Abstract

A bariatric clamp may include substrate members overmolded in polymer forming first and second elongated portions, a bight portion having a flexible hinge, one or more inflatable portions disposed at least partially along interior sections of the first and second elongated portions; and a port coupled to at least one of the inflatable portions and configured to adjust inflation of the inflatable portions. The inflatable portions are provided to assist in retaining the clamp in a closed position to partition the stomach and to adjust a pressure of the clamp when partitioning the stomach.

Claims (50)

1 . An inflatable bariatric clamp comprising:

a first substrate member having a first elongated portion, a second elongated portion, and a first bent portion positioned between the first elongated portion and the second elongated portion;

a second substrate member having a third elongated portion, a fourth elongated portion, and a second bent portion positioned between the third elongated portion and the fourth elongated portion;

wherein when the inflatable bariatric clamp is in a closed position, an enclosed area is formed that includes at least an interior surface of the first elongated portion of the first substrate member and an interior surface of the third elongated portion of the second substrate member;

wherein the first bent portion and the second bent portion have bends such that, when the inflatable bariatric clamp is in the closed position, a spacing between the second elongated portion of the first substrate member and the fourth elongated portion of the second substrate member is greater than a spacing between the first elongated portion of the first substrate member and the third elongated portion of the second substrate member;

a bight portion having a flexible hinge formed at least partially from a first polymer portion and joining the second elongated portion of the first substrate member and the fourth elongated portion of the second substrate member;

a first inflatable portion disposed at least partially adjacent the interior surface of the first elongated portion of the first substrate member; and

a port in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion and configured to adjust inflation of the first inflatable portion.

2 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 further comprising:

a second inflatable portion disposed at least partially adjacent the interior surface of the third elongated portion of the second substrate member.

3 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 , wherein the port is disposed adjacent (i) the first inflatable portion or (ii) the first elongated portion.

4 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 2 , further comprising a second port in fluid communication with the second inflatable portion and configured to adjust inflation of the second inflatable portion.

5 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 2 , wherein the port is disposed adjacent the first elongated portion and is in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion.

6 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 2 , wherein the port is disposed adjacent the bight portion and is in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion.

7 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 , wherein the first inflatable portion is at least partially disposed on at least a portion of the second elongated portion.

8 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 , wherein, when the bariatric clamp is in the closed position, the spacing between the first elongated portion and the third elongated portion is adjustable by inflating the first inflatable portion.

9 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 , wherein when the inflatable bariatric clamp is positioned around a stomach, the first elongated portion and the third elongated portion of the inflatable bariatric clamp form a partition-forming section located towards a first end of the inflatable bariatric clamp, and the second elongated portion and the fourth elongated portion of the inflatable bariatric clamp form a passage-forming section located towards a second end of the bariatric clamp.

10 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 , further comprising:

a fastener portion disposed adjacent the third elongated portion; and

an engagement portion disposed adjacent the first elongated portion, the engagement portion operable to engage the fastener portion to retain the bariatric clamp in the closed position.

11 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 2 , wherein the first inflatable portion and the second inflatable portion are provided as one inflatable portion.

12 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 1 , wherein the first elongated portion of the first substrate member defines a first longitudinal axis, and the third elongated portion of the second substrate member defines a second longitudinal axis, and

wherein the inflatable bariatric clamp further comprises:

a first angle-hingeable portion configured to position at least a portion of the bight portion at an angle relative to the first longitudinal axis of the first elongated portion of the first substrate member; and

a second angle-hingeable portion configured to position at least a portion of the bight portion at an angle relative to the second longitudinal axis of the third elongated portion of the second substrate member.

13 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 12 wherein the first angle-hingeable portion is the first bent portion, and the second angle-hingeable portion is the second bent portion.

14 . An inflatable bariatric clamp comprising:

a first elongated portion that includes at least a portion of a first substrate member and a first polymer portion that at least partially surrounds a portion of the first substrate member;

a second elongated portion that includes at least a portion of a second substrate member and a second polymer portion that at least partially surrounds a portion of the second substrate member;

a bight portion having a flexible hinge formed at least partially from a third polymer portion, the bight portion positioned between the first elongated portion and the second elongated portion, wherein;

wherein when the inflatable bariatric clamp is in a closed position, an enclosed area is formed that includes at least an interior surface of the first elongated portion and an interior surface of the second elongated portion,

a first inflatable portion disposed at least partially adjacent the interior surface of the first elongated portion; and

a port in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion and configured to adjust inflation of the first inflatable portion wherein, when the inflatable bariatric clamp is positioned around a stomach, the first elongated portion and second elongated portion of the inflatable bariatric clamp form a partition-forming section located towards a first end of the inflatable bariatric clamp, and the bight portion of the inflatable bariatric clamp forms a passage-forming section located towards a second end of the inflatable bariatric clamp.

15 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 14 , wherein the port is disposed adjacent the first inflatable portion or the first elongated portion.

16 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 15 , wherein the port is in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion and is configured to adjust inflation of the first inflatable portion, and wherein the inflatable bariatric clamp further comprises:

a second inflatable portion disposed at least partially adjacent the interior surface of the second elongated portion.

17 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 14 , wherein the port is a subcutaneous port, and is in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion.

18 . The inflatable bariatric clamp of claim 14 , wherein the port is disposed adjacent the first elongated portion and is in fluid communication with the first inflatable portion.
