Abstract

Systems and methods presented herein provide for cutting in a borehole or casing. A cutting device can include a first arm having a cutting blade, wherein the cutting blade has side cutting teeth and an axis of rotation that is substantially at a right angle with respect to an axis of the tool body. The cutting device can also include a second arm with a bumper. The first and second arms articulate away from the elongate body in different directions to reduce vibrations while cutting. A control device can automate the cut based on hydraulic pressure measurements. Additionally, the cutting device can also be extended or rotated on a rotary index. The cutting device can rotate around a J slot, in an example.

Claims (31)

1 . A method of controlling a downhole cutting tool having an elongate tool body, comprising:

inserting the elongate tool body into a borehole;

extending an arm from the elongate tool body, the arm comprising a cutting blade having teeth extending in a direction of an axis of rotation of the cutting blade;

receiving measurements of hydraulic pressure from a pressure sensor at the downhole cutting tool, the measurements indicating a cutting force exerted by the arm from the elongate tool body;

running a hydraulic pump to control the hydraulic pressure to a target cutting pressure of the teeth against a casing disposed in the borehole; and

in response to the measurements of the hydraulic pressure being constant for a period of time, verifying a cut into the casing by the teeth is complete.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retracting an anchor of the downhole cutting tool;

actuating a linear actuator of the downhole cutting tool to move the anchor to a new location;

setting the anchor at the new location; and

running the hydraulic pump to perform a second cut.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring linear displacement as part of determining blade progress of the downhole cutting tool;

measuring current to the hydraulic pump; and

verifying the cut is complete by determining the current is changing less than a threshold amount for the period of time and determining that the linear displacement has substantially stopped.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring a blade torque of the downhole cutting tool; and

adjusting a radial arm force and rotations per minute of the cutting blade based on the blade torque.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a blade wear for the downhole cutting tool based on arm force and rotations per minute measurements, wherein a graphical user interface alerts a user of a need to replace the cutting blade.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein determining the blade wear includes determining that a period of time before repeating a stage of running the hydraulic pump has exceeded a time threshold.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising training a machine learning model based on measurements of arm force and rotations per minute, wherein the machine learning model is used to determine how much current to supply to the hydraulic pump.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the downhole cutting tool further comprises a rotary indexing tool including a slotted piece configured to swivel over a mail piece having tracks, the tracks configured for rotation of the rotary indexing tool; and

the method further comprises cutting a plurality of slots into the casing, each slot of the plurality of slots disposed at substantially a same depth in the casing.

9 . A non-transitory, computer-readable medium containing instructions for controlling a downhole cutting tool, the instructions causing a processor to execute stages comprising:

inserting an elongate tool body of the downhole cutting tool into a borehole;

extending an arm from the elongate tool body, the arm comprising a cutting blade having teeth extending in a direction of an axis of rotation of the cutting blade;

receiving measurements of hydraulic pressure from a pressure sensor at the downhole cutting tool, the measurements indicating a cutting force exerted by the arm from the elongate tool body;

running a hydraulic pump to control the hydraulic pressure to a target cutting pressure of the teeth against a casing disposed in the borehole; and

in response to the measurements of the hydraulic pressure being constant for a period of time, verifying a cut into the casing by the teeth is complete.

10 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the instructions further cause the processor to cut a plurality of slots into the casing via a rotary indexing tool, each slot of the plurality of slots disposed at substantially a same depth in the casing, wherein the rotary indexing tool comprises a slotted piece configured to swivel over a mail piece having tracks.
