Abstract

A handheld acoustic imaging tool and method of imaging acoustic signals includes receiving acoustic signals from a scene, identifying a subset of the acoustic signals based on a predetermined condition of an acoustic parameter of the acoustic signals, and generating a display image using electromagnetic image data representative of electromagnetic radiation from the scene. The display image visually indicates a location in the scene corresponding to the subset of the acoustic signals. Generating the display image may further include using acoustic image data representative of the subset of the acoustic signals, wherein the electromagnetic image data and the acoustic image data are shown together in the display image. In some cases, the acoustic image data in the display image may be palettized according to the acoustic parameter, for example according to an amount, an amount of change, or a rate of change, of the acoustic parameter.

Claims (36)

1 . A method for imaging acoustic signals, comprising:

receiving acoustic signals from a scene;

identifying a subset of the acoustic signals based on a predetermined condition of an acoustic parameter of the acoustic signals; and

generating a display image using electromagnetic image data representative of electromagnetic radiation from the scene, wherein the display image visually indicates a location in the scene corresponding to the subset of the acoustic signals.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the display image further includes using acoustic image data representative of the subset of the acoustic signals, the electromagnetic image data and the acoustic image data being shown together in the display image.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising palletizing the acoustic image data in the display image according to the acoustic parameter.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the acoustic image data is palletized according to at least one of an amount, an amount of change, or a rate of change, of the acoustic parameter.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic parameter is determined based on user input.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined condition is determined based on user input.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an updated predetermined condition based on user input;

identifying an updated subset of the acoustic signals based on the updated predetermined condition; and

updating the display image to visually indicate a location in the scene corresponding to the updated subset of the acoustic signals.

8 . A handheld acoustic imaging tool, comprising:

an acoustic sensor array comprising a plurality of acoustic sensor elements configured to receive acoustic signals from a scene;

an electromagnetic imaging tool configured to receive electromagnetic radiation from the scene; and

a processor configured to:

identify a subset of the acoustic signals based on a predetermined condition of an acoustic parameter of the acoustic signals; and

generate a display image that includes electromagnetic image data representative of the electromagnetic radiation, wherein the display image visually indicates a location in the scene corresponding to the subset of the acoustic signals.

9 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to generate acoustic image data representative of the subset of the acoustic signals and include the acoustic image data with the electromagnetic image data in the display image.

10 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the acoustic parameter is a frequency or frequency range of the acoustic signals.

11 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the acoustic parameter is an intensity or intensity range of the acoustic signals.

12 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the acoustic parameter is a periodicity of occurrence, or a range of periodicity of occurrence, of the acoustic signals.

13 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the acoustic parameter is a proximity, or a range of proximity, of the acoustic signals at the location in the scene.

14 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the predetermined condition is based on at least one of an amount, an amount of change, or a rate of change, of the acoustic parameter.

15 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the predetermined condition is a difference between the acoustic parameter of the acoustic signals and the acoustic parameter in a baseline profile of the scene.

16 . The handheld acoustic imaging tool of claim 8 , wherein the display image is a real-time video representation of the scene, and the processor is configured to generate image frames of the video representation that include acoustic image data based on a currently-identified subset of the acoustic signals and electromagnetic image data based on current electromagnetic radiation from the scene, and the image frames of the video representation visually indicate the location in the scene corresponding to the currently-identified subset of the acoustic signals.

17 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing executable instructions that cause a computing system to:

receive acoustic signals from a scene;

identify a subset of the acoustic signals based on a predetermined condition of an acoustic parameter of the acoustic signals; and

generate a display image using electromagnetic image data representative of electromagnetic radiation from the scene, wherein the display image visually indicates a location in the scene corresponding to the subset of the acoustic signals.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the executable instructions further cause the computing system to generate the display image using acoustic image data representative of the subset of the acoustic signals, wherein the acoustic image data is shown in the display image with the electromagnetic image data.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the executable instructions further cause the computing system to iterate through a plurality of predetermined conditions, and for each predetermined condition, the executable instructions cause the computing system to:

identify a respective subset of the acoustic signals based on the predetermined condition; and

generate the display image using electromagnetic image data representative of electromagnetic radiation from the scene and visually indicate in the display image a location in the scene corresponding to the respective subset of the acoustic signals.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the subset of acoustic signals corresponds to multiple locations in the scene, and the executable instructions further cause the computing system to generate multiple display images, each display image of the multiple display images using electromagnetic image data representative of electromagnetic radiation from the scene and visually indicating in the display image a respective location in the scene corresponding to the subset of the acoustic signals.
