Abstract

In a method and supporting system for intelligent buffering of large scale videos, a video presentation includes a plurality of sub-videos, each associated with a field of view. During presentation of the large scale video, sub-videos within a user's field of view are loaded and presented to the user, and sub-videos in proximate fields of view are loaded for potential presentation. On identifying a change in the user's field of view to one of the proximate fields of view, sub-videos are loaded for presentation within the new field of view. In a method and supporting system for seamless transitions in large scale videos, a video having a plurality of sub-videos is provided for presentation to a user, and distraction levels based on video content and user interactions are tracked. A transition point for the video is identified based on one or both distraction levels, and a sub-video is changed to a different sub-video at the transition point.

Claims (48)

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, via a user device, a video for presentation to a user, the video including a first plurality of sub-videos;

identifying a first visual area of the video corresponding to a field of view of the user, the first visual area having an outer perimeter defining a region of the video that is to be presented to the user;

displaying a first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the user, the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos within the first visual area of the video;

identifying a second visual area of the video, the second visual area having an outer perimeter defining a region surrounding the first visual area that is not displayed to the user, wherein the second visual area is non-overlapping with the first visual area that is displayed;

simultaneously loading, while displaying the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the user, a second portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, the second portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos associated with the second visual area of the video;

detecting a change in the field of view of the user from the first visual area to a third visual area within the second visual area; and

transitioning from displaying the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to displaying a third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the user, the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including loaded sub-videos of the second portion of the first plurality of sub-videos within the third visual area of the video.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

simultaneously loading, while displaying the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, a fourth portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, the fourth portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos associated with a fourth visual area of the video surrounding the third visual area and outside the field of view of the user.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the video is structured as a video tree comprising a plurality of branches, each branch representing a path in the video tree and comprising a plurality of nodes each having at least one associated video track.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the first plurality of sub-videos correspond to a first video track associated with a first node of the plurality of nodes.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the first node includes a second video track synchronized in parallel to a common timeline with the first video track, the second video track including a second plurality of sub-videos.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first video track corresponds to a first video perspective and the second video track corresponds to a second video perspective, the second video perspective being different than the first video perspective.

7 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

simultaneously loading, while displaying the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, a first portion and a second portion of the second plurality of sub-videos, the first portion of the second plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos within the first visual area of the video and the second portion of the second plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos within the second visual area of the video; and

simultaneously loading, while displaying the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, a third portion of the second plurality of sub-videos, the third portion of the second plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos within the third visual area of the video.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

identifying a transition point for transitioning from the first video track to the second video track;

in response to the transition point occurring during presentation of the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, transitioning from the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the first portion of the second plurality of sub-videos; and

in response to the transition point occurring during presentation of the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, transitioning from the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the third portion of the second plurality of sub-videos.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein identifying the transition point includes identifying one of a user interaction indicating a transition or an automatic transition point.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein identifying the transition point includes detecting a change in the field of view of the user from the third visual area to a fourth visual area outside of the second visual area.

11 . A system comprising:

at least one memory storing computer-executable instructions; and

at least one processor for executing the instructions stored on the memory, wherein execution of the instructions programs the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving, via a user device, a video for presentation to a user, the video including a first plurality of sub-videos;

identifying a first visual area of the video corresponding to a field of view of the user, the first visual area having an outer perimeter defining a region of the video that is to be presented to the user;

displaying a first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the user, the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos within the first visual area of the video;

identifying a second visual area of the video, the second visual area having an outer perimeter defining a region surrounding the first visual area that is not displayed to the user, wherein the second visual area is non-overlapping with the first visual area that is displayed;

simultaneously loading, while displaying the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the user, a second portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, the second portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos associated with the second visual area of the video;

detecting a change in the field of view of the user from the first visual area to a third visual area within the second visual area; and

transitioning from displaying the first portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to displaying a third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos to the user, the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including loaded sub-videos of the second portion of the first plurality of sub-videos within the third visual area of the video.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein execution of the instructions programs the at least one processor to perform operations further comprising:

simultaneously loading, while displaying the third portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, a fourth portion of the first plurality of sub-videos, the fourth portion of the first plurality of sub-videos including sub-videos in a fourth visual area of the video surrounding the third visual area and outside the field of view of the user.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the video is structured as a video tree comprising a plurality of branches, each branch representing a path in the video tree and comprising a plurality of nodes each having at least one associated video track.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the first plurality of sub-videos correspond to a first video track associated with a first node of the plurality of nodes.
