Orthopedic bone screw
The present disclosure describes a bone screw for use in orthopedic procedures. The bone screw includes a shank portion having a helical thread and a head portion also having a helical thread. The shank also includes a first purchase zone having a first thread pitch configured for purchase in cancellous bone and a second purchase zone having a second thread pitch configured for purchase in cortical bone, the first purchase zone extending proximally from the distal end of the screw, and the second purchase zone extending proximally from an interface with the first purchase zone; wherein the first thread pitch and the second thread pitch are compression neutral.
1 . A screw for orthopedic surgery at an anatomical target site in a human patient, the screw having a proximal end and a distal end, the screw comprising:
a head having a proximal end comprising the proximal end of the screw, a shank having a distal end comprising the distal end of the screw, and a neck extending between the head and the shank, wherein the head, neck and shank are colinear along a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end of the head and a distal end of the shank;
the head including:
a proximal base at the proximal end of the head, the proximal base comprising an upper surface of the head that is transverse to the longitudinal axis, a distal base at a distal end of the head, and a curved lateral surface extending between the proximal base and the distal base;
at least one helical thread extending from the proximal base of the head to the distal base of the head and having a diameter that defines a major diameter of the head, the helical thread configured to contact a bone forming part of the anatomical target site when the head is implanted during use to thereby enhance the purchase of the head into the bone, the at least one helical thread having at least one pitch;
a drive feature dimensioned to cooperate with an instrument such that the head, shank, and neck may be rotated about the longitudinal axis in order to drive the shank, neck and head into an anatomical target of a patient; and
the shank including:
a curved lateral surface having at least one helical thread extending from a proximal end of the shank towards the distal end of the shank, the at least one helical thread including at least two purchase zones, the at least two purchase zones comprising a first purchase zone comprising a cancellous pitched zone having a first thread pitch configured for purchase in cancellous bone and a second purchase zone comprising a cortical pitched zone having a second thread pitch configured for purchase in cortical bone, the cancellous pitched zone extending proximally from the distal end of the screw, and the cortical pitched zone extending proximally from an interface with the cancellous pitched zone;
wherein the first thread pitch and the second thread pitch are compression neutral; and
wherein the thread pitch of the helical thread of the head is the same as the thread pitch of the helical thread of the shank in the first purchase zone.
2 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 1 , wherein the pitch of the at least one helical thread of the first purchase zone is in the range of 0.5 mm to 5 mm.
3 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 2 , wherein the pitch of the at least one helical thread of the second purchase zone is half the pitch of the at least one helical thread of the first purchase zone.
4 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 2 , wherein the pitch of the at least one helical thread of the first purchase zone is 1.5 mm.
5 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 4 , wherein the pitch of the at least one helical thread of the second purchase zone is 0.75 mm.
6 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 1 , wherein the second purchase zone extends between the interface with the first purchase zone and the neck.
7 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 1 , wherein the first purchase zone and second purchase zone each has a length dimension within the range of 10 mm to 30 mm.
8 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 1 , wherein the first purchase zone and second purchase zone may each comprise between 10% and 60% of the total length of the screw.
9 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 1 , wherein the pitch of the at least one helical thread of the head is in the range of 0.5 mm to 5 mm.
10 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 1 , wherein the head further comprises at least one rounded surface at an intersection between the helical thread and the upper surface.
11 . A screw for orthopedic surgery at an anatomical target site in a human patient, the screw having a proximal end and a distal end, the screw comprising:
a head having a proximal end comprising the proximal end of the screw, a shank having a distal end comprising the distal end of the screw, and a neck extending between the head and the shank, wherein the head, neck and shank are colinear along a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end of the head and a distal end of the shank;
the head including:
a proximal base at the proximal end of the head, the proximal base comprising an upper surface of the head that is transverse to the longitudinal axis, a distal base at a distal end of the head, and a curved lateral surface extending between the proximal base and the distal base;
at least one helical thread extending from the proximal base of the head to the distal base of the head and having a diameter that defines a major diameter of the head, the helical thread configured to contact a bone forming part of the anatomical target site when the head is implanted during use to thereby enhance the purchase of the head into the bone, the at least one helical thread having at least one pitch;
a drive feature dimensioned to cooperate with an instrument such that the head, shank, and neck may be rotated about the longitudinal axis in order to drive the shank, neck and head into an anatomical target of a patient; and
the shank including:
a curved lateral surface having at least one helical thread extending from a proximal end of the shank towards the distal end of the shank, the at least one helical thread including at least two purchase zones, the at least two purchase zones comprising a first purchase zone comprising a cancellous pitched zone having a first thread pitch configured for purchase in cancellous bone and a second purchase zone comprising a cortical pitched zone having a second thread pitch configured for purchase in cortical bone, the cancellous pitched zone extending proximally from the distal end of the screw, and the cortical pitched zone extending proximally from an interface with the cancellous pitched zone;
wherein the first thread pitch and the second thread pitch are compression neutral;
wherein the head comprises a beveled surface extending from the proximal base of the head to a predetermined location along the curved lateral surface, wherein the beveled surface is angled relative to the upper surface of the head to define a bevel angle dimensioned such that the beveled surface may be positioned along and flush with an exterior surface of a bone forming part of the anatomical target site when the head is implanted during use to thereby reduce or eliminate a degree to which the head will extend beyond the exterior surface of the bone when the head is implanted at an angle relative to the bone; and
wherein the beveled surface comprises a first beveled surface, and the head further comprises a second beveled surface extending from the proximal base of the head to a predetermined location along the curved lateral surface of the head, wherein the second beveled surface is angled relative to an upper surface of the head that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and the first beveled surface to define a second bevel angle.
12 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 11 , wherein the second bevel angle of the head is in the range of between 1 and 30 degrees.
13 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 11 , wherein the bevel angle of the head is in the range of between 1 and 60 degrees.
14 . The screw for orthopedic surgery of claim 11 , wherein the head further comprises at least one rounded surface at an intersection between the helical thread and the beveled surface.
15 . A screw for orthopedic surgery at an anatomical target site in a human patient, the screw having a proximal end and a distal end, the screw comprising:
a head having a proximal end comprising the proximal end of the screw, a shank having a distal end comprising the distal end of the screw, and a neck extending between the head and the shank, wherein the head, neck and shank are colinear along a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end of the head and a distal end of the shank;
the head including:
a proximal base at the proximal end of the head, the proximal base comprising an upper surface of the head that is transverse to the longitudinal axis, a distal base at a distal end of the head, and a curved lateral surface extending between the proximal base and the distal base;
at least one helical thread extending from the proximal base of the head to the distal base of the head and having a diameter that defines a major diameter of the head, the helical thread configured to contact a bone forming part of the anatomical target site when the head is implanted during use to thereby enhance the purchase of the head into the bone, the at least one helical thread having at least one pitch;
a drive feature dimensioned to cooperate with an instrument such that the head, shank, and neck may be rotated about the longitudinal axis in order to drive the shank, neck and head into an anatomical target of a patient; and
the shank including:
a curved lateral surface having at least one helical thread extending from a proximal end of the shank towards the distal end of the shank, the at least one helical thread including at least two purchase zones, the at least two purchase zones comprising a first purchase zone comprising a cancellous pitched zone having a first thread pitch configured for purchase in cancellous bone and a second purchase zone comprising a cortical pitched zone having a second thread pitch configured for purchase in cortical bone, the cancellous pitched zone extending proximally from the distal end of the screw, and the cortical pitched zone extending proximally from an interface with the cancellous pitched zone;
wherein the first thread pitch and the second thread pitch are compression neutral;
wherein the helical thread of the shank further comprises a third purchase zone extending distally between the neck and an interface with the second purchase zone, the third purchase zone configured for purchase in cancellous bone; and
wherein the third purchase zone and the first purchase zone have the same thread pitch.
16 . A screw for orthopedic surgery at an anatomical target site in a human patient, the screw having a proximal end and a distal end, the screw comprising:
a head having a proximal end comprising the proximal end of the screw, a shank having a distal end comprising the distal end of the screw, and a neck extending between the head and the shank, wherein the head, neck and shank are colinear along a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end of the head and a distal end of the shank;
the head including:
a proximal base at the proximal end of the head, the proximal base comprising an upper surface of the head that is transverse to the longitudinal axis, a distal base at a distal end of the head, and a curved lateral surface extending between the proximal base and the distal base;
at least one helical thread extending from the proximal base of the head to the distal base of the head and having a diameter that defines a major diameter of the head, the helical thread configured to contact a bone forming part of the anatomical target site when the head is implanted during use to thereby enhance the purchase of the head into the bone, the at least one helical thread having at least one pitch;
a drive feature dimensioned to cooperate with an instrument such that the head, shank, and neck may be rotated about the longitudinal axis in order to drive the shank, neck and head into an anatomical target of a patient; and
the shank including:
a curved lateral surface having at least one helical thread extending from a proximal end of the shank towards the distal end of the shank, the at least one helical thread including at least two purchase zones, the at least two purchase zones comprising a first purchase zone comprising a cancellous pitched zone having a first thread pitch configured for purchase in cancellous bone and a second purchase zone comprising a cortical pitched zone having a second thread pitch configured for purchase in cortical bone, the cancellous pitched zone extending proximally from the distal end of the screw, and the cortical pitched zone extending proximally from an interface with the cancellous pitched zone:
wherein the first thread pitch and the second thread pitch are compression neutral; and
wherein the neck includes micro threads disposed thereon.
17 . A screw for orthopedic surgery at an anatomical target site in a human patient, the screw having a proximal end and a distal end, the screw comprising:
a head having a proximal end comprising the proximal end of the screw, a shank having a distal end comprising the distal end of the screw, and a neck extending between the head and the shank, wherein the head, neck and shank are colinear along a longitudinal axis extending between a proximal end of the head and a distal end of the shank;
the head including:
a proximal base at the proximal end of the head, the proximal base comprising an upper surface of the head that is transverse to the longitudinal axis, a distal base at a distal end of the head, and a curved lateral surface extending between the proximal base and the distal base;
at least one helical thread extending from the proximal base of the head to the distal base of the head and having a diameter that defines a major diameter of the head, the helical thread configured to contact a bone forming part of the anatomical target site when the head is implanted during use to thereby enhance the purchase of the head into the bone, the at least one helical thread having at least one pitch;
a drive feature dimensioned to cooperate with an instrument such that the head, shank, and neck may be rotated about the longitudinal axis in order to drive the shank, neck and head into an anatomical target of a patient; and
the shank including:
a curved lateral surface having at least one helical thread extending from a proximal end of the shank towards the distal end of the shank, the at least one helical thread including at least two purchase zones, the at least two purchase zones comprising a first purchase zone comprising a cancellous pitched zone having a first thread pitch configured for purchase in cancellous bone and a second purchase zone comprising a cortical pitched zone having a second thread pitch configured for purchase in cortical bone, the cancellous pitched zone extending proximally from the distal end of the screw, and the cortical pitched zone extending proximally from an interface with the cancellous pitched zone;
wherein the first thread pitch and the second thread pitch are compression neutral; and
wherein the shank further comprises micro threads at the interface between the first purchase zone and the second purchase zone.
