured to: access a database including golf hole data, the golf hole data defining relative positions of a tee-off location and a pin location for a virtual golf hole; based on the one or more parameters regarding the travel of the physical golf ball struck from the striking area, update a virtual location of a virtual golf ball on the virtual golf hole; and generate signals to provide an indication of which of the plurality of physical targets represents a direction of the pin location based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball and the locations of the physical targets.

Claims (37)

1 . A golf system comprising:

a plurality of striking areas, each striking area being associated with a set of targets corresponding to a particular distance range from the associated striking area, the plurality of striking areas including a first striking area corresponding to a first target set, and a second striking area corresponding to a second target set, wherein the first target set is positioned to receive a physical golf ball struck from the first striking area without travelling over the second target set;

at least one sensing device for sensing one or more parameters regarding the travel of a physical golf ball struck from the respective striking areas; and

at least one processor configured to:

access a database including golf hole data, the golf hole data defining relative positions of a tee-off location and a pin location for a virtual golf hole;

based on the one or more parameters regarding the travel of the physical golf ball struck from the respective striking areas, update a virtual location of a virtual golf ball on the virtual golf hole;

generate signals to provide an indication of which of the plurality of striking areas or corresponding set of targets a next shot is to be struck from or struck to based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball relative to the pin location for the virtual golf hole; and

generate signals to provide an indication of a portion of the indicated striking area from which the next shot is to be struck based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball relative to the pin location for the virtual golf hole.

2 . The golf system of claim 1 , wherein the set of targets associated with at least one of the plurality of striking areas includes one target.

3 . The golf system of claim 1 , wherein the set of targets associated with at least one of the striking areas includes a plurality of targets.

4 . The golf system of claim 1 , comprising a display associated with at least one of the striking areas, the display configured for representing the virtual golf hole showing at least one target visualizing the virtual hole with at least one target indicator.

5 . The golf system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of striking areas includes a plurality of striking locations, the plurality of striking locations including striking locations having different physical ground features corresponding to different golf ball lies.

6 . The golf system of claim 1 , wherein the first target set includes one or more targets positioned for tee shots; and wherein the second target set includes one or more targets positioned for putting.

7 . The golf system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of striking areas includes a third striking area from which approach shots and/or chip or pitch shots are struck.

8 . The golf system of claim 1 , wherein the first target set or the second target set is positioned to receive the physical golf ball struck from at least two striking areas.

9 . The golf system of claim 1 , comprising a target area including the set of targets associated with at least one of the plurality of striking areas, the at least one target area including golf features.

10 . The golf system of claim 9 , comprising one or more devices for illuminating or highlighting a portion of the target area.

A method of operating a golf facility, the golf facility including a plurality of striking areas, each striking area being associated with a set of targets corresponding to a particular distance range from the associated striking area, the plurality of striking areas including a first striking area corresponding to a first target set, and a second striking area corresponding to a second target set, wherein the first target set is positioned to receive a physical golf ball struck from the first striking area without travelling over the second target set, the method comprising:

receiving, with at least one processor and from at least one sensing device, one or more parameters regarding the travel of a physical golf ball struck from one of the plurality of striking areas;

associating, by the at least one processor, the parameters defining the travel of the struck golf ball with a player profile, the player profile corresponding to a ball location data defining a virtual location of a virtual golf ball on a virtual golf hole;

based on the one or more parameters regarding the travel of the physical golf ball struck from the respective striking areas and golf hole data defining relative positions of a tee-off location and a pin location for a virtual golf hole, updating the ball location data to define an updated virtual location of the virtual golf ball on the virtual golf hole;

generating signals to provide an indication of which of the plurality of striking areas or corresponding set of targets a next shot is to be struck from or struck to based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball relative to the pin location for the virtual golf hole; and

generating signals to provide an indication of a portion of the indicated striking area from which the next shot is to be struck based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball relative to the pin location for the virtual golf hole.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the set of targets associated with at least one of the plurality of striking areas includes one target.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the set of targets associated with at least one of the striking areas includes a plurality of targets.

14 . The method of claim 11 , comprising: displaying on a display associated with at least one of the plurality of striking areas a representation of the virtual golf hole showing at least one target visualizing the virtual hole with at least one target indicator.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of striking areas includes a plurality of striking locations, the plurality of striking locations including striking locations having different physical ground features corresponding to different golf ball lies.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first target set includes one or more targets positioned for tee shots; and wherein the second target set includes one or more targets positioned for putting.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of striking areas includes a third striking area from which approach shots and/or chip or pitch shots are struck.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first target set or the second target set is positioned to receive the physical golf ball struck from at least two striking areas.

19 . The method of claim 11 , comprising controlling one or more devices to illuminate or highlight a portion of a target area in which the first target set or the second target set is situated.

20 . A non-transitory, computer-readable medium or media of a golf facility having stored thereon computer-readable instructions, the golf facility including a plurality of striking areas, each striking area being associated with a set of targets corresponding to a particular distance range from the associated striking area, the plurality of striking areas including a first striking area corresponding to a first target set, and a second striking area corresponding to a second target set, wherein the first target set is positioned to receive a physical golf ball struck from the first striking area without travelling over the second target set, the computer-readable instructions, when executed, configure at least one processor for:

receiving, with at least one processor and from at least one sensing device, one or more parameters regarding the travel of a physical golf ball struck from one of the plurality of striking areas;

associating, by the at least one processor, the parameters defining the travel of the struck golf ball with a player profile, the player profile corresponding to a ball location data defining a virtual location of a virtual golf ball on a virtual golf hole;

based on the one or more parameters regarding the travel of the physical golf ball struck from the respective striking areas and golf hole data defining relative positions of a tee-off location and a pin location for a virtual golf hole, updating the ball location data to define an updated virtual location of the virtual golf ball on the virtual golf hole;

generating signals to provide an indication of which of the plurality of striking areas or corresponding set of targets a next shot is to be struck from or struck to based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball relative to the pin location for the virtual golf hole; and

generating signals to provide an indication of a portion of the indicated striking area from which the next shot is to be struck based on the virtual location of the virtual golf ball relative to the pin location for the virtual golf hole.
